About Thailand

Thailand is a 513,120 sq km kingdom in the heart of Southeast Asia — Bangkok (10 million people, the world's most visited city for a decade), the ancient capital of Ayutthaya (UNESCO ruins), the northern cultural capital of Chiang Mai, and 3,219km of coastline on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea that contains some of the finest beach islands in Asia.

This Thailand travel guide is the version we wish more first-time visitors would read before booking. It explains exactly when to visit, how the 60-day visa-free entry works in 2026, where to base yourself, what a 7-day trip actually buys you, and the practical knowledge that quietly separates respectful travellers from those who learn the hard way.

At a glance

Key Features of Thailand

  • Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho, BangkokThe most sacred Buddhist site in Thailand (the Emerald Buddha) and the 46m Reclining Buddha are 10 minutes apart on foot. At 8am: accessible and quiet. At 11am: the tour group surge.
  • Maya Bay, Phi PhiThe bay that defined a generation of Southeast Asia travel photography now has a daily visitor quota and a restored coral reef. The first long-tail from Ao Nang at 6am gives the bay before the quota fills.
  • Elephant Nature Park, Chiang MaiEthical elephant rescue sanctuary where the entire day is spent in direct contact with animals retired from logging and tourism. No riding, no performances — just elephants doing elephant things at close range.
  • Wat Rong Khun, Chiang RaiThe White Temple is the most architecturally extraordinary Buddhist temple built in the last 100 years. The all-white exterior with mirror mosaic and the contemporary mural inside are unlike anything else in Thailand.
Why visit

Why Visit Thailand

Thailand received 28 million international visitors in 2023, making it the most visited country in Southeast Asia — a position earned by the combination of cultural heritage, natural geography, infrastructure quality, and the most developed tourism ecosystem in the region. The country has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the historic cities of Ayutthaya (14th-17th-century Siamese capital) and Sukhothai (13th-century origin of the Thai kingdom), and the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai forest complex.

Bangkok operates as Southeast Asia's most functional major city for international visitors: the BTS Skytrain and MRT metro system connect the major districts efficiently, the Suvarnabhumi Airport serves 60+ international airlines, and the street food ecosystem — recognised by UNESCO as part of intangible cultural heritage — provides the world's most sophisticated hawker food culture at the lowest accessible price point. The Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the most sacred Buddhist site in Thailand) and the Grand Palace represent the most ornately decorated single compound in Southeast Asian Buddhist heritage.

Cool dry season · November–February

* Temperatures in Chiang Mai are comfortable during the day, 28–32°C, and drop to 18–22°C at night
What to expect

Beaches across both coasts are calm and clear. * Loy Krathong (November full moon) — the entire country sets candle-lit baskets afloat on rivers. Magical in Chiang Mai (paired with the Yi Peng lantern festival).

Hot season · March–May

* Bangkok can reach 40°C with 80% humidity in April
What to expect

Songkran (the Thai New Year water festival, 13–15 April) is genuinely unique but logistically chaotic. * Songkran (13–15 April) — a three-day water fight across the country. Don’t bring electronics outside; embrace it or avoid it.

Monsoon (Andaman coast) · June–October

What to expect

Most days bring 1–3 hour afternoon downpours followed by sunshine.

Conditions
  • It isn’t the all-day-rain stereotype

Chinese New Year · January - February

Conditions
  • Bangkok’s Yaowarat (Chinatown) fills with firecrackers and dragon dances

The City That Never Stops

First-timersMid-range stays

Bangkok is the world's most visited city — simultaneously a city of 400-year-old temples and 57-floor rooftop bars, canal boats and BTS Skytrain, street food carts and Michelin-starred restaurants. Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha + Grand Palace — the most significant royal and religious site in Thailand), Wat Pho (the 46m reclining Buddha, the oldest temple in Bangkok, founded 1788), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn — best photographed from the river at sunrise, best visited in the afternoon for the internal mosaics), Chatuchak Weekend Market (Saturday-Sunday, 8,000 stalls — the largest weekend market in the world), and the Chao Phraya River express boat.

Northern Soul of Thailand

A 700-year-old walled city in the northern hills with a different temperature, vegetation, and pace than the rest of Thailand. Over 300 Buddhist temples within the old city walls.

Railay Beach, Krabi

Railay Beach, Krabi

The Most Beautiful Beach in Thailand

Railay Beach (accessible only by longtail from Ao Nang or Krabi Town — no road access through the limestone cliffs) has four beaches: Railay West (sunset, calm swimming), Railay East (mangrove, longtail pier), Phra Nang Cave Beach (the finest, with the cave shrine and the coral directly below the cliffs), and Tonsai (climbers' beach — the roughest approach but the finest rock climbing in Thailand). February: ideal sea conditions, warmest water of the season, coral snorkelling excellent.

