Manali is the gateway to the high Himalayas — 2,050m above sea level, flanked by the Beas River and pine forests, with Rohtang Pass connecting it to the cold deserts of Lahaul-Spiti. I have been here three times and returned with a different understanding each time: June 2022 showed me snow at eye level and traffic I was unprepared for; October 2023 delivered a golden valley and a world-record tunnel into Lahaul; February 2025 gave me a snow-covered town, quiet streets, and the mountains closer than any photograph suggests.
Snow access without trekking certification. A world-record tunnel into a completely different landscape in 10 minutes. Adventure sports for beginners and experienced travellers equally. A valley that changes personality completely between seasons. It is among India's most affordable complete mountain experiences.
The first time I went to Manali — June 2022, off an overnight bus at 6 am — I understood the Rohtang queue before I understood anything else about the place. We were in a line of vehicles that took 90 minutes to move 3 kilometres, and the whole time I was watching the mountain grow taller ahead. By the time we reached the snowline and everyone piled out, I had forgotten about the queue entirely. That is what Rohtang does — it absorbs the inconvenience of getting there. October 2023 was the opposite: the Atal Tunnel made Lahaul feel effortless, and Sissu's turquoise glacier lake felt like discovering something the world had not yet publicised. February 2025 was quieter — snowfall in the town, footprints on Mall Road, and eleven people at Hadimba Temple. All three Manalias are real. All three are worth the trip.
Top Pick for Rohtang
Permit books out fast in June. Book everything 3–4 weeks ahead. Maximum tourist traffic.
Caution
Atal Tunnel route safer for Lahaul. Prices 20–30% lower. Adventure operators may close.
Best Balance
October 2023: golden valley, Atal Tunnel + Sissu, Rohtang crowd-free. 20–30% cheaper.
Snow-lovers and skiers
February 2025: magical. Town under snow. Atal Tunnel stays open.
June 2022: Peak Rohtang season — snow at the pass, paragliding at its best. But the traffic queue at Gulaba checkpost took 90 minutes. The snow at the top was worth it — but go early. Leave Manali by 6:30am. I went at 9am and paid for it.
October 2023: A revelation. Rohtang closed November 1st — I went October 20th and had the pass nearly to myself. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu took 10 minutes and delivered me into a valley that looked like a different country. Sissu Lake was the finest single landscape moment of that trip. Naggar Castle — the most underrated site near Manali.
February 2025: Town under snow, Mall Road quiet, eleven people at Hadimba Temple. Solang Valley skiing with beginner slopes operational and mountains nearly silent. The evenings with a bowl of Siddu (Himachali steamed bread with ghee) and a heated room were the finest possible end to a day. Winter Manali is deeply underrated.
Curated highlights — open any experience for the insider detail that makes it worth doing.
Rohtang at 8:30 AM in the morning window — snow, Lahaul Valley dropping away on the other side, and perhaps 20 minutes before the tourist crowd peaks. The logistics game (early permit, early departure) is what determines whether this experience is extraordinary or exhausting. In June 2022, I stood at the summit for 20 minutes before a single tourist walked into my field of view. That window was why the trip was worth every queue and permit hassle.
Duration: 10–15 min flight. The Solang launch point is a short hike up the slope. The instructor checks the harness, gives a 90-second briefing, and tells you to run. The valley drops away as the wing catches air. The flight shows you Manali from 600–800 metres above it.
Ten minutes through the tunnel, and the landscape changes completely. Sissu Lake is turquoise, still, surrounded by white peaks. In October 2023: twelve people at Sissu Lake. Compare this with Rohtang's 1,200-vehicle daily cap. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu is the best-value, least-crowded, no-permit Manali day trip available.
The Hadimba Temple is always there. The experience depends entirely on timing. At 7:30 AM — before tourist groups arrive — the cedar forest is quiet, the light through the trees is angled, and the 500-year-old carved doors are visible without a crowd. This temple at 7:30 AM is a different place from the same temple at 11 AM.
