About Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand (53,483 sq km, 27th state of India, formed from Uttar Pradesh in 2000) is the northernmost Himalayan state bordering Nepal to the east, Tibet to the north, Himachal Pradesh to the northwest, and the Gangetic plain to the south. The state divides into two distinct regions: Garhwal (western Himalayan zone — Char Dham temples, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Auli, Chopta, Valley of Flowers, Kedarnath) and Kumaon (eastern zone — Nainital, Mukteshwar, Ranikhet, Bhimtal, Jageshwar, Jim Corbett National Park).

Why visit

Why Visit Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is India's Himalayan heartland — home to the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath), the source of the Ganga, and some of the most accessible high-altitude trekking in the country. Valley of Flowers National Park, accessible only on foot from Govindghat, blooms with 600+ species of alpine flowers in July–August, including the rare Brahmakamal. Jim Corbett National Park (established 1936, India's first national park) has the highest tiger density in any Indian reserve and a resident population of 250+ Asian elephants. Tungnath at 3,680m is the world's highest Shiva temple, reachable as a 4km day trek from Chopta. Rishikesh is the Ganga's most celebrated yoga and adventure rafting destination. Auli's gondola reaches 2,519m with a complete Nanda Devi panorama. No passport needed. Fly to Dehradun or Pantnagar, or train from Delhi. Best time: May–June and September–November.

Kedarnath

The Temple at the Glacier's Edge

PilgrimsBudget stays
The Kedarnath Jyotirlinga sits at 3,583m in the Mandakini River valley — the temple facing south, the Kedarnath glacier visible 300m above the northern boundary of the temple complex, the river beginning its descent at the temple's feet. The 16km trek from Gaurikund (1,982m, the last motorable point) climbs 1,600m through successive altitude zones: the subtropical forest below Jungle Chatti, the mixed oak and rhododendron forest at Bheembali, the Alpine scrub above Lincholi, and the final exposed ridge walk above the treeline before the Kedarnath valley opens. June: the valley still partially snow-covered at the higher sections, the rhododendrons in the 2,000-3,000m zone in their final bloom, and the specific June pilgrimage energy — the sound of hundreds of thousands of people on the same path, the dhol and nagara drums of the accompanying priests, and the chanting of 'Jai Bholenath' audible from every direction simultaneously. The temple itself: the 8th-century stone construction (attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, though the site is much older), rebuilt and reinforced after the 2013 floods destroyed everything around it while the temple structure — protected by the specific boulder placement visible in post-flood photographs — survived intact.

Auli

India's Ski Slope with a Himalayan Panorama

SkiersMid-range stays
Auli (2,519m, 14km from Joshimath by cable car or 12km by road) is a high-altitude meadow in the Chamoli district that the GMVN converted into a ski resort in the 1980s. The 500m main ski run (north-facing, consistent gradient, the snow reliable January-March) has the Nanda Devi massif (7,816m — the highest peak entirely within India, visible from no other ski slope in the country) directly ahead. The cable car from Joshimath (the 4km gondola, 25 minutes, ₹1,000 return — the longest ropeway in Asia when built, now surpassed but still significant) ascends over the Garhwal valley forest with the Nanda Devi group visible at the top. The March 2023 Auli: the snow surface at 9am (the previous night's freeze still holding, the surface fast and firm), the mountain in the full morning sun, the ski run visible from top to bottom with the village of Auli at the bottom and the Joshimath valley 500m below that. Non-skiers: the Auli meadow in any season (February: deep snow; May: alpine flowers; October: finest mountain clarity) gives the Nanda Devi view from a 15-minute cable car ride from Joshimath, which is 6 hours from Rishikesh by road.

