About Australia

Australia is a continent-sized country where the distance between cities is measured in flight hours, the wildlife exists nowhere else on Earth, and the coffee is, against all expectations, genuinely world-class.

In 2023, I spent three weeks travelling from the harbour of Sydney to the reef water of Cairns to the Indian Ocean coast of Perth — five cities across 4,000 kilometres — and came back with a list of things I got wrong on the first trip that this guide is built to correct.

At a glance

Key Features of Australia

  • Sydney Opera House & Harbour BridgeThe Iconic CombinationThe two most photographed structures in the southern hemisphere. Opera House exterior free.
  • Great Barrier ReefThe World's Largest Living Structure2,300km of coral reef off Queensland's coast — the only living thing visible from space.
  • WildlifeKangaroos, Koalas, Platypus, WombatsAustralia has 80% of its mammal species found nowhere else on Earth. Kangaroos visible wild in many national parks at dawn and dusk. Koalas: wildlife sanctuaries in every major city. I saw my first wild kangaroo 20 minutes outside Melbourne.
  • Bondi BeachMore Than a PostcardBondi is one of the world's most famous beaches — and also a genuinely lived-in, working-class Sydney suburb. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk (6km, free) is the finest urban coastal walk in Australia.
Why visit

Why Visit Australia

No other country gives you a functioning democracy, world-class food culture, ancient indigenous civilisation, the world's most unique wildlife, beaches that are genuinely used by locals rather than being tourist exhibits, and a standard of hospitality infrastructure that makes travel feel effortless — all on one landmass. And because the Indian rupee, despite Australia's expense, goes meaningfully further here than it did three years ago. When I visited, the exchange had shifted. This matters.

There is a specific moment I remember from Sydney Harbour in 2023 — sitting on the steps of the Opera House at 7 am before the tourists arrived, the Harbour Bridge turning amber in the morning light, a ferry crossing from the Manly side, and the entire city reflected in the water below. I had been planning Australian itineraries for Indian clients for over two years at that point. I had described that exact view to clients hundreds of times. I was not prepared for the actual thing. That is Australia's consistent quality: it exceeds its own reputation.

The Great Barrier Reef is more extraordinary than any photograph. Melbourne's café laneways are more genuinely atmospheric than any travel blog suggests. The kangaroo I saw at dusk outside Melbourne — 15 minutes from the city centre, grazing in a field behind a cricket ground — made me laugh out loud because nothing in my planning had prepared me for how easy it was to find one.

The City That Earns Its Reputation

CentralMid-range stays

The Sydney Harbour Bridge climb at sunset is the single most expensive individual activity I did on my entire trip to Australia. It is also the one I recommend without reservation to every client, regardless of budget. The four-hour guided climb takes you to the summit of the Harbour Bridge — 134 metres above sea level, with the Opera House, the harbour, the city skyline, and the ocean beyond all in one frame. At sunset. That view does not have a rupee equivalent. But if the cost is a constraint, Mrs Macquarie's Chair viewpoint (free) gives you 80% of the view for 0% of the cost. Sydney is the gateway city for most Indian Australian travellers — the largest city, the most photogenic harbour, and the most developed tourist infrastructure. Circular Quay (the ferry hub at the base of the Opera House), The Rocks (Australia's oldest European settlement), Bondi Beach (a 20-minute bus from the city on the 380 route), and the Blue Mountains (1 hour west by train) are the four essential Sydney circuits.

Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef

Now, Before It Changes More

The Great Barrier Reef from a day-trip pontoon is the experience. But let me be honest about it: what you see from a snorkel on a day trip from Cairns is a section of the reef, not the whole reef — the reef is 2,300km long, and you access perhaps 2km of it. That section is extraordinary. The coral density, the fish diversity, the water clarity at the outer reef — I was in the water for 3.5 hours and came out only because the boat was leaving. I am not a trained diver. The introductory dive (no certification required; an instructor accompanies you at depth) added AUD 150 to my day trip cost and gave me 30 minutes at a depth of 6–8 metres, during which I saw the reef from inside rather than above it. Those 30 minutes were the best AUD 150 I spent in Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is accessed from Cairns (Queensland). Day trips depart from Cairns Marina at 8 am and return by 5:30 pm. Major operators: Quicksilver Connections, Great Adventures, Sunlover Reef Cruises, Reef Magic.