Solang Valley skiing in February 2025 — properly snow-packed beginner slopes, patient instructors, and a nearly quiet mountain. Not Gulmarg-standard in infrastructure — runs are shorter, après-ski is a Maggi at a roadside stall. But for a first skiing experience in India: the most accessible, most affordable, and least intimidating starting point.
Grade 3–4 rapids between Pirdi and Jhiri (40km from Manali, Kullu area). In June 2022, with meltwater high, the ride was fast, and the rapids were genuinely powerful. In October 2023, post-monsoon clarity made the water a deep green and the rapids readable from the raft.
Best Spots: Siddu — Vashisht or Old Manali dhabas · Trout — Vashisht restaurants · Thukpa — any Tibetan café, Old Manali. Siddu (steamed Himachali bread stuffed with walnut, poppy seed, and spice paste — served with ghee) is one of the most distinctly regional dishes in any Indian state, and most tourists never order it. Trout from the Beas is farmed locally and served fresh. Himachali apples in season (October–November): buy directly from roadside orchards for ₹50–₹80/kg vs. ₹150–₹200 in Delhi.
Start from Gulaba (22km from Manali). Bhrigu Lake (4,300m) is a strenuous day hike — 10km return, 900m elevation gain, above the snowline. The lake (sacred, believed to be where sage Bhrigu meditated) remains frozen most of the year; in summer, the thaw reveals a high-altitude alpine lake surrounded by peaks.
Old Manali's main street: approximately 15 cafés within 300 metres, competing on view, warmth, and menu. In October 2023, I spent three consecutive evenings moving between them, ordering progressively more ambitious things from menus. Best: Café 1947 (apple products, wood stove, excellent pie) · The Lazy Dog Lounge (river view) · Dylan's Toasted & Roasted (coffee specialists).
A 500-year-old royal palace with valley views. Lunch in the castle courtyard. The Nicholas Roerich Gallery, 1km away, has his extraordinary Himalayan paintings — almost never crowded. Two sites, one half-day,Best cost-to-experience ratio in the Kullu-Manali valley.
See how each route grows as you add days — from a focused highlights trip to the full journey.
6:30 AM depart · Arrive Rohtang 8:30–9:00 AM · Summit views · Lahaul panorama · Descend by 11:00 AM · Optional Atal Tunnel + Sissu stop on return. Old Manali evening.

Quick Answer — Rohtang Permit? ₹550/vehicle for tourism sightseeing (return to Manali same day). ₹50 for beyond Rohtang (Lahaul/Spiti/Leh). Permit is for the VEHICLE — if travelling by HRTC bus, no permit needed. Apply at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in (new 2026 URL — old .nic.in discontinued). Two daily windows: 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Peak season books out in minutes.
Tourism Permit: Visiting Rohtang for sightseeing, returning to Manali same day. Fee: ₹550/vehicle (₹500 base + ₹50 congestion). Quota: 1,200/day (800 petrol + 400 diesel).
Beyond Rohtang Permit: Continuing past Rohtang to Lahaul, Spiti, Keylong, or Leh. Fee: ₹50 congestion fee only. No cap.
Bikes/Motorcycles: Two-wheelers. Undertaking certificate from the SDM Office, Manali (Free). Within the 1,200 daily quota.
Go to rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in — official URL (migrated from old .nic.in in 2026)
Log in with your mobile number
Enter vehicle details: registration number, fuel type, and year of manufacture. Vehicles over 10 years old are automatically rejected. PUC must be valid — portal cross-checks Parivahan national database.
Select travel date (next 6 days only — not beyond)
Select window: Morning (10:00 AM release) or Evening (4:00 PM release)
Pay ₹550 online
Download and PRINT the permit — printed copy mandatory at Gulaba checkpost
Carry permit, vehicle RC, PUC certificate, and valid ID on travel day
Peak season (May–June): Be on the portal at exactly 9:58 AM — sells out within minutes
Use mobile data, not hotel Wi-Fi — portal limits 2 permits per IP per week
Book 2–3 days ahead (6 days maximum)
Tuesday: No permits — Rohtang closed for maintenance, no exceptions
Fees are non-refundable
Vehicles over 10 years old: NOT ALLOWED toward Rohtang.
