About Philippines

The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands in the western Pacific — the only predominantly Christian nation in Asia, a former Spanish colony (333 years, 1565–1898) and then American territory (48 years, 1898–1946), producing a culture that is simultaneously Southeast Asian, Spanish Catholic, and American-influenced in a combination that exists nowhere else in the region.

Why visit

Why Visit Philippine

The Philippines is 7,641 islands — the world's second-largest archipelago. El Nido in Palawan has been repeatedly voted the world's best island, with lagoons enclosed by 200m limestone cliffs. Coron's WWII Japanese shipwrecks are among the most accessible quality wreck diving in SE Asia. Apo Island near Dumaguete is the Philippines' greatest marine conservation success story — sea turtles approach snorkellers at 1m distance. Siargao's Cloud 9 is a world-class hollow reef break. Batanes, the northernmost province, has Ivatan stone villages and rolling hills that look more Irish than tropical. Visa-free for Indians (30 days). Fly via Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, or Hong Kong. The Banaue Rice Terraces, carved 2,000 years ago by the Ifugao people in Luzon's Mountain Province, cover 10,360 sq km of sculpted hillside that is still in active agricultural use today. Best time: November–May.

Dry Season · December – May

27–35°C
What to expect

March finest — peak dry season, water clearest (El Nido + Coron 20m+ visibility), Boracay finest White Beach conditions, Chocolate Hills at peak brown colour. December–February: post-Christmas, quieter, same dry season quality at lower prices. April–May: hottest but still excellent for beaches. April Holy Week (Easter): biggest domestic travel week — book 3+ months ahead or schedule outside dates.

Conditions
  • Clear water
  • All islands accessible
  • Best diving visibility

Pre-Monsoon Hot · April – May

32–38°C
What to expect

April Easter Holy Week is the most crowded period in domestic Philippines travel — accommodation on Boracay, El Nido, Bohol, and Siargao fills 3+ months ahead. May: hottest month, end of dry season, water warmest. Sunburn risk highest in these months — SPF 50 essential. Boracay and El Nido remain excellent; Manila and Cebu City become uncomfortably hot.

Conditions
  • Hot
  • Dry
  • Still excellent for beaches

Typhoon Season · June – November

What to expect

The Philippines averages 20 typhoons per year, most concentrated June–November. East coast (Siargao, Eastern Samar, Luzon east coast) most affected — Siargao may close completely for surf safety during direct typhoon hits. Palawan (El Nido, Coron) has its own micro-climate — June–October is wet but typhoons rarely hit directly. Cebu and Bohol experience occasional typhoons but less than the east coast.

Conditions
  • Heavy rain
  • Typhoon risk on east coast
  • Palawan relatively protected

Late Dry — Quiet Value · January – February

26–32°C
What to expect

Same dry season quality as March but with lower prices and fewer Filipino domestic tourists (the Christmas-New Year rush ends January 10). Valentine's Day (February 14): Boracay accommodation books out 6+ weeks ahead. Otherwise, January–February is the budget traveller's best window — same weather as March at 15-20% lower SDF-equivalent package prices, all islands fully accessible.

Conditions
  • Post-holiday quiet
  • Good value

El Nido

El Nido

Limestone Karsts and Hidden Lagoons

Budget backpackersBudget stays
The 45 limestone islands of El Nido form the most visually specific geography in Southeast Asia — sheer karst walls rising 50–100m directly from the water, each island containing hidden lagoons accessible only through low cave entrances by kayak or by swimming through narrow passages. The Big Lagoon (the largest, accessible by kayak — the walls enclose a 500m-wide still lagoon with the karst reflections in the water) and the Small Lagoon (a smaller enclosure, accessed through a narrow cave passage — the interior is completely enclosed, the sky visible only through the opening above) are the two essential lagoon experiences on Tour A. The Secret Beach (Tour B) — accessible by swimming through an underwater cave at low tide, emerging inside a completely enclosed cove with a white sand beach that has no visible entrance from outside. The beach is 50m across and entirely surrounded by karst. Standing on the Secret Beach in March at 8am: 15 other people maximum, the karst above, the sea visible only through the underwater passage below the surface. The specific experience of a place that appears to have no entrance.

