Black Sea Specific — Sumela Monastery (386 AD): The Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Sumela (Trabzon Province, Black Sea coast) was founded in 386 AD on a sheer cliff face 300 metres above the Altındere Valley. The monastery complex — cells, kitchens, chapels, and a rock-carved church — is built directly into the cliff, accessible only by a mountain path that rises 300 metres from the valley floor (45-minute climb). The frescoes inside the rock-carved church (15th–18th centuries) are partially intact; the exterior of the monastery, clinging to the vertical cliff above the forested valley, is one of the most visually striking architectural photographs in Turkey and consistently the least-visited of Turkey's UNESCO-listed sites.
