About Jordan

Jordan is one of the most historically layered and geographically diverse countries of its size: the Nabataean carved city of Petra (one of the 7 Wonders of the World), the Roman ruins of Jerash, the Dead Sea.

At a glance

Key Features of Jordan

  • Petra Siq at 6amThe 1.2km sandstone gorge narrowing to 3m before revealing the Treasury (Al-Khazneh, 40m tall) is the most dramatic architectural reveal in travel.
  • Wadi Rum overnightThe most Martian landscape on Earth (filming location for The Martian, Dune, and Lawrence of Arabia) with the Bedouin camp, the zarb underground-oven dinner, and the darkest sky in the Middle East.
  • Dead Sea floatThe 34.2% saline lake at -430m (the world's lowest point) makes it physically impossible to sink. The body position in the Dead Sea is horizontal, not vertical. The specific sensation has no equivalent anywhere else.
  • Jerash Roman City at 7 amThe most completely preserved Roman provincial city outside Italy (the Oval Plaza, the Cardo Maximus, the South Theatre) with 20 visitors at first entry vs 300 by 10 am.
Why visit

Why Visit Jordan

Jordan contains Petra — a Nabataean city carved entirely from rose-red sandstone, hidden in a canyon accessible only through a narrow 1.2km slot gorge. The Treasury, revealed at the end of the Siq, is one of the most dramatic singular moments in any heritage site globally. Wadi Rum's desert has been Mars in multiple Hollywood films. The Dead Sea at 430m below sea level is the lowest point on Earth. Jerash is among the most complete Roman provincial cities in the Middle East. Aqaba offers Red Sea diving. Jordan Pass covers visa + 40+ sites including Petra. Wadi Mujib — a red sandstone canyon descending to the Dead Sea — is the lowest canyon trail in the world, waded through waist-deep water between 100m walls, finishing at a natural pool above the Dead Sea shore. Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest nature reserve, descends from sandstone cliffs at 1,500m to the Wadi Araba desert at 50m — a 4,000 sq km gradient encompassing 700 plant species and 215 bird species. Best time: March–May and September–November. Avoid July–August heat.

Spring (March–May) · March–May

The finest Jordan window: 18–28°C, spring wildflowers across the country, all sites at their best, pre-summer pricing
What to expect

Wadi Rum is comfortable mid-day, Petra is comfortable all-day, no specific heat strategy required. April is the absolute peak — perfect temperature combined with wildflower bloom + Easter pilgrim activity at Mount Nebo and Madaba.

Summer (June–August) · June–August

30-42°C
What to expect

Maximum heat but Jordan is fully operational with the 6am+4pm strategy: enter Petra at 6am (gate opening), complete the Siq+Treasury+main trail by 11am, hotel rest 11am-3pm, return at 4pm for the afternoon light. Wadi Rum nights perfect (22°C). Dead Sea and Aqaba at their warmest and clearest. August: Anmol's visit month.

Autumn (September–November) · September–November

Cooling from 32°C to 15°C across the three months
What to expect

October is the finest Petra photography month — the autumn light on the rose-red stone gives the most warmly saturated Petra colours of the year. November: 15-25°C, few tourists, good value, comfortable all day at every site.

Winter (December–February) · December–February

5-15°C at Petra altitude, occasional snow (Petra in snow is the most dramatically atmospheric Petra image possible)
What to expect

Dead Sea still warm enough to float year-round. Lowest prices of the year. Some days cold at Petra altitude — pack layers. The off-peak Jordan: atmospheric, quiet, cheap, and Petra in snow is unique.

Petra Siq at 6 am — The Treasury Reveal

Gate opens at 6am. Arrive at the Visitor Centre by 5:50am. Walk the Siq immediately on entry. The specific moment in the Siq walk when the Treasury first appears: at approximately 50m from the gorge exit, the rock walls separate and the left side of the Treasury facade becomes visible as a narrow vertical band of rose-red stone. At 30m: the right column becomes visible. At the gorge exit: the full 40m facade. This reveal — the building appearing progressively as the gorge widens — is the single most effective piece of architectural drama in the ancient world. Walk slowly at 40m from the exit. Do not run forward. The gradual reveal is the experience.