Phuket

HoneymoonLuxury stays
  • Thailand's largest island, with full international airport access and a polarised reputation.

  • Patong Beach is the cheap-and-loud one most first-timers expect.

Basing in Patong "to be central." It's the loudest, most touristy stretch on the island; Surin or Kamala give you the same coast 20 minutes away with half the noise.

Koh Phi Phi + Maya Bay

Koh Phi Phi + Maya Bay

Koh Phi Phi (Phi Phi Islands, 40km southwest of Krabi) comprises two islands: Phi Phi Don (inhabited — the party island with beach bungalows, bars, and dive shops) and Phi Phi Leh (uninhabited national park — Maya Bay, Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon). Maya Bay closed in 2018 to allow coral recovery, reopened in 2022 with restricted access (daily visitor limit). February: peak clarity, best visibility, coral in good condition.

Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya

Ancient Capital at Sunset

Ayutthaya (UNESCO World Heritage, 80km from Bangkok) was the Siamese capital for 417 years (1350–1767) and home to a million people at its peak — the Burmese army destroyed it in 1767, and the ruins remain as they fell. The most significant sites: Wat Phra Si Sanphet (the three chedi of the royal temple, the most photographed ruins), Wat Mahathat (the Buddha head in the tree roots), Wat Chaiwatthanaram (the riverside ruins at sunset, the most atmospheric in the Ayutthaya complex), and Wat Ratchaburana (underground crypt with original murals).

Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai

White Temple + Golden Triangle

Chiang Rai (3 hours north of Chiang Mai) is a day trip destination anchored by Wat Rong Khun (White Temple, contemporary Buddhist temple designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat — privately owned, under continuous construction since 1997), Baan Dam Museum (Black House — the dark complement to the White Temple, sculptor Thawan Duchanee's lifetime collection of dark art in 40 black buildings), and the Golden Triangle (Doi Sao — where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet at the Mekong River, free to visit, 60km from Chiang Rai).

Pai

Pai

The Mountain Town

Pai (1,800m altitude, 140km from Chiang Mai, 3 hours by minibus through 762 curves) is a small town (population 3,000) in the Mae Hong Son province mountains — more popular than it should be, more charming than it gets credit for. The Walking Street night market (daily from 6 pm — Thai food, hill tribe crafts, live music), the Pai Canyon sunset (free, 2km from town), the hot springs and the surrounding waterfall + rice field scenery make Pai the most relaxing 2–3 nights in northern Thailand.

Phuket + Koh Samui

Phuket + Koh Samui

The Beach Resorts

Phuket (Thailand's largest island, connected to mainland by bridge) is the country's most developed beach resort — Patong Beach (the main beach, energetic, very touristy), Kata and Karon Beaches (quieter, family-friendly), the Big Buddha (45m white marble, visible from across southern Phuket, free entry), and Phang Nga Bay day trip (the essential Phuket excursion). Koh Samui (Gulf of Thailand, accessible by ferry from Surat Thani or domestic flight) is the Gulf coast alternative — less dramatic than Krabi but excellent in July–September when the Andaman coast has its monsoon.

    Wat Arun Sunrise — Bangkok

Stand on the Chao Phraya River bank opposite Wat Arun at 6:15 am — the Temple of Dawn's golden spires in the first light. Free from the riverbank (Maharaj Pier side). The entry to cross the river and enter the temple itself is worth adding, but the river view from the exterior at sunrise is the specific Wat Arun experience.

Pad Thai from a Street Cart

The finest Pad Thai in Thailand is not in a restaurant — it is from the wok of a street cart at 11 pm, eaten on a plastic stool on the pavement. Ingredients: rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, spring onion, tamarind sauce, fish sauce, and crushed peanuts — cooked fresh in a screaming hot wok in 90 seconds. The Chatuchak area, Silom, and Khao San Road all have excellent street cart Pad Thai.

    Thai Massage

Traditional Thai massage (nuad phaen thai) — not oil massage, but a dry technique using rhythmic pressing, stretching, and yoga-like positions to release muscle tension. 1 hour: 200–300 THB at a local massage shop vs. 600–1,500 THB at a hotel spa. The technique involves the therapist using thumbs, palms, elbows, and feet along energy lines (sen)—more active and physically engaging than oil massage. Available on every second street in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and all beach towns.