Coron

Coron

WWII Wrecks and the Clearest Lake

DiversBudget stays
The Japanese fleet sunk in Coron Bay on September 24, 1944 by US Navy dive bombers now lies at 10–40m depth — 12 ships turned into coral reefs over 80 years. The Okikawa Maru (a tanker, 160m long, its bridge and superstructure intact and penetrable by certified divers at 10–30m) is the most accessible wreck — the interior corridors, the engine room, the navigation bridge, all visible through scuba or freediving. The Irako (the largest wreck, a supply vessel, 147m long) has the most spectacular coral growth — the hull covered in soft corals, hard corals, and schooling fish at every depth. For non-divers: Kayangan Lake — a brackish inland lake surrounded by limestone cliffs, accessible by a 10-minute wooden stairway trail from the bangka landing. The water at Kayangan has the specific clarity of a lake fed by both freshwater springs and seawater intrusion — 20m+ visibility, the limestone bottom visible from the surface. Officially designated the clearest lake in Asia. March: the lowest water level of the year gives the widest viewing platform and the most accessible trail.

Boracay White Beach

Boracay White Beach

The 4km of Powdered Coral

HoneymoonersLuxury stays
White Beach is 4km of fine powdered coral sand on the western coast of Boracay island — the sand is not silica (quartz) but ground coral, giving it the specific soft texture (it doesn't heat up the same way as silica sand) and the specific white that the island is named for. Station 1 (the northern section) has the finest sand and the least commercial development on the beach itself — the major resort hotels are set back behind the coconut palms. Station 2 (the central section) has the beach bars, the paraw sailboats (the traditional outrigger sailing catamarans that sail at sunset for ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person), and the maximum beach activity. Station 3 (southern) has the budget guesthouses and the local restaurants. The Boracay sunset: the sun drops directly into the Sibuyan Sea from White Beach at approximately 6pm in March — the paraw sailboats visible against the orange sky, the beach lined with the silhouettes of guests who have walked down specifically for this. The March sunset is the specific Boracay image that has been photographed 40 million times and is still accurate when you see it in person.

Chocolate Hills, Bohol

Chocolate Hills, Bohol

Dawn at the Viewing Deck

The 1,268 Chocolate Hills of Carmen, Bohol — a geological formation of conical limestone hills covered in grass that turns brown (chocolate) in the dry season (November–May). Each hill is almost perfectly cone-shaped, 30–50m tall, the mathematical regularity of the formation the most immediately striking aspect — standing at the Carmen viewing deck at 7am in March and looking at 50 hills visible simultaneously, each the same shape, is the experience that makes the folklore around their origin (a giant's heartbreak, competing lovers, divine intervention) seem like the correct explanation. March: the peak brown season. The hills are at their most chocolate-specifically chocolate. The dawn light from the viewing deck (arrive before 7am for the pre-tour-bus quiet) illuminates the south face of each hill while the north remains in shadow — the alternating light and shadow across 1,268 cones in the March morning is the finest Chocolate Hills visual of the year.

Intramuros, Manila

Intramuros, Manila

The Walled Spanish City

The 0.67 sq km walled city of Manila, built by the Spanish beginning in 1571, is the most intact colonial urban area in Southeast Asia — the walls, the cobblestone streets, the churches, and the forts survived the Pacific War bombing of 1945 (barely — the city was almost entirely destroyed, and the rebuilt structures use the original foundations and sometimes the original stone). Fort Santiago (the military fortress at the western end of Intramuros, where Jose Rizal spent his last nights before execution in 1896 — the footprints in the stone marking his final walk to Luneta Park are preserved in the floor of the fort passage) is the most emotionally weighted site in Manila. The San Agustin Church (1607, the oldest stone church in the Philippines, UNESCO World Heritage) has survived every earthquake, fire, and bombardment that destroyed the rest of Intramuros — the baroque interior (original painted ceiling, the carved mahogany choir stalls, the 1607 stone floor) is the best-preserved colonial religious interior in the Philippines. The Binondo Chinatown (1km from Intramuros, established 1594 — the oldest Chinatown in the world) for the post-Intramuros lunch.

Siargao

Siargao

Cloud 9 and the Sugba Lagoon

SurfersMid-range stays
Siargao is the teardrop-shaped island in the Surigao Sea — the surfing capital of the Philippines built around the Cloud 9 surf break, a world-class right-hand reef break that barrels over a shallow reef at the island's northeast tip. March surf at Cloud 9: the dry season NE swell produces consistent 1.5–2.5m waves — intermediate-level rideable with experience, spectacular to watch from the wooden tower platform adjacent to the break. For non-surfers: the Sugba Lagoon (30 minutes by bangka from General Luna, the main Siargao town) — the largest and clearest enclosed lagoon in the Philippines, the water a specific jade-green in morning light, the surrounding mangrove visible through the clear water at the shallow edges. The bangka drops anchor in the centre of the lagoon and the specific Sugba experience is swimming in still, warm, clear water surrounded by the mangrove landscape with no other structure visible in any direction. The three-island trip (Naked Island — a sandbar with palm trees, Dako Island, Guyam Island) is the Siargao equivalent of El Nido island hopping at lower complexity and lower cost.