Monastery (Ad Deir) at 7am — Before the August Heat

Day 2 of Petra. Begin the 850-step ascent to the Monastery at 7am (the steps in the morning cool — 32°C, the most comfortable August Monastery window). Monastery at 7:45am — 12 visitors. The viewpoint above the Monastery (10 more minutes of rough trail from the Monastery base — the trail upward from the left side of the Monastery face, marked by a small blue arrow): the view from the urn level of the Monastery down into the Wadi Araba and across to the Negev Mountains. This is the highest accessible viewpoint in the main Petra area.

Wadi Rum Overnight Camp — Zarb + Milky Way

Book the Wadi Rum overnight camp (jordanpass.jo gives a discount code for several operators, or book directly with the Wadi Rum Visitor Centre operators). The traditional Bedouin tent camp (the goat-hair tent, the camp mattress, the communal area with the Arabic tea and coffee, JOD 35-50/person including dinner and breakfast ≈ ₹4,095-₩5,850) gives the most authentic experience. The bubble dome (transparent dome tent, JOD 100-200/person) gives the Milky Way visible from the bed. The zarb dinner (underground oven — lamb and vegetables slow-cooked in buried oven, dinner at 8pm). The Milky Way at 11pm.

Dead Sea Float — Sunrise at -430m

Drive from Amman to the Dead Sea (45 minutes by taxi, JOD 20-30). Arrive at 6am for the sunrise float. The public beach (Dead Sea Panoramic Complex, JOD 15-20 entry including beach access and towels). The August Dead Sea: 35°C water, 36°C air. The float at sunrise — sun appearing over the Moab Mountains to the east, the Dead Sea surface in the orange pre-dawn light. The Dead Sea is shrinking by approximately 1m/year — the shoreline exposing salt crystal formations at the edges, the most photogenic Dead Sea detail.

Jerash — 9am, One Hour From Amman

JETT bus from Abdali Terminal Amman to Jerash (JOD 1.50, 45 minutes, first bus 7am). The Jordan Pass includes free Jerash entry. The specific Jerash sequence: Hadrian's Arch → Oval Plaza (unique elliptical Forum, 90m × 80m, 56 limestone columns) → Cardo Maximus (800m colonnaded street, wheel ruts from Roman cart traffic visible in basalt paving) → Temple of Zeus → South Theatre (3,000-seat, acoustics — clapping at stage produces specific resonance audible from top row) → North Theatre → Temple of Artemis (6 columns of original 12, acanthus leaf capitals).

Wadi Rum Jeep Tour — The Golden Hour Run

The late afternoon jeep tour (depart Wadi Rum Visitor Centre 4pm): the desert in the 4pm-sunset light — red sand turning orange-red as the sun angle drops, monoliths casting long shadows, the specific Wadi Rum light that Hollywood directors came here specifically to capture. The tour covers: Lawrence's Spring (rock inscription), Khazali Canyon (Nabataean and Thamudic inscriptions on canyon walls), sand dunes (red Wadi Rum sand, iron-rich Mars colour), Burdah Rock Bridge (natural arch 80m above desert floor), and sunset point.

Madaba Mosaic Map + Mount Nebo — Biblical Morning

Drive from Amman to Madaba (30 minutes, JOD 5-8 taxi). St. George's Church opens at 8am. The Madaba Mosaic Map (6th-century AD floor mosaic in St. George's Church) requires 20 minutes of careful reading — the map is oriented with east at the top (not north, as modern maps) and the labels are in Greek. The Jerusalem panel (centre of map, Cardo Maximus visible as main street, Church of the Holy Sepulchre visible) is the most specifically documented biblical topography — a 6th-century cartographic record that matches the archaeological record exactly.

Aqaba Snorkelling — The Coral From Shore

Taxi from Aqaba city to the King Hussein Marine Park South Beach (10 minutes, JOD 5). Snorkel equipment rental (JOD 5-8). The coral begins within 50m of the beach. The Aqaba reef has a specific characteristic that Maldives and Thailand reefs do not: the dead coral at the surface gives way to live coral at 3-5m depth. The surface entry (the swim from the beach through the dead coral section, approximately 30m) is the barrier most visitors miss — the live reef begins after the dead section. Keep swimming past the white coral at the surface. At 3m: the colour begins.

