Kashmir and Switzerland are the two places on the earth which are called "Paradise on earth" more than anywhere else. One is a short-flight from most Indian cities which does not require a visa. The other is a half-a-world-away, half-a-lifetime bucket-list passport stamp. Both will leave you wondering out a window, "how can this be real?
So what one is the right one to pay with your leave days? We have personally taken tourists to both and the real question is, "Switzerland, or what? Let's play this thing out properly, just like you would have a client sitting across the desk from you that you were talking to.
It's no secret that Switzerland is expensive. It's always one of the most expensive countries to travel in. Hotels, food, trains, even coffee will be costly beyond expectation and a week there can be several times the cost of a week there in Kashmir.
In contrast, Kashmir is one of the best value beautiful destinations that a traveller can reach in India. The amount of rupees you can read a lot on a houseboat and a home cooked wazwan and having a private cab for sightseeing together is a lot less expensive than a couple of restaurant dinners in Zermatt.
If the price tag is a crucial one, then this round takes Kashmir by a mile. The true question is, whether the premium you pay is worth the quality of Kashmir or not: let's find out.
It's here that you can really experience Kashmir's home advantage. Indian travelers don't have visa requirement and do no t need to make arrangements for foreign currency and Srinagar is about 90 minutes flight away from Delhi. One can choose the Friday and by Sunday be floating on Dal Lake.

This is not an issue of any kind because millions of Indians enjoy this practice each year. Yet it's hard work and planning you don't need to be told to do in Kashmir.

Kashmir has a soft, lush and lived-in feel. Snow capped Alps, turquoise lakes, the Matterhorn, picturesque trains such as the Glacier Express running through unbreachable terrain, and towns that are so well put together they appear to be digitally created. It's big, dramatic and always in style!

The magic of Kashmir in summer lies in sleeping on a carved wooden houseboat, enjoying the kahwa with the chilling cold, watching the chinar leaves glow fire red in autumn or skiing fresh powder in Gulmarg during winter. It's an immersive sensory experience.
Switzerland is a country for action and reverence, paragliding over Interlaken, taking cogwheel trains up to Jungfraujoch, cruising around the lakes in Lucerne and truly experiencing the pleasure of good chocolate and cheese, all relatively inexpensive. The infrastructure is perfect: trains run on time, signs are easy to understand and it is just perfect!
When it comes to ease, comfort and easy organisation, Switzerland takes the victory. Kashmir has a natural charm which money cannot create that offers soul, story, and an area that has not been tainted by the assembly line of mass tourism.
For a majority of Indian travellers, this is of more importance than what the brochures state. Kashmir's cuisine is a lavish and fragrant Wazwan, fresh local produce, abundant vegetarian dishes and cozy cuisine that you are already familiar with.
Switzerland's fondue and rösti are a feast, but not so in Indian and vegetarian food, which is available in larger towns, but not so abundant or cheap. Those who don't eat dal-chawal for days can't go without them, which is important to know before travelling.
Both have an advantage for being well-timed. Kashmir is an all year round wonder – tulips and blossoms in spring, cool green summers, golden chinar autumns and snow clad winters for skiing. Switzerland is very verdant, hikeable in the summer and a snowy playground in the winter, and in the spring and autumn, it is fairly quiet but often a better price.
The main difference: Kashmir's seasons are very different and so are the experiences of each. The best time will be based on your preferred type of Kashmir sightseeing.

If it's a once-in-a-lifetime, save-up-for-it bucket list trip you'll do, if infrastructure is a priority and travelling is as easy as a breeze, if you value the grand Alpine spectacle you've had on your wall as a screensaver for years, then choose Switzerland. It's worth the money — if you're going in the right direction.
And honestly? It doesn't need to be a one-or-the-other situation for life. Many of our travellers visit Kashmir first, close and within reach and then wait to visit Switzerland till they reach a milestone. Both would be good options to include on your list, but the only downside is thinking that the more expensive option is superior.
