A 10-day luxury Switzerland honeymoon package from India - one night in Zurich on arrival, three in Grindelwald under the Eiger, three in car-free Zermatt and two in St. Moritz, reached by the Glacier Express in Excellence Class. Best from late June to mid-September, when every summit lift runs its full schedule, and the Glacier Express is on its summer timetable.

This is the longest and highest-specified route we build. Two of the four bases are car-free mountain villages reached only by rail, and three of them get three or more nights, so the week is spent in places rather than between them. First class on every train, private transfers at both ends, and luggage moved between the car-free villages so you travel with a day bag.

Arrival: Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board. Luggage goes straight into the car.

Check-in: One night at a landmark Zurich hotel. Starting here means you sleep off the flight rather than spending it on a mountain train.

Evening: The lake promenade. In summer the light holds until nearly ten. Your concierge will book dinner wherever you like.

Afternoon: The Niederdorf lanes, the Lindenhof terrace and the Limmat quays - all within walking distance and none of it ticketed.

Check-in: Three nights in Grindelwald at 1,034m, with the Eiger north face rising directly above the village.

Evening: The Eiger holds the last light long after the valley is in shadow. Worth timing a walk for.

Rail: Zurich to Bern to Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, about three hours in first class with two cross-platform changes.

Afternoon: The Terrassenweg above the village is flat, free and gives the classic Eiger view without a lift ticket.

The climb: The Eiger Express gondola from Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher, then the Jungfrau Railway through the Eiger and Monch to Europe's highest railway station.

At the top: The Sphinx observation terrace at 3,571m, the Ice Palace carved into the glacier, and the Aletsch - the longest glacier in the Alps - running away below.

Why the village base helps: Starting from Grindelwald rather than Interlaken cuts roughly an hour off each leg, which on a summit day is worth more than it sounds.

Altitude: 3,454m is high enough that many people feel it briefly. Move slowly up there and keep the visit to two or three hours.

First Cliff Walk in Grindelwald

Morning: Gondola from the village to First at 2,168m, then the First Cliff Walk - a steel gallery bolted to the rock with the Eiger straight ahead.

The walk: The path to Bachalpsee is about an hour each way on an easy track, with the Schreckhorn reflected in the lake on a still morning.

Afternoon: Deliberately free. After a 3,454m day, most couples want it - and it doubles as the buffer if weather moved anything.

Optional: The Glacier Canyon walkways, or the First Glider and Mountain Cart if you want something less serene. Bookable on the day.

Why this route works

Grindelwald, not Interlaken

Jungfraujoch is usually sold from an Interlaken hotel an hour below the mountain. Three nights in Grindelwald puts you at the foot of the Eiger instead, with the Eiger Express gondola from the village itself.

The train is a day, not a transfer

Excellence Class is adults-only with its own concierge and a multi-course meal served at your table. It turns the eight-hour Zermatt to St. Moritz leg into one of the days you remember rather than one you endure.

The Engadin at the end

Finishing in St. Moritz rather than starting there means the trip winds down in the quietest valley on the route, with a lake, a glacier terrace and two nights that ask nothing of you.

It is the second-largest single cost in this package after hotels. Whether it is worth it depends on how you see the day: in standard class, the eight hours are a beautiful transfer; in Excellence Class, they are one of the days of the trip.