Petra by Night — Candlelit Siq

Petra by Night (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening programme — the Siq and Treasury lit by 1,500 candles, the path from the Siq entrance to the Treasury in total darkness except the candle lines, the Bedouin music and storytelling at the Treasury). JOD 17 per person (≈ ₹1,989). Not included in the Jordan Pass (purchased separately at the Petra Visitor Centre). 2 hours, departure 8:30pm. At 8:30pm in August: 26°C — the most comfortable outdoor temperature of the day. The 1,500 candles in the Siq: the complete opposite of the daylight Siq.

The Hashem Restaurant (Amman downtown, the most legendary local restaurant — foul, hummus, falafel, open 24 hours, frequented by King Abdullah II himself, the most equalising single restaurant in Jordan: the king and the taxi driver eat at the same plastic tables) serves the most specifically Amman street food at the most Amman price (JOD 1-2 for a full hummus + foul meal ≈ ₹117-₩234). The specific Hashem breakfast: warm hummus + foul (fava bean stew) + falafel + Arabic bread + sweet tea, JOD 1.50.

Jordan Travel Tips"

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money & Jordan Pass

    1 tip
Buy Jordan Pass BEFORE boarding at jordanpass.jo — the Explorer (USD 75 ≈ ₹6,225) saves approximately ₹10,000 vs paying visa + Petra separately. Must be purchased online before entering Jordan. 1 JOD = ₹117. Carry JOD 50–100 cash (≈ ₹5,850–₩11,700) for Petra tips, Wadi Rum camp, taxis, and local restaurants. Cards not accepted at Bedouin camps or small Petra area restaurants. JETT Bus Amman → Petra JOD 10–12 (≈ ₹1,170–₩1,404), 3-4 hours, from Abdali Bus Terminal — book the day before.
  • Transport & Logistics

    1 tip
Royal Jordanian (national carrier) is the most comfortable India-Amman option but often the most expensive. Air Arabia (via Sharjah, 5-6 hours total) gives the best price-reliability balance. Book 4-6 weeks ahead. Internal Jordan: JETT bus (Amman-Petra), shared taxi (any major route), or rental car (international driving licence accepted). Aqaba has a small international airport — Royal Jordanian operates the Aqaba-Amman 30-minute shuttle (JOD 40-60), significantly faster than the 4-hour drive.
  • August Heat Strategy

    1 tip
The 6am + 4pm strategy (outdoor activity in the morning cool and the late afternoon) is the August Jordan safety protocol, not just a comfort preference. Heat stroke at 40°C in Petra is a medical emergency. Carry 2L of water per person per outdoor session. Petra: enter 6am gate opening, complete by 11am, hotel rest 11am-3pm, return 4pm. Monastery: 7am ascent. Wadi Rum: night is fine (22°C) but daytime is 40°C+ — jeep tour at 4pm sunset is the comfortable window. Dead Sea: sunrise float 6am, then resort pool for the day.
  • Safety & Security

    1 tip
Jordan is consistently one of the safest countries in the Middle East. Tourist police at major sites, Jordan Tourism Board helpline active. The country has been specifically stable throughout regional conflicts. Wadi Rum medical access: nearest hospital is in Aqaba (1 hour) — travel insurance with emergency evacuation essential. Dead Sea eyes: water at 34% salinity causes intense eye pain on contact. Do not splash, do not rub eyes, do not let children put faces in water. Fresh water showers at every beach for immediate rinsing if eye contact occurs.
  • Cultural Etiquette

    1 tip
Jordan is a Muslim-majority country. Dress respectfully: cover shoulders and knees outside the Dead Sea and Aqaba beach areas. At Petra (hot): light long trousers and a loose shirt are both modest and practical. At mosques: full coverage. Accept Bedouin tea if offered (the sage tea, the cardamom tea, the 'Bedouin whiskey' sweet tea) — refusing is the cultural equivalent of refusing a handshake. Friday is the Islamic day of rest — government offices and some businesses close on Fridays. Tourist sites including Petra, Jerash, and Wadi Rum operate normally on Fridays.
  • Photography & Restrictions

