About Sikkim

Sikkim became part of India in 1975 after a referendum that ended the Chogyal monarchy. The state borders Nepal to the west, Tibet (China) to the north and east, Bhutan to the east, and West Bengal to the south. Four districts: East (Gangtok capital), North (most remote, most dramatic — Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen and Lachung valleys), West (Pelling, Yuksom, Kangchenjunga views, Goecha La trek base), and South (Namchi, Ravangla).

Why visit

Why Visit Sikkim

Sikkim is India's smallest state and its most ecologically extraordinary — sharing borders with Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, with Kangchenjunga (8,586m, world's third-highest peak) dominating the western horizon. The state is India's only fully organic-certified region since 2016. Rumtek Monastery is the seat-in-exile of the Karmapa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Gurudongmar Lake at 5,430m is one of the highest accessible lakes in the world. The Zuluk Zigzag road ascends 32 hairpins to the Silk Road plateau above 4,000m. Yumthang Valley's rhododendron bloom in April covers the valley in red, pink, and white. No passport needed. Fly to Bagdogra, then drive. Permit required for restricted zones. The Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim blooms across 100+ species in April — the most densely flowering high-altitude rhododendron forest accessible by road anywhere in India. Best time: March–May and September–November.

Gurudongmar Lake — 9 am Arrival After 4:30am Convoy

Depart Lachen at 4:30am (tourist vehicle convoy system — all vehicles must depart together at 4:30am to ensure a 9am arrival and a return by 1pm to avoid altitude sickness at 5,183m). The 5-hour drive: ascent from Lachen (2,750m) to the lake (5,183m) through altitude zones. At Thangu, brief stop; warm tea at army canteen. Final 2 hours on military road above 4,000m, landscape transitioning from juniper scrub to high-altitude plateau (above 4,500m: no vegetation, pure rock and frozen soil). Book a Sumo from Gangtok for a Nathula + Tsomgo Lake day trip. Permits arranged by the Sumo driver or through the Gangtok tourist association at the SNT stand. The Rabdentse Ruins (2nd capital of Sikkim, on ridge below Pemayangste — ruins of Chogyal palace, 4 chortens visible on ridgeline, view of Kangchenjunga massif from ridge on clear days). Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (Deorali, 3km from Gangtok MG Marg, ₹20 entry) is the most important centre for study of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet — library has over 60,000 manuscripts (largest collection of Tibetan manuscripts in India), museum has ritual objects (kapala skull cups, dorje thunderbolts, ceremonial butter sculptures), thangka collection, specific atmosphere of serious academic institution in mountain capital. Institute has research library where visitors can see (not touch) actual 800-year-old Tibetan manuscripts — specific handwritten Tibetan Buddhist texts produced in Ladakh, Bhutan, Tibet before printing press. Most specific object: complete set of Kangyur (108-volume Tibetan Buddhist canon, complete words of Buddha in Tibetan translation) bound in yellow silk.

Sikkim Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Permits & Documentation

    1 tip
No ILP for Indian nationals — Aadhaar/Voter ID sufficient for main Sikkim areas. Special permits: North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Zero Point, Gurudongmar — FREE, organise day before departure through tour operator ₹300-500 service charge, or DC office Gangtok). Nathula Pass (₹200, from SNT Bus Stand Gangtok, open Thursday-Sunday typically). North Sikkim permit checked at Mangan checkpoint 65km from Gangtok — vehicles without correct permit turned back. Foreigners need PAP for entire Sikkim.
  • Money & Cash

    1 tip
Withdraw all required cash in Gangtok before North Sikkim journey. Only reliable ATMs are in Gangtok. Lachung has one ATM frequently not operational. Lachen has none. Carry ₹6,000-8,000/person for North Sikkim 3-night circuit (accommodation ₹800-1,500/night, food ₹200-400/day, local Sumo ₹300-500/day). May pricing 10-20% cheaper than March-April peak rhododendron season. Government Emporium MG Marg has organic Sikkim cardamom + tea + honey at source prices significantly below Delhi organic market.
  • Altitude Acclimatisation