Cebu

Cebu

The Sardine Run and the Ancient Cross

Cebu City (the oldest city in the Philippines, founded by Magellan in 1521) is the gateway to the Visayas — the Magellan's Cross (the original cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, or rather the bamboo casing covering what is claimed to be the original cross, in the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño adjacent to the Cebu City Hall), the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño (containing the oldest Catholic relic in the Philippines — the Santo Niño figure given by Magellan to the Cebuano queen), and the Cebu Heritage Monument (a bronze frieze depicting 500 years of Cebuano history). South of Cebu City: Moalboal (2 hours by bus, the Sardine Run — a school of millions of sardines that moves as a single organism in the shallow water off Panagsama Beach, accessible by snorkelling at 3–5m depth — the most accessible and most spectacular mass fish behaviour available in the Philippines without diving certification), and Oslob (further south, 3 hours, the whale shark interaction — the most debated Philippine wildlife experience).

The Route Between El Nido and Coron

The 4-hour fast boat route between El Nido and Coron (the El Nido–Coron boat route, ₹2,940–₹4,410 per person, departs 8am, arrives Coron noon) passes through the Linapacan island group — 50 uninhabited islands of white sand beaches and coral reefs in water that is, by any objective measurement, the clearest in the Philippines. The boat stops at Linapacan Island (a sandbar and reef snorkelling stop) and at one beach lunch stop on the route. The Coron–El Nido direction (or vice versa) on this route is the most specific way to experience the Palawan landscape at sea level — the islands passing for 4 hours at bangka speed. The route is the reason Palawan was voted "World's Best Island" multiple times — the combination of the island density, the water colour, and the limestone geography that is unique to this 400km stretch of the Philippine archipelago.

Philippines Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    2 tips
    • Philippine ATMs have low withdrawal limits (PHP 10,000–15,000 per transaction) and often charge PHP 200–250 per foreign card transaction — BDO and Metrobank ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards; withdraw maximum allowed each time.

    • El Nido and Coron have limited ATMs — bring sufficient PHP from Puerto Princesa or Manila; card acceptance at island resorts has improved but is inconsistent for anything below 4-star.

  • Safety

    2 tips
    • Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago have active conflict zones and kidnapping risk — the DFA Philippines Travel Advisory classifies parts of Mindanao as Alert Level 2–3; check before any Mindanao itinerary and follow Indian Embassy Philippines advisories.

    • Philippine public buses are involved in road accidents at high rates — particularly provincial overnight buses; airlines (Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines) between cities are safer and comparable in price for long distances.

  • Etiquette

    2 tips
    • Filipino hospitality means "no" is never said directly — "siguro" (maybe) and "mamaya na" (later) often mean no; read context and don't push for a direct answer when a soft response is given.

    • Do not photograph or film Lumad and Palawan tribal communities without asking permission through a community guide — indigenous Filipinos have been commercially exploited through photography without benefit; asking is mandatory.

  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
    • NAIA (Manila International Airport) taxi scams — exit only through Terminal's official taxi queue and refuse all approaches inside arrivals hall; fixed-rate coupon taxis are legitimate; metered taxis flagged inside the airport are not.

    • Island-hopping boat "shared tour" that becomes a "private tour" surcharge — confirm in writing whether your booking is shared or private; operators sometimes take only your group on a shared-rate boat and demand private-rate payment at the end.

    • Sunken treasure and gemstone dealers near Coron — buyers are invited to view "Spanish colonial silver" found on a wreck; these are tourist theatres with no genuine treasure involved.

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Philippines — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • El Nido Tour A 6am (₹1,470

₹2,200/person) — Big Lagoon + Small Lagoon before the fleet arrives. The 6am version is a different Philippines from the 10am version.

  • El Nido → Coron fast boat (₹2,940

₹4,410) — 4 hours through the clearest water in the Philippines. Uninhabited islands. Finest inter-island boat journey in SE Asia.

  • Boracay paraw sunset sail (₹1,500

₹2,500) — White Beach from the sea, at sunset, from traditional outrigger sailing catamaran. The specific Boracay ending.

  • Siargao Sugba Lagoon (₹2,200

₹2,940/person) — Clearest inland lagoon in the Philippines. Jade-green still water. No other structure visible in any direction.

  • Coron Kayangan Lake (included in island hopping tour)

Clearest lake in Asia. 20m+ visibility. Limestone karst reflections. March water level at its lowest + clearest.

  • Chocolate Hills dawn, March (₹220

₹440 entrance) — 1,268 identical chocolate cones at their most brown. March dry season morning light. 7am quiet before tour buses.