    1 tip
Military installations, government buildings, and some border areas: no photography permitted. The Jordan-Israel crossing at the King Hussein/Allenby Bridge: no photography. The Aqaba port: no photography. All Petra sites: fully permitted including Petra by Night (the only Petra session that allows night photography — the 1,500 candles provide the only light, mobile phone night mode gives better results than flash which is prohibited).
  • Bargaining & Tipping

    1 tip
Haggling at Petra stalls (the Bedouin vendors inside Petra — scarves, jewellery, sand bottles): start at 30% of the opening price. The specific Petra vendor culture: the opening price is a greeting, not a quote. Tipping in Jordan: 10% at restaurants if service charge not included. Petra horse riders (the men with horses at the Visitor Centre entrance who provide the free ride from the entrance to the Siq mouth): JOD 5-10 tip expected. Wadi Rum camp guides: JOD 5-15 at the end of the stay. Sasak village-style ranger tips at Rinca-equivalent Jordan: not applicable but the principle applies — tip the local guides who depend on tourism income.
  • Scams & Pitfalls

    1 tip
The Jordan Pass must be purchased BEFORE entering Jordan — cannot be purchased on arrival. Unofficial Wadi Rum tour operators (who approach at the Visitor Centre car park or in Rum village) may offer lower prices but are not licensed and have no safety accountability. Book only at the official Visitor Centre counter or through your hotel. Petra horse riders may demand JOD 20-50 tips when JOD 5-10 is the correct rate — tip what you consider appropriate. Dead Sea cosmetics sold at resort gift shops carry 300-500% premium over Ahava and Dead Sea Premier products at Amman airport duty-free or pharmacies — buy cosmetics in Amman first.
  • Connectivity & SIM

    1 tip
Jordan has 4G coverage throughout the tourist circuit including most of Wadi Rum (the desert has surprisingly strong signal in the main visited areas, weaker at the deeper desert camps). Tourist SIM at Queen Alia International Airport (Zain or Orange): JOD 10-15 (≈ ₹1,170–₩1,755) for 30-day data + calling package. Hotel WiFi widely available in Amman, Petra, Aqaba, and Dead Sea resorts. Wadi Rum camps have variable WiFi — confirm before booking if essential.
  • Health & Medical

    1 tip
No specific vaccinations required for Jordan from India. Travel insurance with medical coverage essential — Jordan has good private clinic infrastructure in Amman and Aqaba but the Wadi Rum and Dead Sea areas have limited medical access. Petra Visitor Centre has a small first-aid station. Heat-related illness is the most likely August medical concern: hydrate aggressively, recognise early heat exhaustion symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness), seek air-conditioned shelter immediately if symptoms develop. Stomach issues from street food: less common than in some Middle East countries but Hashem Restaurant and well-frequented falafel stalls are generally safe.

The Single Most Important Jordan Decision: Buy the Jordan Pass Before You Board.

Option

Cost

What It Includes

Jordan Pass — Wanderer

USD 70 (≈ ₹5,810)

Visa fee waiver + 1-day Petra entry (normally JOD 50 ≈ ₹5,850) + 40+ other sites

Jordan Pass — Explorer

USD 75 (≈ ₹6,225)

Visa fee waiver + 2-day Petra + 40+ sites

Jordan Pass — Expert

USD 80 (≈ ₹6,640)

Visa fee waiver + 3-day Petra + 40+ sites

Visa on Arrival (no Jordan Pass)

JOD 40 visa (≈ ₹4,680) + JOD 50/day Petra entry (≈ ₹5,850)

No pass benefits

The Math: Visa on Arrival (JOD 40 ≈ ₹4,680) + Petra 2-day entry (JOD 100 ≈ ₹11,700) = ₹16,380. Jordan Pass Explorer (USD 75 ≈ ₹6,225) includes visa, 2 days in Petra, Jerash, Ajloun, and more. Saving: approximately ₹10,155.

