Gulmarg ski resort (J&K Government run, ABVIMAS ski school, Gondola Phase 2 to three thousand nine hundred eighty metres Apharwat) is one of Asia's highest and most uncrowded natural ski destinations. The annual snowfall (five hundred to six hundred centimetres) produces natural powder, not machine-made snow. The terrain is ungroomed — natural alpine skiing without the manicured piste culture of European resorts. The Phase 2 gondola (one thousand three hundred rupees per ride, open December-March typically) reaches Apharwat's upper bowls where fifteen to thirty centimetres fresh powder days are common in January.
Ski school (ABVIMAS Gulmarg, government institute, certified instructors): beginner to advanced lessons from five hundred rupees per hour. Rental complete set: five hundred to eight hundred rupees per day. Snowboarding also available. Three consecutive ski days gives progression for beginners or meaningful volume for experienced skiers. Houseboat nights in Srinagar (two nights before + one night after Gulmarg) provide civilised recovery and the two-night Srinagar intro at 1,585m is altitude management — going directly to Gulmarg from sea-level Delhi skips the three-day acclimatisation that makes skiing at 3,980m comfortable.