Thailand Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    2 tips
    • Select "charge in Thai Baht" when asked by ATMs or card terminals whether to charge in THB or your home currency — dynamic currency conversion to INR at these terminals carries a 3–5% markup; always choose local currency.

    • Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and MRT metro cover all major tourist areas — a Rabbit Card (BTS) or MRT stored-value card saves time and is cheaper than buying individual tickets; rechargeable at any station.

  • Safety

    2 tips
    • Lèse-majesté law is strictly enforced — any criticism of the Thai monarchy in public, on social media, or even in private conversations overheard by locals can result in criminal prosecution with sentences of 3–15 years; this applies to foreign tourists.

    • Do not purchase, use, or photograph illegal drugs in Thailand — despite popular reputation, drug enforcement is severe; trafficking carries the death penalty and possession of recreational drugs results in mandatory prison sentences.

  • Etiquette

    2 tips
    • Never touch a Thai person's head — the head is considered the most sacred part of the body in Thai culture; even gently touching a child's head is deeply offensive.

    • Remove shoes when entering homes, small temples, and many traditional restaurants — if shoes are outside the door, yours should join them automatically.

  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
    • Tuk-tuk detour scam in Bangkok — a friendly tuk-tuk driver offers to take you on a "city tour" for THB 20 and stops at multiple gem or tailor shops where he earns commission; the tour never reaches the destination you requested.

    • Grand Palace "closed today" scam — a helpful local near Sanam Luang tells you the Grand Palace is closed for a Buddhist holiday and offers to take you to a "special temple" instead; the Grand Palace is almost never completely closed.

    • Jet ski damage scam in Phuket and Pattaya — operators claim you damaged the jet ski after use and demand THB 20,000–50,000; photograph the jet ski thoroughly before and after use and involve tourist police if disputed.

Frequently asked questions

Thailand FAQ

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Thailand.

10 to 14 days is the sweet spot for a first trip — enough to commit to Bangkok plus one or two regions without losing days to domestic flights. Seven days' work if you stay in Bangkok with one beach or northern stop. Three days work as a stopover or layover. Anything under five days isn’t worth the long flight for travellers from outside Asia.
Yes — Thailand has hosted international travellers for 50+ years, and the tourism infrastructure is mature. Petty scams (tuk-tuk redirects, gem schemes, jet-ski damage claims) are the most common issues, easily avoidable with vigilance. The real risks are motorbike accidents (don’t ride if you don’t ride at home), the heat in April, and rough seas during monsoon. Travel insurance is non-negotiable.
January is the best month overall — cool dry season at peak, calm seas on both coasts, full tour schedules. November offers similar weather with smaller crowds and lower prices. Avoid April for the extreme heat (and Songkran chaos if you’re not festival-going), and avoid September for Andaman beach trips entirely — the monsoon dumps heavy rain.
A 7-day trip costs roughly USD 250–400 per person on a budget, USD 600–900 mid-range, and USD 1,500+ for luxury, excluding international flights. Daily costs run USD 30 budget to USD 250+ luxury per person. Region (resort versus inland), season, and accommodation tier are the three biggest cost variables.
All three work, but in different regions. Honeymooners base in Phuket (Surin or Kamala pool villas) or Krabi’s Railay (Rayavadee). Families do best on Phuket’s family-resort west coast or Koh Samui’s calmer Bophut. Solo travellers and digital nomads gravitate to Chiang Mai’s Nimman district or Koh Phangan’s quieter beaches.
Book Phuket, Koh Samui, and Krabi resorts 2–3 months ahead for December–February peak. Reserve domestic flights 4–8 weeks ahead for budget fares. Book sleeper trains 2–3 weeks ahead. Yi Peng (Chiang Mai’s lantern festival in November) sells out 6+ months ahead. Bangkok hotels can be booked the same week. Don’t forget the TDAC submission within 72 hours before arrival.
Trying to fit too many regions into too few days. We watch first-timers stack Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, and Koh Samui into 10 days and end up exhausted from domestic flights and ferries. The single change that improves trips most is committing to two regions and staying longer in each. Thailand rewards depth, not breadth.
Almost never a car for first trips — traffic is challenging, and parking is rare. Motorbikes are the local default in Chiang Mai, Pai, Koh Samui, and Koh Phangan, but only rent one if you ride at home. Motorbike accidents are the leading cause of tourist injury, and hospital bills run high. International Driving Permits are technically required.