Yeeshu's Tip: In June 2022, I let my taxi driver get the permit. He booked the afternoon window instead of the morning. We arrived at the pass when crowds were already there, and the light was flat. Book the permit yourself, morning window, two days ahead. Leave Manali by 6:30 AM.
Flight connections from the major Indian hubs, then how to move around once you land — fares, journey times and what to book ahead.

Carry sufficient cash: ATMs reliable in Manali town. Rohtang summit, Lahaul Valley, trekking routes: cash only.
Local taxi fares are union-regulated. Do not overpay.
Snow gear rental at Rohtang: Legitimate, but some vendors quote tourists higher. Clarify the rate before putting on gear.
An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.
The only road-accessible pass showing two completely different climate zones. Morning timing is the difference between extraordinary and exhausting.
World record tunnel + a turquoise glacial lake + almost no crowds. Best value, least crowded, no-permit Manali day trip.
Kullu Valley from 800 metres. Best aerial view of Manali without a helicopter.
Natural sulphur spring, ancient temple, genuinely hot water, genuinely free. The finest 30 minutes of my February 2025 trip.
500-year-old palace, valley views, extraordinary painting collection — almost never crowded. Best cost-to-experience ratio in the valley.
What Manali regulars return for. Not the Mall Road, not the permit — the apple orchards, the stream sound, the warm cafés.
Walnut-stuffed steamed bread with ghee. Cannot be found at this quality outside Himachal Pradesh. Under-ordered by tourists who default to Maggi.
Manali — The Beas Valley road journey is part of the experience. Certainty that a flight cannot provide.
The Gulaba queue in June: 60–90 minutes from 9am onward.
Better moveLeave Manali by 6:30–7:00 AM. Not negotiable.

No African country packs more contrasting landscapes, no wildlife destination comes closer to guaranteeing the lion-and-elephant combination, and no Indian traveller leaves without the specific awareness that Mahatma Gandhi's political life began in Durban in 1893 — on this soil.Explore guide
popularGreat BritainGreat Britain packs a startling amount into one compact island — the world-city buzz of London, the castles and lochs of Scotland, the storybook villages of the Cotswolds, and the peaks of Wales, all linked by one of the planet's best rail networks. Get the UK visitor visa sorted early, and a week or two here delivers history, royalty, film locations, and scenery in a single hassle-free trip.Explore guide
trendingPeruPeru is South America's headline act — the misty ruins of Machu Picchu, the Inca stonework of Cusco, the reed islands of Lake Titicaca, and a food scene that has made Lima one of the world's great eating cities. For Indian travellers it is a genuine bucket-list journey: far to reach, but astonishing in reward, and surprisingly accessible if you already hold a US, UK, or Schengen visa. Give yourself time to acclimatise to the Andes, plan around the dry season, and Peru delivers history, adventure, and flavour on a scale few countries can match.Explore guide
newEgyptEgypt is the only destination on Earth where you stand at 6am in front of a 4,500-year-old monument built by 100,000 workers over 20 years — and then drive 600km south to find 63 underground royal tombs, a temple complex larger than Vatican City, and a river that has sustained civilisation longer than any other geographic feature in human history. The e-Visa takes 3-5 days. The Pyramids have been waiting 4,500 years.Explore guide

honeymoonParisParis is the most visited city on Earth and the most misunderstood — travellers arrive for the Eiffel Tower and leave having discovered that the real city lives in its morning bakeries, its riverbanks at dusk and its neighbourhood squares. I am Anmol Verma, and after planning hundreds of Paris itineraries for Indian travellers, my core advice has never changed: Paris rewards the traveller who walks, wakes early and sits down often.Explore guide