Melbourne

Melbourne

Australia's Most Liveable City

CulturalMid-range stays

Melbourne is the city where I came to understand that 'Australian culture' is not monolithic. In Sydney, the culture is the harbour — it organises everything else. In Melbourne, the culture is the laneway. The city's hidden lanes — Hosier Lane (street art), Degraves Street (café strip), Centre Place — are a genuinely non-commercialised creative environment. Nobody is performing for tourists. The street art gets painted over and repainted by artists who have been working the same walls for 20 years. The coffee shop on Degraves Street that had a 45-minute queue at 8 am on a Tuesday was queued by office workers, not tourists. That is the difference. Melbourne is the cultural capital of Australia — consistently ranked the world's most liveable city for much of the past decade. Federation Square (free), Royal Botanic Gardens (free), the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Immigration Museum, the Melbourne Museum, and the famous café laneway culture make the city a minimum 3-day destination.

Gold Coast

Theme Parks, Beaches, and Rainforest

Beach-adjacentMid-range stays

The Gold Coast split opinion among every Indian travelling companion I discussed it with — some found it exactly what they came for (theme parks, beach walks, Surfers Paradise nightlife), others found it overstimulating compared to the quieter coastal beauty of, say, Byron Bay (1 hour north). I am in the former camp. Movie World — specifically the DC Rivals HyperCoaster (ranked in Australia's top roller coasters) — was the loudest I have laughed in a decade of travel. The 96m drop at 115km/h is not something that happens at an Indian theme park. The Gold Coast (1 hour south of Brisbane) is Australia's theme park capital — Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld, and Wet'n'Wild all within 20 minutes of each other. Surfers Paradise Beach is a proper ocean surf beach with lifeguards, consistent waves, and a beach culture that is genuinely Australian. The Hinterland (45 minutes inland) — Lamington National Park, Springbrook National Park — gives rainforest gorges and waterfalls as contrast to the coastal strip.

Cairns

Cairns

Gateway to Everything North Queensland

Reef baseBudget stays

Cairns in 2023 was the trip's wildlife highlight — and I mean that literally. On the drive to Daintree Rainforest (the world's oldest tropical rainforest, predating the Amazon by 50 million years), we stopped at a roadside pull-off to look at a crocodile-warning sign. The guide pointed to the water 10 metres from the sign. There was a saltwater crocodile approximately 3 metres long, partially submerged, watching us with the specific patience of an apex predator. This is the thing about Cairns and North Queensland: the wildlife is not in a zoo. It is in the landscape you are driving through. Cairns is the jumping-off point for: the Great Barrier Reef (60–90 minutes by boat), the Daintree Rainforest (110km north), the Atherton Tablelands (inland volcanic plateau with waterfalls, crater lakes, and platypus habitats), and the Whitsunday Islands (1 hour by plane — Whitehaven Beach is consistently ranked one of the world's finest beaches).

Perth & Rottnest Island

Perth & Rottnest Island

The Indian Ocean Surprise

Indian Ocean cityMid-range stays

Rottnest Island was the moment that separated Perth from every other city in my 2023 trip. Rottnest (25km offshore from Fremantle, 30-minute ferry) is the only place in the world where quokkas live in the wild. Quokkas are small marsupials — approximately cat-sized, perpetually appearing to smile, apparently completely without fear of humans. Within 45 minutes of landing on the island, I was sitting on a rock with a quokka 60 centimetres from me, eating grass, paying no attention to the camera I was pointing at it. This is not a managed animal encounter. These are wild animals that happen to live on an island with no land predators. It is the most charming wildlife encounter I have had in any country I have visited. Perth is the world's most isolated major city — 4,000km from Sydney —, but it is only 5–6 hours from most Indian cities (via Singapore or Southeast Asia), making it arguably the most accessible Australian city for Indian travellers. Key Perth experiences: Rottnest Island (quokkas), Fremantle (historic port city), Cottesloe Beach, and the Margaret River wine region (90 minutes south).

Blue Mountains

Blue Mountains

Sydney's Natural Wonder

The Blue Mountains from Echo Point in the early morning (I arrived at 7:30am on a weekday) had the valleys filled with mist, making the Three Sisters look like they were floating. The eucalyptus oil that gives the mountains their blue haze in midday light creates a landscape that seems digitally filtered. It is not. The Scenic Railway — a historic cliff-face railway that descends into the valley on a 52-degree gradient — is marketed as 'the world's steepest passenger railway' and I have no reason to doubt it. The Katoomba Cascades, the Jamison Valley walks, and the village of Leura (with boutique shops, an excellent café, and 10 minutes from Katoomba) make for a full day. The Blue Mountains (100km west of Sydney, 1 hour by Blue Mountains Line train) is a UNESCO World Heritage Area — sandstone escarpments covered in eucalyptus forest. The Three Sisters (three sandstone formations at Echo Point) are the defining image. Scenic World at Katoomba has four linked attractions — the Skyway, the Scenic Railway, the Sceniscender, and the Boardwalk.

Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road

Australia's Most Scenic Drive

The Great Ocean Road is a 243-kilometre coastal highway between Torquay and Allansford — built by returned WWI soldiers between 1919 and 1932 and dedicated as a war memorial. The Twelve Apostles (limestone sea stacks standing in the Southern Ocean, eroding in real time — there are actually 8 remaining, not 12) are the destination image. But the drive itself is the experience — particularly the section through the Otway Ranges, where the road descends through temperate rainforest and emerges at surf beaches where the Southern Ocean is uninterrupted from the coast of Antarctica. I drove it in 2023 in a 2-day loop from Melbourne and came back with photographs I still use for Australian content. The Great Ocean Road is the southern hemisphere's most famous coastal drive — passing through Torquay (Australia's surf capital), Lorne, Apollo Bay, Cape Otway Lighthouse, and culminating at the Twelve Apostles limestone stacks. The road was built in memory of Australian WWI soldiers — it is the world's largest war memorial.

Sydney Harbour Ferry to Manly — Priceless View

The Manly Ferry from Circular Quay crosses Sydney Harbour from the city to the northern beaches suburb of Manly. The route passes under the Harbour Bridge shadow, alongside the Opera House, through the harbour entrance, and opens onto the Pacific Ocean. This is the same route that paid tourist harbour cruises follow at 10x the price. I took this ferry every morning of my Sydney stay in 2023 — once toward Manly, once back — using the return trip as a free harbour cruise. Nobody on the boat was doing this except every Manly resident commuting to work and me. Duration: 30 minutes each way.

Great Barrier Reef Snorkel — Outer Reef Pontoon

The outer reef — accessed by high-speed catamaran from Cairns, approximately 60–90km offshore — is where the coral density and water clarity are genuinely extraordinary. The inner reef (accessible by cheaper day trips) is comparatively affected by sediment and bleaching events. The outer reef at Moore Reef, Flynn Reef, or Norman Reef shows you the Great Barrier Reef as it is in the natural history documentaries. I was in the water at Moore Reef in 2023 for 3.5 hours, saw parrot fish, sea turtles, Maori wrasse (large), and more species of coral than I could identify. The reef talks to itself underwater — there is a specific crackling, clicking, biological sound that you can hear when you put your head under. Duration: Full day (depart 8 am, return 5:30 pm).

Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb — Sunset Premium

The BridgeClimb Sydney is a 4-hour guided climb to the summit of the Harbour Bridge — 134 metres above the harbour, with the Opera House, the city skyline, the ocean, and the Blue Mountains on the horizon all in one frame. At sunset, the experience has a specific quality: the city lights begin to appear, the water changes colour, and the bridge itself warms in the last light. AUD 388 (₹26,545) for the summit sunset climb is the most expensive single activity in this guide. It is also the one I am most likely to recommend without qualification — because there is no other way to stand above Sydney Harbour with that view. Duration: 4 hours total (from check-in to descent).

    Melbourne Coffee Laneway Trail

Melbourne's coffee culture is one of the genuinely world-class things in the country — the city developed a flat white and café culture independent of European or American templates, and the result is a standard of espresso preparation that is difficult to match in most of the world. Degraves Street, Centre Place, Hardware Lane, and Hosier Lane form a café-and-street-art circuit that takes 90 minutes at a slow walk and involves 3–4 coffee stops if you are being thorough. At AUD 5–6 (₹342–₹411) per flat white, this is also one of the most affordable significant experiences in the city. Duration: 90 minutes to half - day.

Wildlife Sanctuary Visit — Koalas, Kangaroos, Wombats

Wild kangaroos are visible in many Australian national parks and suburban fringes at dawn and dusk. But for koalas (who sleep 22 hours a day and are genuinely difficult to spot in the wild among eucalyptus trees), a wildlife sanctuary offers a reliable opportunity to see them. I held a koala at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (Brisbane, AUD 21 ≈ ₹1,437 for the holding experience) in 2023 — a specific kind of weight, warmth, and fur texture that I did not anticipate would affect me as much as it did. Feeding a kangaroo (using the sanctuary-provided food pellets) in a free-roam enclosure is equally affecting — they approach you without hesitation.