Haridwar Har Ki Pauri

The Ganga at the Mountain's Foot

PilgrimsBudget stays
Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the Himalayan foothills for the Gangetic plain — the river at this point is cold (the glacier system still dominant in the water), fast, and green-grey with the specific colour of high-altitude river water. The Har ki Pauri ghat (the 'footsteps of Vishnu' — the specific sacred steps where the Ganga is believed to touch the earth with particular divine presence) is the centre of the most attended Ganga Aarti in India. The Haridwar Ganga Aarti at 6:30pm (exact time moves with sunset calendar and shifts monthly): the priests at the ghat-side altars, the brass lamps, the incense, the 50,000 pilgrims on the ghat steps simultaneously — the specific scale of the Haridwar aarti (compared to Varanasi's 7-priest ceremony visible to hundreds) is the full riverbank theatrical production visible to tens of thousands. The floating flower diyas on the Ganga at the end of the aarti: in June the river is high (the snowmelt), the current fast, and the diyas travel 200m downstream in 30 seconds.

Rishikesh

Where the Mountains Meet the Market

BackpackersMid-range stays
Rishikesh at 290m altitude (the lowest point at which the Ganga is still the mountain-cold glacial river before the Haridwar floodplain changes its character) is simultaneously the yoga capital of the world (the Sivananda Ashram, Parmarth Niketan, the International Yoga Festival every March — 20,000 participants from 100 countries), the adventure sports capital of India (the 35km Marine Drive rafting stretch, the 83m bungee at Jumpin Heights, cliff jumping at Shivpuri, the Flying Fox), and the specific culinary culture of an Indian town that has been international since the 1960s (the rooftop cafes on the Ganga bank, the chai shops at every corner, and the Beatles Ashram — the abandoned Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram where John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr stayed in 1968, now accessible as a heritage site with the original meditation chambers and the murals painted by subsequent visitors). The Rishikesh rafting in March 2023: the Marine Drive stretch (35km from Shivpuri to Rishikesh, 4 hours including lunch beach stop) at pre-monsoon flow — the river cold (12°C), clear, and at consistent Grade III-IV flow.

Chopta + Tungnath

The Highest Shiva Temple in the World

TrekkersBudget stays
Chopta (2,680m, a small meadow on the Ukhimath-Gopeshwar road, 150km from Rishikesh) is the most specifically undervisited major Uttarakhand viewpoint — the meadow at the forest edge, the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary on all sides, and the 3.5km trail to the Tungnath Temple (3,680m — the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, the highest Shiva temple in the world) through the rhododendron forest. The additional 1.5km from Tungnath to the Chandrashila summit (4,130m): the 360° panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, and Bandarpunch simultaneously — the most complete Uttarakhand Himalayan panorama accessible from a road point. June 2018 Chopta: the rhododendron forest on the Tungnath trail in the final June bloom — the red rhododendrons at 2,800-3,200m fading but still present, the high-altitude meadows above Tungnath in the first flush of alpine flowers (Brahmakamal beginning). March 2023 Chopta: the trail under 2m of snow, the forest entirely white, the temple closed, the Chopta meadow — the peaks above the snow forest at sunrise — the most beautiful version of the same landscape. Both June and March give extraordinary Chopta; neither gives the same Chopta.

Valley of Flowers

The UNESCO Meadow

The Valley of Flowers National Park (open July 1-October 31, 87.5 sq km, 3,658m altitude) is the most famous alpine flower meadow in India and one of the most famous in the world — the valley floor in July-August carpeted with 500+ species of Himalayan wildflowers, the Pushpawati River running through the centre, the valley walls rising to 6,000m+ peaks. The 3-day access trek: Govindghat (motor road terminus) → Ghangaria (3km, 1.5 hours) → Valley of Flowers (16km round trip from Ghangaria, day trip). The specific Valley of Flowers bloom: the Brahmakamal (the sacred lotus of the Himalaya, blooming at 4,000m, the Kedarnath area's most sacred flower), the Himalayan Blue Poppy (Meconopsis, the same rare poppy as in Bhutan's Chele La — found here in accessible quantity), and the Primula, Anemone, and Marsh Marigold covering the valley floor simultaneously in the peak July-August window. Valley closes October 31 — outside this window the gate at Govindghat will not allow entry.