    1 tip
The most dangerous Sikkim mistake: not acclimatising before Gurudongmar (5,183m). Standard acclimatisation: 2 nights Gangtok (1,650m) + 1 night Lachen (2,750m) before the 5,183m lake. HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) at 5,183m is life-threatening. Symptoms requiring immediate descent: severe headache, nausea, shortness of breath at rest, confusion, loss of coordination. Consult a doctor about Diamox before trip. Drink water aggressively, eat lightly, walk slowly at altitude. Do NOT run or exert at 5,183m. Travel insurance with medical evacuation essential.
  • Network & Connectivity

    1 tip
Airtel and Jio: coverage in Gangtok and major towns. North Sikkim: BSNL ONLY at Lachung, very limited/no signal near Gurudongmar. Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google offline maps for North Sikkim) before departure. Hotel WiFi available in Gangtok and Pelling. North Sikkim hotels: WiFi limited or non-existent. Carry BSNL SIM for North Sikkim if essential connectivity needed. Standard Indian carriers work normally in Gangtok and East/West Sikkim.
  • Mountain Road Safety

    1 tip
North Sikkim roads maintained by Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Drive only in daylight. Military convoy system (vehicles travel together on Gurudongmar road) enforced for safety — follow convoy rules. The 4:30am Lachen departure for Gurudongmar is army-enforced — non-negotiable. Monsoon risk (June-September): North Sikkim particularly prone to landslides — multiple tourists historically stranded 2-5 days in Lachung/Lachen due to road blockages. If visiting in monsoon: plan flexibility in return dates, carry extra cash and food.
  • Plastic Ban (Important)

    1 tip
Sikkim is India's first state to ban single-use plastic bags (2016 order). Carrying single-use plastic bags can result in fines at checkpoints and markets. Carry reusable cloth bags from home — state is specifically serious about plastic enforcement in market and national park areas. Plastic water bottles allowed (no specific ban) but consider refillable bottles. The plastic policy is part of Sikkim's broader organic + environmental positioning — respect it.
  • Monastery Etiquette

    1 tip
At all Buddhist stupas, mani walls, and chortens: walk clockwise. This applies at Rumtek, Pemayangste, Enchey, and every monastery and stupa in Sikkim. Remove shoes at all monastery prayer halls and before entering main sanctum. Many Sikkimese monasteries also request shoes off in outer courtyard. Photography permitted in monastery courtyards and exteriors. Inside prayer halls during active prayer: photography NOT permitted at Rumtek and Pemayangste main halls. Speak quietly. Do not touch ritual objects or thangkas. Tip the resident monk who shows the upper hall at Pemayangste (Zangdopelri model) — ₹50-100 customary.
  • Photography Restrictions

    1 tip
Nathula Pass: photography from viewing platform permitted. Photography of soldiers (Indian OR Chinese) NOT permitted. Photography of military equipment NOT permitted. Chinese gate cannot be photographed at close range. Follow ITBP soldier's instructions strictly. Gurudongmar Lake: photography permitted at lake. Do not disturb prayer offerings or puja materials at lake edge. Do not throw any items into the sacred lake. Monastery interiors: confirm with monk before photographing — some allow exterior only. Military convoy areas: no photography of military vehicles or installations.
  • Cultural Etiquette

    1 tip
Gurudongmar Lake is actively sacred — local Buddhist and Hindu communities perform puja at lake edge. Do not disturb any offerings or prayer materials. Do not throw any items into the lake. Tongba culture: if offered Tongba (millet beer) in Sikkimese home or restaurant, correct drinking method is through bamboo straw, hot water refilled by host as drink is consumed. Refusing Tongba offer in Sikkimese home is equivalent of refusing tea — mildly impolite. Sikkim is the most diverse Indian state ethnically — Nepali, Lepcha, Bhutia communities have distinct customs. General respect + observation > assuming uniform Indian customs.
  • Common Scams

    1 tip
'Zero Point' vs Zero Point: some tour operators include viewpoint near Yumthang called 'Zero Point' that is NOT actual Zero Point/Yumesamdong at 4,428m. Confirm 'Zero Point' on itinerary is at Yumesamdong (4,428m) end of civilian road. Permit validity: North Sikkim permit specifies entry date and district — arriving different date or visiting areas not on permit results in being turned back. Read permit carefully. Pelling 'Kangchenjunga view' guarantee: ask to see actual room before check-in and confirm unobstructed view. Yak ride price at Tsomgo: fixed government rate ₹200-300 — some handlers quote ₹500+ to first-time visitors. Confirm rate before mounting.
  • Health & Medical