Margaret River Wine Region — Perth Day Trip

The Margaret River wine region (90 minutes south of Perth, 300km of Indian Ocean coastline) produces some of Australia's finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay — at cellar door prices (AUD 10–20 -₹685–₹1,369 for a tasting flight of 5 wines) that are roughly 40% of what the same wines cost at retail in Perth. In 2023, I spent an afternoon at Cape Mentelle (one of the founding wineries of the region, now Moët Hennessy-owned) and Voyager Estate. The cellar door at Voyager — a Cape Dutch homestead surrounded by rose gardens, with the vineyard behind and the sea breeze off the Southern Ocean carrying sage and eucalyptus — was the most atmospheric single setting I encountered in Australia. Gold Coast Theme Parks — Full Day at Movie World

Warner Bros. Movie World on the Gold Coast has a quality that exceeds my expectations: the rides are genuinely thrilling to an international standard. The DC Rivals HyperCoaster (96m drop, 115km/h, 1.4km track) is a legitimate world-class roller coaster. The Justice League 3D ride, the Green Lantern launch coaster, and the Wild West Falls are the supporting acts. An adult day at Movie World in 2023 cost me AUD 99 — I was on 12 different attractions over 8 hours and came out with a specific jaw-muscle soreness from 8 hours of involuntary laughing and screaming that I had not experienced since childhood.

Great Ocean Road Self-Drive — Twelve Apostles at Sunrise

The Great Ocean Road at the Twelve Apostles viewpoint at sunrise (arriving before 7 am) gives you the limestone sea stacks in morning light, without the coach tour groups (which typically arrive from 9 am onward), and with the chance of the specific mist-on-Southern-Ocean atmospheric light that the landscape occasionally produces on calm mornings. I drove through rain all day to reach the Twelve Apostles area for a 6am start — it cleared 20 minutes before sunrise. The limestone stacks emerged from the mist as the light grew. This was not a planned photographic moment. It was just what happened because I arrived early.

Phillip Island Penguin Parade — Melbourne Evening

Every evening at sunset, Little Penguins (the world's smallest penguin species, 33cm tall) return from the sea to their burrows on Phillip Island's Summerland Beach — a predictable daily event that has been occurring for thousands of years and has been observable since 1929. The parade is managed by Phillip Island Nature Parks — you sit in tiered grandstands on the beach (no flash photography) as the penguins emerge from the surf in groups of 10–50 and waddle up the beach past you at approximately 50cm distance. I went expecting to find it charming. I found it genuinely moving — something about the scale of these birds against the open Southern Ocean, coming home from a day of fishing in the open sea, that has no logical explanation for the emotional response it produces. Duration: Evening departure from Melbourne (90 min drive) · 1 hour at penguin parade · Return late evening.

    Rottnest Island Quokka Encounter

Rottnest Island (30-minute ferry from Fremantle, Perth) is a car-free island where bicycles are the primary transport and quokkas — small marsupials that appear permanently to be smiling — are the dominant wildlife. The quokkas at Rottnest have no natural predators on the island, have never been hunted, and have consequently never developed a fear of humans. They approach to within 30–60cm without any encouragement. The quokka selfie (a specific genre of wildlife photography that Rottnest effectively invented) is the obvious Instagram moment — but the actual encounter, close enough to hear the animal breathing and watch it eat with precise little hands, is the memorable one. Duration: Full day from Perth (8am ferry, return 5pm).

Getting around Australia

  • Smartcard

    Opal Card (Sydney)

    AUD 2–6 per trip (≈ ₹137–₹411)

All Sydney public transport — metro, trains, buses, ferries. The Sydney Opal Card ferry from Circular Quay to Manly (30 minutes each way, AUD 6 ≈ ₹411) is the finest harbour experience in Sydney at public transport prices — the identical view that a tourist 'harbour cruise' sells for AUD 40–80

  • Smartcard

    Myki Card (Melbourne)

    AUD 2–5 per trip (≈ ₹137–₹342)

    All Melbourne trams, trains, buses

  • Domestic air

    Domestic Flight

    AUD 80–250 one way (≈ ₹5,476–₹17,113)

Sydney–Cairns, Melbourne–Perth, Sydney–Gold Coast. Book 6–8 weeks ahead via Jetstar

  • Car hire

    Rental Car

    AUD 50–80/day (≈ ₹3,423–₹5,476)