Jim Corbett National Park

The First Tiger Reserve

Wildlife loversMid-range stays
Jim Corbett National Park (1,318 sq km, Ramnagar, Uttarakhand) is named after Jim Corbett (the hunter turned conservationist who wrote Man-Eaters of Kumaon, the most famous wildlife book written in India) and was India's first national park (1936). The park has the most diverse habitat of any tiger reserve in the Himalayan foothills: the riverine belt (the Ramganga River and its tributaries), the dense sal forest (the Dhikala core zone), the dry grassland (the Dhela range), and the mountain ridge (the Sitabani zone). March Corbett: the Bijrani Zone in the dry season — the vegetation at its lowest (the January fires and March dryness have reduced the understorey to the minimum), the sight lines at their maximum, and the tigers most frequently visible as they move between the reduced water sources. The Bijrani Zone morning safari (Zone 1, the most productive for tiger sightings throughout the year) at 6am March: the sal forest in the early morning light, the langur monkeys giving the alarm call that precedes every tiger movement, and — if the location is right — the tiger crossing the track. Yeeshu's March 18, 2023: tiger T-28 male at 15m on the track for 8 seconds.

Gangotri + Yamunotri

The Source Circuit

Gangotri (3,048m, the Gangotri temple — the mythological source of the Ganga, the actual glacial source at Gaumukh 18km further up the valley, accessible by a separate trek) and Yamunotri (3,291m, the Yamunotri temple, the source of the Yamuna river, the hotspring that feeds the first meals of the Char Dham circuit) are the two Char Dham pilgrimage sites that receive less coverage than Kedarnath and Badrinath but contain some of the most visually dramatic river-source geography in India. The Gangotri temple in June: the Bhagirathi River (the upper Ganga) running directly beside the temple courtyard, blue-green with glacial melt, cold enough that immersion is the act of pilgrimage that most testifies to devotion — the specific cold of a glacial river at 3,048m, approximately 8°C, the pilgrims immersing themselves in the name of the goddess. The Gangotri glacier trek (Gaumukh, 18km from Gangotri, altitude 3,892m) is the most dramatic single trek available as a Char Dham extension — the glacier snout visible 200m from the designated camping area, the specific grey-brown of a receding glacier terminus.

Jim Corbett Zone Selection Guide
Jim Corbett — Complete Zone Selection Guide

Jim Corbett National Park divides into 6 main safari zones, each with different habitat, wildlife density, and booking complexity. Choosing the right zone is the single most important decision for Corbett visitors. This guide covers what each zone offers.

The 6 Corbett Zones

ZoneHabitatTiger ProbabilityOpen SeasonBest For
BijraniSal forest + grassland · Dry mixedHIGH (year-round)Year-round (Oct-Jun preferred)Tigers, leopards, sloth bear. Most consistent year-round tiger sightings.
DhikalaPatli Dun valley + Ramganga River + dense sal · Most scenicHIGHEST (when open)Nov 15 - Jun 15 ONLYMost scenic zone, overnight forest lodges, river view, highest wildlife density. Book 90 days ahead.
JhirnaDry deciduous + grasslandMEDIUMYear-roundSloth bear, herbivores, monsoon access alternative to Bijrani
DhelaDry forest + grasslandMEDIUMYear-roundNewest zone (opened 2014), less crowded, good wildlife density
Durga DeviMountainous riverineLOW for tiger, HIGH for birdsOct 15 - Jun 15Bird-watchers, riverine ecosystems, mountain ridge views
SitabaniBuffer zone (NOT core reserve)VERY LOWYear-roundFor visitors who couldn't book core zones. AVOID if possible — operators may try to sell as 'Corbett safari' but it's outside the protected area

Booking Strategy

  • Booking Portal: corbettonline.uk.gov.in — the only official portal
  • Advance Booking Window: Opens 90 days before safari date
  • Dhikala (peak Nov-Mar): Books out within HOURS of window opening. Refresh page at 6am on the 90-day mark.
  • Bijrani (peak Mar-May): Books out within days. Book 30-45 days ahead.
  • Jhirna/Dhela: Book 15-30 days ahead. More flexibility.
  • Walk-in safaris: NOT available in peak season. Available only for off-peak Jhirna/Dhela.

Safari Timing

  • Morning safari: 6:00am-9:30am (peak winter) or 5:30am-9:00am (peak summer). Best tiger sighting probability.
  • Afternoon safari: 2:30pm-6:00pm. Cooler animals more active. Birds at water sources.
  • Both safaris in same day: Common practice. Different parts of zone, different animals visible.

