Overview
This 6-day solo journey follows Thailand north — from Bangkok's temples and night-train platform to Ayutthaya's 400-year-old ruins, Chiang Mai's ethical elephant sanctuary, and the mountain town of Pai where the only road in has 762 curves. Bangkok (1 night): the Grand Palace at 8:30 AM, Chinatown after dark, the overnight train north. Ayutthaya (1 night): the ancient capital by bicycle at 6 AM, the Buddha head encased in banyan tree roots, the riverside ruins at golden hour. Chiang Mai (2 nights): Elephant Nature Park, Doi Suthep temple above the city, Sunday Walking Street, and a northern Thai cooking class. Pai (1 night): the clay canyon at sunset, hot springs at 40°C, and a walking street that closes at 10 PM. The kind of trip you plan once and remember for years.
Mid-range itinerary
Explore your journey day by day, with every stay, transfer and experience clearly planned.
Land at Suvarnabhumi, drop your bag at the hotel, and head straight to the Grand Palace at 8:30 AM — done before 11 AM. Afternoon: Chao Phraya ferry across to Wat Arun. Evening: Yaowarat Chinatown from 7 PM — braised duck noodles, grilled seafood, the gold shop district lit at night. Then the overnight train to Ayutthaya from Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue Station.
The train to Ayutthaya is only 1.5 hours — take the evening departure around 9 PM. Check into your guesthouse, sleep, and cycle at 6 AM. No full overnight train needed — just a short evening leg north.
Up at 5:30 AM. Take the ferry from Ayutthaya pier to the temple island and rent a bicycle. Cycle the temple circuit from 6 AM in the horizontal morning light — Wat Phra Si Sanphet first (the 3-chedi royal temple), then Wat Mahathat (the Buddha head in banyan tree roots), then Wat Ratchaburana, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram on the riverside (best in afternoon light). Back by noon. Afternoon: Ayutthaya National Museum — the recovered temple sculptures.
Wat Mahathat charges entry but you cannot stand next to the Buddha head — photography from the pathway only. This is how the root system is being protected. The viewing distance is close enough for the photograph.
Morning train back to Bangkok (1.5 hrs). Domestic flight Bangkok → Chiang Mai (1 hr 10 min, included). Arrive Chiang Mai afternoon, check into your old city guesthouse — most are inside or adjacent to the moat. Evening: Chiang Mai old city walk — Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, Wat Inthakin in 90 minutes on foot. End the evening at the Night Bazaar food court.
Book the Bangkok → Chiang Mai flight on AirAsia or Nok Air from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) — not Suvarnabhumi. Don Mueang is 30 min from central Bangkok and fares are consistently lower on this route.
8 AM pickup for Elephant Nature Park (30 km north, 45 min). Full day at the rescue sanctuary — walk with the herd in the river valley, feed the elephants fruit, watch them bathe in the river. Return Chiang Mai 5 PM. If today is Sunday: Sunday Walking Street on Wualai Road opens at 4 PM — local silver, handmade ceramics, northern Thai street food.
Sunday Walking Street (Wualai Road) and the Night Bazaar are completely different. Wualai is local artisans selling their own handmade work. Night Bazaar is mass-produced tourist goods. If it's Sunday, go to Wualai. Any other day — skip the Night Bazaar for shopping.