Great Ocean Road, Blue Mountains, Margaret River, Tasmania. Comprehensive Insurance: AUD 30–40/day extra (≈ ₹2,054–₹2,738). Do NOT skip this — kangaroo collision costs are significant

  • By water

    Ferry (Sydney Harbour)

    AUD 3–6 (≈ ₹205–₹411)

Manly Ferry, Circular Quay — public transport with harbour views

  • Taxi & rideshare

    Uber / Taxi

    AUD 15–40/trip (≈ ₹1,027–₹2,738)

City movement where public transport is slower

  • Airport transfer

    Airport Transfer

    AUD 20–60 (≈ ₹1,369–₹4,107)

Pre-book from airport to hotel — Uber is usually cheaper than taxis

Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    2 tips
    • Tipping is not customary in Australia — service staff are paid a living wage and tipping in restaurants or taxis is genuinely optional, not expected. Rounding up at cafes is appreciated but never obligatory.

    • Australia's tourist tax refund scheme (TRS) allows you to claim back 10% GST on purchases over AUD 300 at the same retailer — claim at the airport before departure. Worth doing for electronics and luxury goods.

  • Safety

    2 tips
    • Sun protection is non-negotiable — Australia has the highest UV index in the world; SPF 50+ sunscreen, hat, and rashguard are essential even on overcast days, especially October–March.

    • Swim between the red and yellow flags at all Australian beaches — these mark patrolled areas; outside the flags, rip currents are common, and lifeguard rescue response is limited.

  • Etiquette

    2 tips
    • Do not refer to New Zealanders as Australians, or vice versa — it is a source of genuine irritation; the distinction matters significantly to both nationalities.

    • Acknowledge Country when visiting Aboriginal sacred sites or National Parks — a brief respectful acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians is increasingly expected and appreciated at heritage sites.

  • Scams & Pitfalls

    3 tips
    • Online accommodation scams targeting visitors to popular areas (Airlie Beach, Cairns) — verify all rental listings via official platforms and avoid direct bank transfers to "owners" before arrival.

    • Wildlife encounter operators near Cairns or Byron Bay sometimes offer illegal animal handling experiences (koala selfies where prohibited, unregulated crocodile encounters) — check operator licensing before booking.

    • Kangaroo meat sold at airports and tourist shops as an "authentic Australian souvenir" is legal and genuine, but prices at tourist shops are 3–4× supermarket prices — buy from Woolworths or Coles for the same product.

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Australia — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Sydney Harbour Bridge Sunset Climb

The most expensive activity in this guide. The only way to stand above Sydney Harbour at 134m with the Opera House, city, and ocean in one frame at sunset. No photograph matches it.

  • Great Barrier Reef Outer Reef + Introductory Dive (AUD 300

450 total ≈ ₹20,535–₹30,803) — Outer reef over inner reef (better coral, clearer water). Adding the introductory dive to a snorkel day trip gives you 30 minutes inside the reef at 6–8m depth.

  • Manly Ferry Sydney

Public transport ferry across Sydney Harbour — the same route as tourist harbour cruises at 1/10th the price. Take it every morning of your Sydney stay.

  • Great Ocean Road Self-Drive

Australia's most scenic coastal drive, the Twelve Apostles at sunrise, the Otways rainforest, the Southern Ocean. 2-day self-drive from Melbourne with one night in Apollo Bay.

  • Rottnest Island Quokka + Bike Day

The only place in the world where wild quokkas approach to 60cm. Ferry + bike + entry. The most charming wildlife encounter in any country I have visited.

  • Melbourne Coffee Laneway Trail

World-class coffee culture at public café prices. Degraves Street, Centre Place, Hardware Lane. The flat white in Melbourne is a benchmark.

  • Phillip Island Penguin Parade

Wild Little Penguins returning from sea at sunset, 50cm from your viewing position. One of Australia's most genuinely moving wildlife moments.

  • Supermarket + Self-Catering Breakfast

Australian supermarkets (Woolworths, Coles) have excellent prepared food sections, fresh bread, quality cheeses, and pre-packaged healthy options. Hotel breakfast at AUD 25–40 is the least efficient meal cost in Australia. Buy from Woolworths instead.

  • Eating near the Opera House and Circular Quay

AUD 35–60 per main dish at tourist-area restaurants vs. AUD 15–25 in Newtown, Surry Hills, or Glebe for equivalent or better food.

