Dal Lake Houseboat (Srinagar)
- Iconic floating stay
- traditional Kashmiri wood interiors

A shikara ride on Dal Lake, the Gulmarg gondola, the pine forests of Pahalgam — it was a scheduled tourist checklist. In September 2024, I saw Sonmarg and Yusmarg, stayed on a small houseboat at Nigeen Lake, and understood what Kashmir actually is: the place textbooks call 'paradise' and photographers call 'heaven' is, in real life, somewhere the smell of morning chai, the colour of chinar leaves, and the mountain air combine in a way nothing prepares you for.
Why Visit Kashmir in 2026? Because there is no landscape like this anywhere else in India. Stepping out of the Gulmarg Gondola at Phase 2 and standing on permanent snow at 4,390m — that is possible without doing a Himalayan trek. Waking up in a houseboat on Dal Lake and looking out at mist-covered mountains through the window — that is not a hotel experience, it is a life experience. And in autumn, when the chinar leaves turn red-orange and Pahalgam's valley looks like an artist's painting — that is what people come back for again and again.
I spent my first night on Dal Lake in October 2022 — a traditional houseboat called Mr. New Prince, in a quiet corner of Nigeen Lake. Waking up at 6am and sitting on the upper deck with a cup of tea while the whole lake was covered in mist and a shikara slowly drifted past with a wazaan rowing — no photograph, no Instagram reel, no travel blog prepares you for that. You are just... there. On the second trip, in September 2024, I saw Yusmarg — 47km from Srinagar — where there were almost no tourists, horses were grazing in the meadows, and the Doodh Ganga river was completely transparent. That version of Kashmir — off-the-beaten-path, away from the crowds — was the more real one. This guide has both versions: popular and less-traveled.
Top Pick
Asia's largest Tulip Garden in April. Pahalgam meadows are green. Gulmarg has a mix of snow and greenery. But April brings maximum crowds and hotel prices at peak. Book 4–6 weeks ahead.
Beautiful but overcrowded
Hotels are 30–40% more expensive. Gondola wait times are at peak. Sonamarg and Pahalgam are best. Hiking is excellent in Gulmarg.
Most recommended
Yeeshu’s field noteOctober is my personal favourite month. The red-orange of chinar leaves paints the entire valley. Hotels 20–30% cheaper, the Gondola without a long wait, and the golden hour in Sonamarg is extraordinary.
Perfect for skiers
Srinagar under a blanket of snow. The roads to Pahalgam and Sonamarg close. The Jammu–Srinagar highway is sometimes blocked. The frozen Dal Lake scene is extraordinary.
October 2022 (Classic Circuit — Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam): Arrived in Srinagar in the first week of October — the chinar was just turning, but in early October the trees in some places were already red while in others they were still green. A boat ride on Dal Lake in the morning mist. Reached Gulmarg at 9:30am — only a 20 minute wait for Gondola Phase 2. Kashmir was genuinely less crowded in October; enjoyed Betaab Valley alone in Pahalgam. This is my favourite Kashmir season, period.
September 2024 (Offbeat — Sonamarg + Yusmarg + Nigeen Lake): September is a bit early for autumn — the colours weren't as deep as in October. But Sonamarg in September was extraordinary — no tourists near Thajiwas Glacier, blue sky, white glacier, green meadows. Going to Yusmarg was September's best decision — 47km from Srinagar, almost no tourists, the Doodh Ganga river crystal clear. A houseboat on Nigeen Lake (15–20% cheaper than Dal Lake and significantly quieter) — a real, unhurried Kashmir experience.
Curated highlights — open any experience for the insider detail that makes it worth doing.
The Phase 2 Gondola is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience — if that phrase still works. Rising from Kongdoori (Phase 1 endpoint, 3,080m) to Apharwat Peak (4,390m, 3,979m actual summit point) takes 12 minutes. Up there, the snow is year-round — 6 feet deep in January, 2–3 feet even in June. On the horizon: the Kashmir Valley, the mountains of Pakistan, and on a clear day, Nanga Parbat (8,126m — the world's 8th highest peak). When I took the first look from the top one morning in October 2022, I genuinely couldn't speak for a few seconds. This is a description, not an exaggeration. Duration: Forenoon slot is best (9 am–11 am) · Total experience: 3–4 hours, including both phases.