  • Fort Santiago Intramuros (₹220 entrance)

Rizal footprints in the stone floor. Most historically weighted site in Manila. Walk through Spanish colonial walled city.

  • Moalboal sardine run snorkelling (₹220 equipment rental)

Billions of sardines moving as one organism at 3m depth. Most accessible spectacular marine spectacle in Philippines.

  • Cloud 9 watching platform Siargao (Free)

Wooden viewing tower adjacent to world-class right-hand reef break. March NE swell consistent 1.5-2.5m waves. Spectator sport atmosphere.

  • Cebu lechon at Carcar Market (₹220

₹440) — Whole roasted pig with herb stuffing. Anthony Bourdain called Cebu lechon "the best pig I ever had". Carcar Market: hot from the roaster.

  • El Nido island hopping without early departure

Tour A at 6am vs 9am is not the same experience. By 11am Big Lagoon has 15 bangka boats + 150 tourists.

    Better moveBook the earliest departure.

  • eTravel registration forgotten

Indians need eTravel QR code (etravel.gov.ph) minimum 72 hours before departure. Forgetting causes delays at immigration. Register before booking anything.

  • Philippines in typhoon season without checking region

June–November affects regions differently. Palawan more protected than east coast (Siargao). Research regional typhoon patterns.

  • Boracay without going to Station 1

Most tourists stay near Station 2 (commercial) and never walk north. Finest sand at Station 1. Quietest beach in March = Station 1. 15-min walk.

  • Oslob whale sharks without understanding the ethics

Most debated Philippine wildlife experience. Don't touch (illegal), 3m distance, first 5:30am boat. Or choose Moalboal sardines as unambiguous alternative.

  • Not checking Holy Week dates

Easter Holy Week busiest domestic travel week. If late March/early April 2026, all flights/ferries/beach accommodations fully booked.

    Better moveBook 3+ months ahead.

  • Manila only as a transit

Intramuros + Fort Santiago + Binondo Chinatown + Manila Bay sunset deserve half-day minimum. Most Indians fly directly to islands same day, missing only Spanish colonial walled city in SE Asia.

  • Paying tourist price for tricycles + habal-habal

Local motorbike taxis (Siargao, El Nido) charge ₹150–₹300 per trip. Tourists quoted ₹500–₹1,000. Confirm rate with accommodation before riding.

  • El Nido without doing both Tour A AND Tour C

Tour A covers Big/Small Lagoon. Tour C covers Hidden Beach + Star Beach + Matinloc. Skipping one misses half of El Nido. Allocate 2 tour days.

  • Coron without Kayangan Lake

The clearest lake in Asia is the iconic Coron non-diver experience. Often skipped when people focus only on wrecks. Kayangan Lake at 7am (before other boats) is essential.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs (8 Questions)

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Philippines.

Yes — 30 days visa-free entry for Indian passport holders. Register at etravel.gov.ph minimum 72 hours before departure (free, generates a QR code). Carry confirmed return ticket and 6-month passport validity. Verify current status at dfa.gov.ph before booking — visa policies can update.
Budget: ₹45,000–₹70,000/person (flights included). Mid-range: ₹85,000–₹1,30,000. Flights: ₹22,000–₹55,000 return. El Nido island hopping (Tour A + C): ₹2,940–₹4,400. El Nido → Coron boat: ₹2,940–₹4,410.
December–May (dry season). March is the finest month — peak dry season, clearest water, lowest rain probability, all islands accessible. April Holy Week: busiest domestic travel. June–November: typhoon season on the east coast. Palawan (El Nido, Coron) is drier than the east coast year-round.
Different experiences. El Nido: limestone karst islands, hidden lagoons, snorkelling, island-hopping — the most visually dramatic island complex in the Philippines. Coron: WWII wreck diving, Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoons — the most unique non-beach Philippine experience. Both on the El Nido → Coron fast boat route (4 hours). Include both.
Excellent. El Nido island hopping (kayaking, snorkelling, hidden beaches) requires no diving. Siargao (three-island tour, Sugba Lagoon) requires no diving. Boracay (White Beach) requires no diving. Coron: Kayangan Lake + Twin Lagoons are the non-diver equivalent of the wreck experience. Moalboal sardine run is snorkelling at 3m depth.
Return economy: ₹22,000–₹55,000. Philippine Airlines, AirAsia (via KL), Singapore Airlines (via Singapore). Manila is the primary hub. Book 3+ weeks ahead for March. 4–6 weeks ahead for Holy Week and Christmas.
Yes — White Beach is genuinely as beautiful as the photographs. March: peak dry season, finest Boracay conditions, the sand at its whitest, the water at its clearest. The paraw sailboat sunset is specifically Boracay. Station 1 at 5:30am (empty, powdered coral, dawn light) is the version of Boracay that the photographs attempt to show.
7 days: El Nido + Boracay (essential minimum, the two finest beaches). 10 days: Sarthak's complete circuit (El Nido + Coron + Boracay + Bohol). 14 days: full Philippines with Siargao and Manila. Minimum for meaningful Philippines: 10 days.