Better moveTake a 20-minute Uber or the 20-minute bus. The neighbourhood restaurants are where Sydney actually eats.

  • Skipping Perth because 'it's too far from the East Coast'

Perth is 4,000km from Sydney but 5–6 hours from major Indian cities via Singapore. It is arguably the most accessible Australian city for Indian travellers and gets far fewer Indian tourists — meaning better value and less crowded attractions.

Better moveRoute the trip Perth → East Coast or East Coast → Perth.

  • Blue Mountains on a weekend

Echo Point is genuinely crowded by 10am on weekends.

Better moveGo on a weekday. Leave Sydney by 7am. Have the Three Sisters to yourself for 90 minutes before the coach tours arrive. The Blue Mountains on a weekday morning is a different place from the Blue Mountains on a Saturday afternoon.

  • Great Ocean Road as a single-day trip from Melbourne

4 hours driving each way to the Twelve Apostles leaves approximately 3 hours for everything else along the 243km road. This is not a road trip — it is a highway transit.

Better moveStay one night in Apollo Bay. Do the drive properly.

  • Booking the cheapest Cairns reef day trip

The inner reef (used by budget operators) vs. outer reef (used by mid-range operators) is not a marginal difference — it is the difference between bleached, sediment-affected coral and the Great Barrier Reef as it appears in nature documentaries.

Better moveSpend AUD 200–250 for an outer reef operator.

  • Buying individual theme park tickets at the Gold Coast gate

Gate prices are 30–40% higher than advance multi-park combo passes. A 3-park combo (AUD 160–200) vs. three individual daily tickets (AUD 297) is a saving of AUD 97–137 per person.

Better moveBuy in advance from operators' websites.

  • Paying for Sydney tourist harbour cruises

AUD 40–80 for tourist cruises that follow the same route as the AUD 6 Manly public ferry. The ferry is not a compromise — it has the same views, is faster to board, and goes more frequently.

  • 10-day trip trying to cover 6+ cities

Australia's cities are 1.5–4 hours apart by domestic flight. Adding Perth, Adelaide, and Hobart to Sydney-Melbourne-Cairns in 10 days turns the trip into transit management rather than travel. Three or four cities at depth is significantly better than six cities at speed.

March–May (Australian autumn) is the top recommendation — pleasant weather across all major cities, post-summer crowds, stable prices, reef diveable. September–November (spring) is equally good for most regions. Avoid December–February (Australian summer): maximum crowds, maximum prices, extreme heat (35–45°C in many areas). I visited in 2023 during autumn and the timing was very close to perfect.
No. Indians are NOT eligible for the Australian ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651). These are available only to passport holders of specific countries (mainly EU nations and close partner countries). Indian passport holders must apply for the Subclass 600 Visitor Visa — a full application via ImmiAccount at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au, with supporting documents and AUD 190 fee.
Return economy airfare: ₹42,000–₹80,000 (advance booking 8–12 weeks ahead). Air India operates Delhi–Sydney and Delhi–Melbourne direct (13.5 hours). One-stop options via Singapore (Singapore Airlines, Qantas): 15–18 hours. Booking 10–12 weeks ahead gives the best fares. Flying into Perth from Indian cities via Singapore or Southeast Asia: ₹35,000–₹65,000 return — often cheaper than Sydney.
AUD 200–300 per person (≈ ₹13,690–₹20,535) for an outer reef day trip from Cairns including snorkel gear and lunch. Introductory scuba dive (no certification, instructor-accompanied): additional AUD 100–150 (≈ ₹6,845–₹10,268). Liveaboard 2-night dive trip: AUD 500–900 (≈ ₹34,225–₹61,605). Book outer reef operators (Reef Magic, Great Adventures) — not budget inner reef operators.
Yes. Australia has very low violent crime rates in all major tourist areas. Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Cairns, and Perth are all safe cities. Standard travel precautions apply — use Uber/metered taxis, swim between flags at surf beaches, apply SPF 50+ sunscreen (Australian UV is extremely high), and be aware of wildlife safety rules (no touching wild animals, rip current awareness at beaches). Emergency: 000.
10 days: East Coast highlight reel — Sydney + Blue Mountains + Gold Coast + Cairns + Melbourne (tight but possible). 14 days: Adds Great Ocean Road, Daintree Rainforest, and Whitsundays. 21 days: Adds Perth + Margaret River for a genuinely comprehensive Australia experience. My recommendation: 14 days minimum for first-time visitors who want more than a city surface-pass.