    1 tip
No specific vaccinations required for Sikkim. STNM Hospital in Gangtok is primary medical facility. North Sikkim medical access: Army Field Medical Units at Lachung and Thangu (for altitude emergencies). Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage essential for North Sikkim circuit (Gurudongmar 5,183m). Heat NOT an issue in Sikkim — even May Gangtok at 22°C is mild. Altitude IS the primary health concern. Diamox prescription from Indian doctor recommended for visitors over 50 or with prior altitude difficulty. Stomach issues from local food: less common than other Indian destinations — Sikkim hygiene generally good.
Honest review

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Sikkim — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Gurudongmar Lake 9:30am at 5,183m (Free, permit required). One of highest lakes in world, sacred to 3 religions, accessible by road. The specific navy blue at high altitude with 6,000m peaks reflected. The silence of the high plateau. The single most significant Sikkim experience.

  • Nathula Pass border gate ₹200 permit. Standing at the actual India-China border with soldiers from both sides visible 5m apart. Available only to Indian nationals. The only geopolitical experience of this specificity available to Indian citizens anywhere.

  • Kangchenjunga 5am from Pelling (Free with northwest-facing hotel). World's 3rd highest peak in first light, 45 minutes before valley cloud covers it. Set the alarm. The window is narrow. It is correct.

  • Rumtek Monastery 6am morning prayer (Free). The Karmapa's monastery, the Kagyu prayer at 6am, 3 other visitors in the hall. The ritual instruments. The golden throne. The most specifically Tibetan Buddhist living monastery experience in Sikkim.

  • Yumthang hot springs (Free). 40-50°C geothermal water emerging from the ground at 3,500m in the May mountain cold. The most warming specific thing in the North Sikkim cold morning.

  • Zangdopelri model at Pemayangste (₹30 monastery entry). The 7-level hand-carved and painted wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's celestial palace — the most extraordinary single crafted object in any Sikkim monastery, by a single monk, 3m high.

  • Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (₹20). Largest Tibetan manuscript collection in India (60,000+ manuscripts). The Kangyur in 108 silk-bound volumes. The most intellectually specific ₹20 spent in any Indian state.

  • Organic Sikkim black cardamom from Government Emporium (₹800-₩1,200/100g). 70% of world supply grown in Sikkim. Source pricing significantly below Delhi organic market. The most specifically Sikkimese edible souvenir.

  • Zero Point at 4,428m (Free with North Sikkim permit). End of civilian road in North Sikkim. May: snow-covered plateau + high-altitude rhododendrons in bloom + 6,000m peaks visible on all sides. The civilian end of the road.

  • Tsomgo Lake yak ride (₹200-300). Decorated yaks at lake edge at 3,753m for 15-min lakeside circuit. Closest specific Sikkim Tibetan-Buddhist herding tradition experience accessible from Gangtok day trip.

  • Not acclimatising before Gurudongmar

the single most dangerous Sikkim mistake. Arriving in Gangtok and driving directly to Gurudongmar (5,183m) without 2 nights at Gangtok (1,650m) and 1 night at Lachen (2,750m) produces severe altitude sickness. HACE at 5,183m is life-threatening. 2+1 night acclimatisation is non-negotiable.

  • Nathula on a weekday (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). Nathula Pass is typically closed on Mon-Wed.

Better moveCheck current schedule at SNT Bus Stand Gangtok on day of permit purchase. Standard open days are Thursday-Sunday. Arriving on closed day wastes the entire Nathula day.

  • North Sikkim without permits organised the day before. The North Sikkim permit checkpoint at Mangan (65km from Gangtok) will turn back vehicles without correct permit. Must be organised in Gangtok — DC office (morning hours) or registered tour operator (more efficient). Don't assume permit available at checkpoint.

  • Pelling hotel without checking the Kangchenjunga view. Not all Pelling hotels face northwest. East-facing or south-facing rooms give no Kangchenjunga view regardless of 'mountain view' marketing.

