Istanbul Classic City Tour Package

Istanbul (Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Edirnekapı, Princes' Islands) — Turkey 4

Overview

The difference between 3-day Istanbul and 5-day Istanbul is not more of the same — it is qualitatively different Istanbul. The Kariye Museum (Chora Church, 14th century, Edirnekapı neighbourhood) contains the finest Late Byzantine mosaics in existence and is visited by fewer than 1% of Istanbul's tourists, because it requires a 35-minute tram journey from Sultanahmet. The Asian side (Üsküdar and Kadıköy, accessed by an 8-minute commuter ferry from Eminönü for USD 1.50) is the Istanbul that Istanbul's own residents inhabit — the neighbourhood restaurants, the local markets, the street-level ordinary daily life of a city of 15 million. The Princes' Islands (Büyükada, 45 minutes by ferry from Kabataş pier) are a car-free Ottoman retreat where horse-drawn carriages are the only vehicle and the sea surrounds the entire island.

Five days gives Istanbul the space to be the city it actually is. The Anastasis fresco (Christ pulling Adam and Eve from their tombs, Satan bound at His feet) in the Kariye Parecclesion is by wide consensus the finest Byzantine fresco in existence — and the visit takes a single afternoon. The Kadıköy fish market at 9 AM is where Istanbul's chefs do their morning purchasing — zero tourist presence, the finest food market in the city. Büyükada (the largest of the Princes' Islands) is car-free; horse-drawn carriage (phaeton) is the only transport, and the island silence is audible from the ferry approach.

Frequently asked questions

Completely — Üsküdar and Kadıköy are mainstream residential Istanbul neighbourhoods, well-policed, well-lit, and easily accessible by the Eminönü commuter ferry (USD 1.50, running every 15 minutes). Kadıköy in particular is known for being Istanbul's most progressive, restaurant-dense neighbourhood — its Moda neighbourhood (10 minutes on foot from the ferry pier) has the highest density of quality restaurants, wine bars, and coffee shops in the city. The Asian side is where Istanbul's educated middle class lives and eats — it is the version of Istanbul that Turkish urbanists describe as the city's genuine contemporary cultural centre.