Safari Cost Breakdown 2026

  • Bijrani/Dhikala day safari (Gypsy + guide for up to 6 pax): ₹2,500-5,000
  • Dhikala overnight (forest lodge + 2 days safari): ₹8,000-15,000/person
  • Sitabani (cheapest): ₹1,500-2,500
  • Per-person entry fee (Indians): ₹200-500 depending on zone
  • Gypsy hire (separate from entry): ₹2,000-3,000 if you have your own group

March Corbett Specifics (Yeeshu's Visit)

March is the dry-season peak for tiger sightings. The vegetation has been reduced by January fires + March dryness to its minimum. Sight lines are maximum. Tigers move between reduced water sources frequently. Yeeshu's March 18, 2023 Bijrani Zone morning safari: tiger T-28 male at 15m for 8 seconds. The Bijrani Zone in March gives a tiger sighting probability that the monsoon months cannot approach.

Yeeshu's Tip: For first-time Corbett visitors with 2 days: do Bijrani Zone morning + Dhikala overnight (if booked). For visitors with 1 day: Bijrani Zone morning + afternoon (same zone, different parts). AVOID Sitabani zone — operators may try to sell it as 'Corbett' but it is outside the protected core area and has very low tiger probability. Confirm specific zone name before paying.

12 Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    3 tips
    • Char Dham Yatra helicopter packages are heavily seasonally priced — Kedarnath helicopter from Phata (nearest pad) costs ₹3,500–4,500 per person one-way; booking 2–3 months ahead during peak May–June season saves 40%.

    • ATMs in Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath are unreliable or non-existent — carry sufficient cash from Rishikesh or Haridwar for any Char Dham circuit; UPI acceptance is growing at dhabas but inconsistent.

    • Jim Corbett advance booking — corbettonline.uk.gov.in · Dhikala 90 days ahead for December-March · Bijrani 30-45 days.

  • Safety

    3 tips
    • The Kedarnath route experienced a major landslide in 2013 — while the route has been reconstructed and is generally safe, monsoon season (July–August) brings active landslide risk; check NDRF advisories before travel in July–August and avoid these dates if possible.

    • Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib trek involves significant elevation gain rapidly — acclimatise at Joshimath (1,890m) for a day before ascending to Ghangaria (3,050m) and avoid any rush to summit Hemkund (4,329m).

    • Jim Corbett wildlife safety — stay in Gypsy at all times during safari. Do NOT stand up or create sudden sounds near tigers. Guides trained in wildlife encounter protocol — instructions mandatory. Travel insurance recommended for trekking sections (Kedarnath 16km, Gaumukh 18km, Chandrashila summit).

  • Etiquette

    2 tips
    • Uttarakhand's Char Dham temples have strict queue systems managed by the temple trust — follow queue rules at Kedarnath and Badrinath without attempting to use contacts or middlemen for "VIP" darshan; queue-jumping causes genuine crowd crush safety risks.

    • Many Uttarakhand villages are noise-sensitive Brahmin communities — keep music off, voices quiet, and respect local customs near temple towns of Uttarkashi, Ukhimath, and Triyuginarayan.

  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
    • Helicopter booking websites impersonating official IRCTC or GMVN portals for Kedarnath — check the URL carefully; legitimate booking is at heliyatra.irctc.co.in or directly with GMVN.

    • Rishikesh yoga retreats making unsolicited contact on Instagram offering "free stays" in exchange for promotional content — several retreats have created controversy around labour exploitation of influencers; research independently.

    • Jim Corbett "premium jungle zones" sold through travel agents sometimes don't materialise — Dhikala zone permits are genuinely limited; if your agent cannot provide the actual booking confirmation number from the official portal, the permit doesn't exist.

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Uttarakhand — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Kedarnath 4am Bhog Aarti

Temple at 50 people rather than 5,000. Glacier above in pre-dawn. Most emotionally weighted moment of Char Dham circuit.

  • Auli cable car

Nanda Devi massif from cable car in 25 minutes from Joshimath. Best mountain view accessible by cable car in India.