The Dal Lake houseboat experience isn't just an accommodation choice — it is part of Kashmir's cultural identity. Inside: carved walnut wood walls, traditional Kashmiri carpets, bay windows with a view of the lake. The morning breakfast — kahwa chai, kandur bread (local bakers deliver by boat), and eggs — is served on the lake amid the mist. In the evening, a shikara ride before sunset, back to the houseboat, and a genuinely unmatched night above the quiet lake. I spent my first night on a houseboat in October 2022 — I hadn't thought before that this even existed in India. Duration: Minimum 1 night · 2 nights ideal.
The sunset shikara ride is famous — but the sunrise ride is genuinely extraordinary. 5:45 am: complete silence on the lake, mist covering everything, the floating vegetable market boats slowly coming in (local farmers are on the lake from 4:30 am), and the first light spreading slowly over the Zabarwan Hills. In an hour, you can circle the whole lake — lotus beds, floating gardens, Char Chinar island (an island of four chinar trees in the middle of the lake), and the line of houseboats. The sunrise shikara in October 2022 is my clearest Kashmir memory.
Wazwan is Kashmir's traditional ceremonial meal — up to 36 dishes, mostly meat-based, traditionally cooked by a waza (master chef). Rogan Josh (aromatic lamb in Kashmiri red chilli gravy), Yakhni (lamb in yogurt), Aab Gosht (lamb in milk), Tabak Maaz (fried lamb ribs), Seekh Kabab, and Gushtaba (minced meat balls in yogurt — Wazwan's concluding dish). In the traditional setting, four people sit together around a traem (large copper plate). I had my first authentic Wazwan at Ahdoos Hotel in Srinagar in October 2022 — Gushtaba was the most surprising dish, extraordinary in both texture and flavour in an unexpected way.
Gulmarg is India's only world-class ski resort — and that comparison holds not just domestically but against international standards. Snow quality is excellent, December–February — powder snow in January. Compared to European ski resorts, the price is 1/3 for similar quality. For first-time skiers, Gulmarg is genuinely the best starting point in India — instructors are professional, and the slopes are manageable.
Kahwa is Kashmir's national beverage — green tea, Kashmiri saffron (the world's most valuable spice by weight — Kashmir produces ¾ of India's total production), cardamom, cinnamon, and almonds. It's brewed in a traditional samovar (a copper vessel with hot coals inside). The flavour is mild, aromatic, and warming — something the chai of the plains cannot deliver. With breakfast alongside kandur bread, and again at night after dinner. Kahwa is served every morning on a houseboat — it is the memory you take back from Kashmir.
Visit Nishat Bagh (1633 AD, built for Emperor Jahangir by Asaf Khan) before sunrise — the gate opens at 6 am in the non-tourist season. The terraced garden descends from the Zabarwan Hills towards Dal Lake — 12 terraces, each with fountains, flowers, and chinar trees. At sunrise, the light reaches the garden before the Zabarwan Hills — and the chinar leaves (red-orange in October) glow in that light. I arrived at 6:30 am in October 2022 — 8 people in the garden. In the evening, the same place had 200+. Timing is everything.
Betaab Valley got its name from the 1983 Sunny Deol film — and yes, it is gorgeous. 15km from Pahalgam, along the Lidder River, between pine forests, an open meadow. And there is no entry fee just for Betaab Valley — drive in, park, walk around. I arrived at 8am in October 2022 — there were 3 other tourists in the entire valley. The scent of pine, the sound of water, and a genuinely green open space. Aru Valley (12km from Pahalgam in the other direction) is equally beautiful and even less crowded.
Thajiwas Glacier is Sonamarg's primary attraction — and this trek is absolutely easy, doesn't need a guide, and the destination is genuinely stunning. 4km from the Sonamarg base (45–60 minute walk) or pony ride. Trail is clearly marked, mostly flat with slight elevation. Reach the glacier — white ice, rock debris, meltwater streams, and a 360° view of surrounding peaks. I went in September 2024 — there were 15 people in the whole place near the glacier, a family was having a picnic there, and a local boy was playing cricket by the side of the glacier. This normalcy in the middle of beauty — that's the version of Kashmir that doesn't appear in travel brochures.
Kashmir is home to India's most acclaimed handicraft tradition — pashmina shawls (knowing the difference between real and fake is essential), papier-mâché boxes and decorative pieces, walnut wood carvings, hand-knotted Kashmiri carpets, and sozni embroidery. Polo View Market (Srinagar's upmarket handicraft hub) and Lal Chowk (the central market, a mix of everything) are the best options.