Conditions: Buy at jordanpass.jo BEFORE entering Jordan. Must stay a minimum of 3 nights in Jordan (within any 2-week period) to qualify for visa fee waiver.

Honest review

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Jordan — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Jordan Pass (3-day)

    Visa + Petra 2-day + 40+ attractions. Non-negotiable purchase before arrival.

  • Petra minimum 2 nights in Wadi Musa

Day 1: Treasury at dawn, Monastery by 9 am. One day gives Petra superficially.

  • Wadi Rum overnight Bedouin camp (traditional)

Open fire, Milky Way, most specifically Jordanian single night.

  • Petra by Night

1,500 candles, Siq + Treasury. 3 nights/week. ₹1,500. Most atmospheric heritage experience in the Middle East.

  • * Dana Biosphere Feynan Ecolodge

National Geographic top 25 eco-lodge. Candle-lit, solar-powered, most isolated Jordan landscape.

  • Jerash South Theatre acoustics (included in Jordan Pass). The specific 1,900-year-old Roman acoustic design still functioning. One clap from the stage: the resonance audible from the top row 2 seconds later. Free with Jordan Pass.

  • Aqaba King Hussein Marine Park snorkelling from shore (JOD 5

8 mask rental ≈ ₹585–₩936). The northernmost coral reef accessible from shore globally. Live coral at 3-5m depth, August water 28-30°C, 20-30m visibility.

  • Not buying the Jordan Pass before flying. The Jordan Pass must be purchased before entering Jordan. Purchasing on arrival is not possible — the visa fee is charged at immigration and cannot be retroactively waived. The single most expensive Jordan mistake available.

  • Petra at 10 am in August. The main valley at 10am in August is 35-38°C with no shade. The Treasury is in shade by 10am but the Royal Tombs road and Colonnaded Street are fully exposed. Enter at 6am, shaded sections from 9am, hotel by 11am.

  • Wadi Rum without staying overnight. The day trip gives the landscape and sunset. The overnight gives the Milky Way, zarb dinner, desert dawn. For a 7-day Jordan circuit, cutting the overnight to save one day is the wrong optimisation.

  • The Dead Sea without the black mud. The Dead Sea float is the standard experience. The black mud (free from the shoreline, applied to skin, dried 15 minutes, rinsed) gives the mineral-rich treatment that spas charge JOD 50+ for as a 'mud body wrap.'

  • Skipping the Monastery for a second Treasury visit. Many visitors spend both Jordan Pass days photographing the Treasury. The Monastery is larger, higher, has fewer visitors. The 850 steps are the barrier. The 7am August departure makes them manageable.

  • Jerash vs Petra priority confusion. Some itineraries suggest Jerash is optional. Jerash is the finest Roman provincial city outside Italy. Free with Jordan Pass. A full day at Jerash is non-optional in any Jordan circuit of 6+ days.

  • Aqaba snorkelling only at the hotel beach. The King Hussein Marine Park South Beach (10 min taxi) has the living coral. Hotel beaches near the city centre have largely dead or degraded coral.

Better moveTake the taxi. Live reef worth the JOD 5.

  • August Petra without the 6am + 4pm strategy. The 6-hour midday window (10am-4pm) in August Petra is genuinely unsafe for extended outdoor walking (38-40°C, no shade). The 6am-10am + 4pm-6pm strategy gives 6 productive hours.

  • Believing the Petra horse ride is free without tipping. The horse ride from the Visitor Centre to the Siq mouth is advertised as complimentary with the Jordan Pass. Riders expect JOD 5-10 tip. Some demand JOD 20-50. Tip what you consider appropriate.

  • Buying Dead Sea cosmetics at resort gift shops. Dead Sea mud and mineral cosmetics at resort shops carry 300-500% premium over identical Ahava and Dead Sea Premier products at Amman airport duty-free or city pharmacies.

    Better moveBuy in Amman first.

Frequently asked questions

Jordan FAQ

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Jordan.