  • Marine Drive rafting, full 35km

Complete Rishikesh white-water experience. Roller Coaster + Double Trouble Grade IV rapids. March pre-monsoon flow most consistent.

  • Chandrashila 5am

360° panorama: Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trishul. Most accessible complete Uttarakhand summit view at 4,130m.

  • Jim Corbett Bijrani 6am March safari (

Highest tiger sighting probability of any Indian tiger reserve in March dry season. Yeeshu's T-28 tiger at 15m.

  • Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti with diya release

50,000 pilgrims. LARGEST Ganga Aarti in India. June river carrying 10,000 diyas south in 30 seconds.

  • Valley of Flowers day

UNESCO meadow in peak July-August bloom. 500+ wildflower species. Brahmakamal sacred Himalayan lotus. No equivalent in India.

  • Beatles Ashram 8am

1968 meditation chambers. Murals. Ganga through jungle. Most specifically international site in Indian travel history.

  • Gangotri + Gaumukh Glacier Source Trek

Actual glacial terminus where the Bhagirathi (upper Ganga) emerges. 18km trek from Gangotri 3,048m to Gaumukh 3,892m. Most dramatic Char Dham extension.

  • Devprayag Confluence Stopover

Where Alaknanda + Bhagirathi meet to form the Ganga. Geographical 'birth' of the Ganga visible from a single viewpoint. Sangam ghat accessible by 5-min walk from highway. Most underrated Uttarakhand stop.

  • Kedarnath without prior Yatra registration

devasthanam.uk.gov.in online registration MANDATORY during peak season (May-June, September-October). Arriving at Gaurikund without registration: turned back at gate. Register before booking any Char Dham travel.

  • Marine Drive rafting in July-August

Rishikesh rafting stretch CLOSED June 30-September 30 by government order. Monsoon river creates life-threatening conditions (Grade V+). Any operator offering July-August rafting is operating ILLEGALLY. March-June correct window.

  • Valley of Flowers outside July 1-October 31

Valley LEGALLY CLOSED outside this window. Govindghat gate will not allow entry. June visitors expecting Valley of Flowers regularly disappointed. Chopta-Tungnath is June alternative for alpine flora.

  • Auli without checking cable car schedule

Joshimath-Auli cable car runs 8am-5pm with maintenance break 1-2pm. Arriving Joshimath at 4pm leaves 1 hour of operation. Plan to arrive Joshimath by 11am for comfortable Auli day.

  • Jim Corbett booking without 30-day advance reservation

Dhikala zone books out within HOURS of booking window opening (90 days ahead) for December-March peak season. Bijrani more bookable but still requires 30-45 days advance for March.

  • Driving Rishikesh → Kedarnath without full day

Rishikesh → Gaurikund (210km) takes 7-8 hours with road conditions, landslide-prone sections, pilgrimage traffic.

Better moveDrive + trek same day physically impossible. Allow 1 full day for drive, trek second day.

  • Chopta in March without snowshoes

Chopta in March: approach trail under 1.5-2m of snow above 2,800m. Trail to Tungnath impassable for standard trekking shoes.

Better moveBring or rent snowshoes (Ukhimath/Chopta shops ₹300-500/day). June and October Tungnath trek requires no snowshoes.

  • ATM assumption beyond Joshimath

NO ATMs beyond Joshimath on Badrinath route. Joshimath ATMs frequently run out of cash during peak Char Dham season. Withdraw cash in Rishikesh (last reliable banking point before Char Dham). ₹10,000-15,000 minimum for 5-day circuit.

  • Skipping Joshimath acclimatisation night before Auli

Going direct from Rishikesh (290m) to Auli (2,519m) without 1 acclimatisation night at Joshimath (1,875m) causes altitude headache and reduces enjoyment of skiing day. Joshimath overnight is mandatory step in correct Auli planning.

  • Treating Kedarnath as day trip without overnight

16km up + temple darshan + 16km down in 1 day physically impossible for most.

Better moveStay one night at Kedarnath (GMVN ₹1,200-3,000 or dharamshala ₹400-1,500) — gives 4am Bhog Aarti access and sunrise glacier view before descent.