Choose the base before you choose the hotel — on a multi-region trip the area you pick shapes your days more than an extra star on the hotel does.

Quick Answer — What Permit is Required for Kashmir? No special permit for Indian citizens — only a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Passport) is needed. ID is mandatory at every hotel check-in. For border areas and zones near the Line of Control (Gurez, Keran, Teetwal, Machil), an NOC/PAP from the local police is required — easiest to arrange through a registered tour operator. No paperwork for the main tourist circuit (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg).
Indian Citizens — Tourist Zones: Valid government photo ID only. Aadhaar Card, Passport, Driving License, Voter ID — any one. Carry original + photocopy.
Indian Citizens — Border Zones (Gurez, Keran, Teetwal, Machil): NOC from local police/DC office in Srinagar. Easiest to arrange through a registered tour operator.
Foreign Nationals — Tourist Zones: Passport + Valid India Visa. Mandatory registration at the FRO (Foreigners Registration Office), Bemina, Srinagar within 24 hours.
Foreign Nationals — Border Zones: Protected Area Permit (PAP). Through the District Commissioner's office, Srinagar or a registered tour operator.
Travel Insurance: Recommended (not mandatory). Important for medical emergencies in Himalayan regions.

Jammu Tawi Railway Station (connected to the rest of India) → Srinagar: 300km, Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH44). 8–10 hours. Route is BEAUTIFUL — Banihal tunnel, Jawahar Tunnel, Banihal pass. But road conditions are weather-dependent. January–March: the highway is sometimes blocked by snow/landslides. Private cab: ₹4,000–₹6,000. State JKRTC buses also available. Do the road route once for sure — the Ramban ghats, the view from Banihal, and entering the Kashmir Valley from Qazigund — that visual experience is something else. But for short trips (5–7 days) flights are better — saves time
The most practical for families and couples. Unlimited km, fuel included. Fix the taxi rate FIRST, whether the driver offers a package or quotes per km. ₹3,000–₹3,500 is reasonable for an Innova for the Srinagar–Gulmarg–back trip. Driver allowance is separate: ₹200–₹300/day — discuss this upfront too. In October 2022 I did a 5-day Innova package for ₹14,000 — Srinagar (2 days local), Gulmarg day trip, Pahalgam (1 day), Sonamarg day trip. All-in, without any negotiation on km
Srinagar → Pahalgam: ₹400–₹600/person. Budget option. Only morning departures. No fixed time
Cheapest. Doesn't connect every tourist spot. Time consuming
Dal Lake navigation and sightseeing. Fixed rate negotiation possible
Aru Valley, Betaab Valley exploration. Price negotiated upfront
City movement only
Vehicles from outside (Punjab, Delhi plates) are not allowed for sightseeing in Kashmir — it is a local Kashmir taxi union rule. Hire a local taxi/cab service as soon as you reach Srinagar. Self-drive is also technically restricted
Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.
No special permit for Indian citizens — only a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Passport, DL).
Book the Gondola ticket FIRST — once the trip is confirmed, the first step is to book the Gulmarg Gondola at etickets.jammukashmircablecar.com.
Saffron buying: Buy from reputable spice shops at Polo View Market or Lal Chowk. 1g of certified Kashmiri saffron costs ₹400–₹800.
Weather preparedness: The weather changes rapidly in Kashmir, especially in Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Pack layered clothing for every season.
Religious sites dress code: Jama Masjid, Makhdoom Sahib shrine, Hazratbal dargah — covered shoulders and below-knee clothing mandatory.
"Talk to a Kashmir travel expert today—Call now for a free consultation."
An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.
Year-round snow at Himalayan altitude in India and a 360° Himalayan view from a cable car — this combination is found only at Gulmarg.
Dal Lake houseboats are famous, Nigeen Lake houseboats are better value. The morning mist, chai on the deck, the sound of a shikara — this is the core memory of Kashmir that no hotel can give you.
Three gardens, four centuries of history, and a combined view of Dal Lake plus the Zabarwan Hills. Kashmir's most undervalued experience.
Kashmiri cuisine is UNESCO listed — Rogan Josh, Gushtaba, Yakhni together in one setting.
5:45 am — The floating vegetable market, mist, first light — this scene is worth every rupee for free DSLR photography. The sunset ride is famous, the sunrise ride is better.
A 4 km easy trail, a genuine glacier, and in September almost no tourists. Zero cost activity, maximum memory.
Off the mainstream circuit, almost no tourist density, the crystal clarity of the Doodh Ganga river, and horses freely grazing the meadow. This is the 'real Kashmir' moment.
Double the price in Delhi for the same quality. Buying genuine saffron here just makes sense. Buy from a spice shop, not from a shikara vendor.
The 1 Kashmir trip regret is 'we couldn't get a Gondola ticket.' Online-only system, book 15–20 days ahead in peak season. After reading this guide, do this first.
Vehicles with Punjab, Delhi, or other state number plates are not allowed for sightseeing in Kashmir — it is a local taxi union rule. Hire a local-union-approved vehicle right at the airport.
Don't buy anything from a floating vendor on a shikara on Dal Lake — quality is unverified, prices have a 3–5x tourist markup, and adulteration (fake saffron) is common.
Better moveUse Polo View Market or the Government Emporium.
July without an advance booking — At summer peak, people queue for 2–3 hours for the Gondola if they don't have an online ticket. And walk-up tickets often sell out anyway. Online booking = no queue, guaranteed slot.
4 days — Rushing Srinagar + Gulmarg + Pahalgam + Sonamarg into three days — you'll be in a taxi the whole time and won't actually enjoy anything. 7 days minimum. Depth over speed.
In Pahalgam, pony operators charge tourists 2–3x the rate without a prior agreement. Fix the rate first, get it in writing if possible, and only pay after the ride is complete.
March without a backup plan — The Jammu–Srinagar highway gets blocked by snow/ice in winter. If travelling in this period, use air travel or build alternate-day buffers into your itinerary.
August Amarnath Yatra — Chandanwari is 15km from Pahalgam and is the Amarnath Yatra base camp in July–August. The road is extremely congested during this period — 6,000–10,000 pilgrims daily. This traffic isn't worth it for a 'sightseeing' trip.