It is 44 countries with 24 official languages, 50 UNESCO-listed cities, and a train network that takes you from the Eiffel Tower to the Colosseum without a single flight. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed over 200 client itineraries across Europe and the most consistent feedback is that Europe delivers more than expected and less than brochure fears suggest. For Indian travellers, ONE Schengen visa opens 27 countries. This guide covers every visa step, every exchange rate, and every planning decision.Explore guideExperience Regal London: Big Ben, Royal Palaces & Custom GetawayspopularLondonVikas Rana is an Atravelq destination expert who visited London in March 2022 during early spring — daffodils in Hyde Park, the last cool grey days before shoulder-season prices lifted, and museums operating at their most accessible visitor density of the year. London layers 2,000 years of history — Roman walls, Tudor palaces, Victorian rail stations, and 21st-century glass towers — across 9 million people. It is the world's greatest free museum city, the most authentic Indian food outside Asia, and a theatre district unmatched anywhere on Earth.Explore guideExplore Iconic USA: New York Skylines, Canyons & Custom HolidayspopularUSAThe United States is not one destination — it is a continent's worth of them, from the vertical energy of New York to the desert theatre of the Grand Canyon and the Pacific light of California. For Indian travellers it delivers the widest range of experiences a single visa unlocks: world cities, cinematic road trips, national parks, theme-park capitals, and some of the best Indian food outside India. Pick one coast per trip, and the 10-year B1/B2 visa turns a once-in-a-lifetime journey into a decade of returns.Explore guideUnited KingdompopularUnited KingdomThe United Kingdom packs four nations, 33 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the world's greatest concentration of free museums, and a 1,000-year royal heritage into an island smaller than Madhya Pradesh. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed hundreds of client itineraries through Britain — from London-only honeymooners to three-generation Scotland circuits — and the consistent surprise is how much of the UK's best experience costs nothing at all. English everywhere, the largest Indian diaspora in Europe, and a rail network that connects London to Edinburgh faster than Delhi to Jaipur.Explore guideExperience Wild South Africa: Kruger Big Five & Custom SafarisnewSouth AfricaSouth Africa is where a single trip delivers the Big Five safari, a UNESCO-listed wine valley, one of the world's greatest coastal drives, a beach city under a flat-topped mountain, and a Soweto township history that changed the course of 20th-century politics. No African country packs more contrasting landscapes, no wildlife destination comes closer to guaranteeing the lion-and-elephant combination, and no Indian traveller leaves without the specific awareness that Mahatma Gandhi's political life began in Durban in 1893 — on this soil.Explore guideExplore Historic Great Britain: London, Scottish Highlands & Tailored TripspopularGreat BritainGreat Britain packs a startling amount into one compact island — the world-city buzz of London, the castles and lochs of Scotland, the storybook villages of the Cotswolds, and the peaks of Wales, all linked by one of the planet's best rail networks. For Indian travellers it's uniquely easy: everyone speaks English, they drive on the left just like home, and the food scene runs from Michelin stars to the best Indian restaurants outside India. For Indian travellers it is a genuine bucket-list journey: far to reach, but astonishing in reward, and surprisingly accessible if you already hold a US, UK, or Schengen visa. Give yourself time to acclimatise to the Andes, plan around the dry season, and Peru delivers history, adventure, and flavour on a scale few countries can match.Explore guideUnveil Ancient Egypt: Pyramids of Giza, Nile Cruises & Bespoke ToursnewEgyptEgypt is the only destination on Earth where you stand at 6am in front of a 4,500-year-old monument built by 100,000 workers over 20 years — and then drive 600km south to find 63 underground royal tombs, a temple complex larger than Vatican City, and a river that has sustained civilisation longer than any other geographic feature in human history. The e-Visa takes 3-5 days. The Pyramids have been waiting 4,500 years.Explore guideDiscover Classic Central Europe: Prague, Vienna, Budapest & Custom TourstrendingCentral EuropeCentral Europe is where the continent keeps its best-value secrets — imperial capitals, medieval old towns, thermal baths, alpine lakes and the Adriatic coast, all inside one Schengen visa and at a fraction of Western Europe's daily costs. Six countries — Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Poland — one visa, one connected rail network, and this guide covers every planning decision in between.Explore guideExperience Romantic Paris: Seine Cruises, Art & Tailored City BreakshoneymoonParisParis is the most visited city on Earth and the most misunderstood — travellers arrive for the Eiffel Tower and leave having discovered that the real city lives in its morning bakeries, its riverbanks at dusk and its neighbourhood squares. I am Anmol Verma, and after planning hundreds of Paris itineraries for Indian travellers, my core advice has never changed: Paris rewards the traveller who walks, wakes early and sits down often.Explore guide