It is 44 countries with 24 official languages, 50 UNESCO-listed cities, and a train network that takes you from the Eiffel Tower to the Colosseum without a single flight. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed over 200 client itineraries across Europe and the most consistent feedback is that Europe delivers more than expected and less than brochure fears suggest. For Indian travellers, ONE Schengen visa opens 27 countries. This guide covers every visa step, every exchange rate, and every planning decision.Explore guideExperience Regal London: Big Ben, Royal Palaces & Custom GetawayspopularLondonVikas Rana is an Atravelq destination expert who visited London in March 2022 during early spring — daffodils in Hyde Park, the last cool grey days before shoulder-season prices lifted, and museums operating at their most accessible visitor density of the year. London layers 2,000 years of history — Roman walls, Tudor palaces, Victorian rail stations, and 21st-century glass towers — across 9 million people. It is the world's greatest free museum city, the most authentic Indian food outside Asia, and a theatre district unmatched anywhere on Earth.Explore guideExplore Iconic USA: New York Skylines, Canyons & Custom HolidayspopularUSAThe United States is not one destination — it is a continent's worth of them, from the vertical energy of New York to the desert theatre of the Grand Canyon and the Pacific light of California. For Indian travellers it delivers the widest range of experiences a single visa unlocks: world cities, cinematic road trips, national parks, theme-park capitals, and some of the best Indian food outside India. Pick one coast per trip, and the 10-year B1/B2 visa turns a once-in-a-lifetime journey into a decade of returns.Explore guideUnited KingdompopularUnited KingdomThe United Kingdom packs four nations, 33 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the world's greatest concentration of free museums, and a 1,000-year royal heritage into an island smaller than Madhya Pradesh. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed hundreds of client itineraries through Britain — from London-only honeymooners to three-generation Scotland circuits — and the consistent surprise is how much of the UK's best experience costs nothing at all. English everywhere, the largest Indian diaspora in Europe, and a rail network that connects London to Edinburgh faster than Delhi to Jaipur.Explore guideExperience Wild South Africa: Kruger Big Five & Custom SafarisnewSouth AfricaSouth Africa is where a single trip delivers the Big Five safari, a UNESCO-listed wine valley, one of the world's greatest coastal drives, a beach city under a flat-topped mountain, and a Soweto township history that changed the course of 20th-century politics. No African country packs more contrasting landscapes, no wildlife destination comes closer to guaranteeing the lion-and-elephant combination, and no Indian traveller leaves without the specific awareness that Mahatma Gandhi's political life began in Durban in 1893 — on this soil.Explore guideExplore Historic Great Britain: London, Scottish Highlands & Tailored TripspopularGreat BritainGreat Britain packs a startling amount into one compact island — the world-city buzz of London, the castles and lochs of Scotland, the storybook villages of the Cotswolds, and the peaks of Wales, all linked by one of the planet's best rail networks. For Indian travellers it's uniquely easy: everyone speaks English, they drive on the left just like home, and the food scene runs from Michelin stars to the best Indian restaurants outside India. For Indian travellers it is a genuine bucket-list journey: far to reach, but astonishing in reward, and surprisingly accessible if you already hold a US, UK, or Schengen visa. Give yourself time to acclimatise to the Andes, plan around the dry season, and Peru delivers history, adventure, and flavour on a scale few countries can match.Explore guideUnveil Ancient Egypt: Pyramids of Giza, Nile Cruises & Bespoke ToursnewEgyptEgypt is the only destination on Earth where you stand at 6am in front of a 4,500-year-old monument built by 100,000 workers over 20 years — and then drive 600km south to find 63 underground royal tombs, a temple complex larger than Vatican City, and a river that has sustained civilisation longer than any other geographic feature in human history. The e-Visa takes 3-5 days. The Pyramids have been waiting 4,500 years.Explore guideDiscover Classic Central Europe: Prague, Vienna, Budapest & Custom TourstrendingCentral EuropeCentral Europe is where the continent keeps its best-value secrets — imperial capitals, medieval old towns, thermal baths, alpine lakes and the Adriatic coast, all inside one Schengen visa and at a fraction of Western Europe's daily costs.