UNESCO Old Goa heritage precinct. Fontainhas Latin Quarter in Panjim. Dudhsagar Falls 310m. North Goa commercial + South Goa quiet. It is 44 countries with 24 official languages, 50 UNESCO-listed cities, and a train network that takes you from the Eiffel Tower to the Colosseum without a single flight. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed over 200 client itineraries across Europe and the most consistent feedback is that Europe delivers more than expected and less than brochure fears suggest. popularLondonVikas Rana is an Atravelq destination expert who visited London in March 2022 during early spring — daffodils in Hyde Park, the last cool grey days before shoulder-season prices lifted, and museums operating at their most accessible visitor density of the year. London layers 2,000 years of history — Roman walls, Tudor palaces, Victorian rail stations, and 21st-century glass towers — across 9 million people. It is the world's greatest free museum city, the most authentic Indian food outside Asia, and a theatre district unmatched anywhere on Earth.Explore guide
popularUSAThe United States is not one destination — it is a continent's worth of them, from the vertical energy of New York to the desert theatre of the Grand Canyon and the Pacific light of California. For Indian travellers it delivers the widest range of experiences a single visa unlocks: world cities, cinematic road trips, national parks, theme-park capitals, and some of the best Indian food outside India. Pick one coast per trip, and the 10-year B1/B2 visa turns a once-in-a-lifetime journey into a decade of returns.Explore guide

The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed hundreds of client itineraries through Britain — from London-only honeymooners to three-generation Scotland circuits — and the consistent surprise is how much of the UK's best experience costs nothing at all. No African country packs more contrasting landscapes, no wildlife destination comes closer to guaranteeing the lion-and-elephant combination, and no Indian traveller leaves without the specific awareness that Mahatma Gandhi's political life began in Durban in 1893 — on this soil.Explore guide

I am Anmol Verma, and after planning hundreds of Paris itineraries for Indian travellers, my core advice has never changed: Paris rewards the traveller who walks, wakes early and sits down often.Explore guide