Yes, but the Jordan Pass (jordanpass.jo, USD 70–80 ≈ ₹5,810–₩6,640) includes the visa fee waiver for stays of 3+ nights. Without the Jordan Pass: Visa on Arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, JOD 40 (≈ ₹4,680). The Jordan Pass Explorer (USD 75) also includes 2-day Petra entry (normally JOD 100) — the total saving is approximately ₹10,000 for visitors spending 3+ nights and visiting Petra. Must be purchased BEFORE entering Jordan (before the first passport stamp at Queen Alia International Airport).
Budget: ₹80,000–₩1,20,000/person (flights included). Mid-range: ₹1,40,000–₩2,20,000. Flights India → Amman return: ₹28,000–₩65,000. Jordan Pass: ₹6,225 (save ₹10,000 vs paying separately). Daily ground: Budget ₹3,000–₩6,000 · Mid ₹8,000–₩15,000. The Wadi Rum overnight Bedouin camp (₹4,095–₩5,850 traditional tent / ₹11,700–₩23,400 bubble dome) is the largest single ground expense after Petra.
March–May: the finest Petra weather (18–28°C, no heat strategy needed, all-day comfortable). October: the finest Petra photography (autumn light on rose-red stone). August: manageable with 6am entry + 4pm return — the Treasury at 6:30am in the morning light is the most specifically golden Petra moment of any season. Avoid noon in any season (the Siq is hot and the main valley fully exposed). January-February: occasional snow at Petra (5-12°C) — the most dramatically atmospheric Petra image possible.
Yes — almost always. The Explorer Pass (USD 75 ≈ ₹6,225) includes: Jordan visa fee (JOD 40 ≈ ₹4,680 value) + Petra 2-day entry (JOD 100 ≈ ₹11,700 value) + Jerash + Ajloun + Kerak + 40+ sites. Total value: ₹16,380+. Pass cost: ₹6,225. Saving: ₹10,155+. For any visitor spending 3+ nights and visiting Petra, the Jordan Pass is financially non-negotiable. Buy at jordanpass.jo BEFORE entering Jordan — cannot be purchased after first passport stamp.
The 6am + 4pm strategy: enter at 6am (gate opens exactly at 6am, the Siq in shadow, 28°C). Complete the Siq + Treasury + main trail by 11am. Return to the hotel 11am–3pm. Return to Petra at 4pm for the afternoon golden light on the Royal Tombs (4pm-6pm). The Monastery: 7am start, complete by 10am. Carry 2L of water per person per session. The midday window (10am-4pm) in August Petra is 38-40°C with no shade in the main valley — genuinely unsafe for extended outdoor walking.
Yes — the Wadi Rum Bedouin camp overnight gives the zarb dinner (the underground oven meal), the Milky Way from the desert floor at 11pm (360° sky, the galactic core distinguishable), and the desert at dawn. The day-trip Wadi Rum (jeep tour only) gives the landscape but not the night. For a 7-day Jordan circuit, the Wadi Rum overnight is the most specifically unreplicable night in the Middle East. Traditional tent JOD 35-50/person (≈ ₹4,095–₩5,850) including dinner + breakfast. Bubble dome JOD 100-200/person.
The Dead Sea (-430m, the lowest point on Earth, 34% salinity) gives automatic buoyancy (no swimming required — the body floats without effort, sinking is physically impossible), the Dead Sea black mineral mud (apply, dry 15 minutes, rinse — the same treatment the resort spas sell for JOD 50+ available free from the shoreline), and the Dead Sea sunrise. Water temperature: 35-40°C in August. Available year-round. The most specific single physical experience in Jordan. Do NOT get water in eyes — intense pain, fresh water showers at every beach for rinsing.
5 days: Petra (2 days) + Wadi Rum overnight + Dead Sea (minimum). 8 days: Anmol's complete August 2024 circuit with Jerash, Madaba, Mount Nebo, and Aqaba — covers all Jordan UNESCO sites and Red Sea snorkelling. 12 days: deep Jordan with Dana Nature Reserve, Crusader Castles (Kerak + Ajloun), and the Baptism Site. Minimum meaningful Jordan: 5 days. Recommended Jordan: 8 days (the Anmol circuit).