Better moveAsk specifically which direction rooms face, which rooms have Kangchenjunga views, from which floor.

  • Only Gangtok and East Sikkim. The Tsomgo-Nathula day trip from Gangtok is standard tourist circuit and misses 80% of Sikkim. Gurudongmar (North), Pelling Kangchenjunga (West), Pemayangste Monastery (West) are the experiences that make Sikkim more than a pleasant hill station.

  • Underestimating Zero Point temperature. Zero Point at 4,428m in May: 2-8°C with wind. Temperature drop from Yumthang (8-15°C) to Zero Point is significant and faster than expected. Carry: thermal layers, wind jacket, gloves, warm hat for Zero Point regardless of Yumthang temperature.

  • ATM dependency in North Sikkim. No reliable ATMs beyond Gangtok in North Sikkim circuit. Lachung has one ATM frequently not operational. Lachen has none. Withdraw ₹5,000-8,000 per person in Gangtok before North Sikkim 3-4 day circuit.

  • Plastic in Sikkim. India's first state to ban plastic bags (2016 order). Carrying single-use plastic bags in Sikkim can result in fines at checkpoints and markets. Carry reusable cloth bags from home — state is specifically serious about plastic enforcement.

  • 'Zero Point' vs Zero Point confusion. Some tour operators include a viewpoint near Yumthang called 'Zero Point' that is NOT the actual Zero Point/Yumesamdong at 4,428m. Confirm with operator that 'Zero Point' on itinerary is Yumesamdong (4,428m) at end of civilian road.

  • Yak ride price at Tsomgo. Yak ride at Tsomgo Lake has fixed government price (₹200-300 for 15-min). Some handlers quote ₹500+ to first-time visitors. Confirm rate before mounting. Government-displayed rates posted at lake parking area.

Gurudongmar 5,183m sacred lake. Nathula 4,310m border (Indians only, ₹200). Kangchenjunga 8,586m 5am Pelling window. North Sikkim permit free. Acclimatise 2 Gangtok + 1 Lachen before 5,183m.

Frequently asked questions

Sikkim Travel FAQs

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Sikkim.

No ILP (Inner Line Permit) for Indian nationals in main Sikkim areas. Standard Aadhaar/Voter ID/Passport sufficient for Gangtok, Pelling, Ravangla. Special permits needed for: North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Gurudongmar — FREE for Indians, from Gangtok DC office or tour operator) and Nathula Pass (₹200/person, from SNT Bus Stand Gangtok). Foreigners require Protected Area Permit (PAP) for all of Sikkim. The North Sikkim permit must be organised 1 day before departure — checked at Mangan checkpoint 65km from Gangtok.
Budget: ₹15,000–₩25,000/person (Siliguri ground travel included). Mid-range: ₹28,000–₩45,000. Flights to Bagdogra + Siliguri-Gangtok transfer: ₹5,000–₩15,000 additional. Daily ground: Budget ₹1,500–₩3,000 · Mid ₹4,000–₩7,500. Premium ₹9,000-18,000/day with helicopter Gurudongmar option ₹35,000-50,000.
Gangtok → Lachen (135km, 5 hrs) overnight. Then 4:30am MANDATORY army convoy departure from Lachen → Gurudongmar (75km, 5 hrs each way). North Sikkim permit required (FREE, from Gangtok DC office or tour operator). Acclimatise 2 nights Gangtok (1,650m) + 1 night Lachen (2,750m) before the 5,183m lake visit. Total: minimum 2 North Sikkim nights. Mandatory return before 1pm to avoid altitude sickness at 5,183m.
No — Nathula Pass (4,310m, India-China border) is open to INDIAN NATIONALS ONLY. Foreign passport holders are specifically excluded. This exclusion is unique among major Indian tourist sites and is the result of the strategic sensitivity of the India-China border location. Permit: ₹200/person from SNT Bus Stand Gangtok. Open typically Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (subject to security-related changes — confirm current schedule on day of permit purchase).
March–April: rhododendron peak at lower-mid altitudes (1,500-3,500m). May: higher altitude rhododendrons at Zero Point + Gurudongmar plateau, all North Sikkim roads fully open, pre-monsoon clarity — Vikas's May 2023 visit. October–November: post-monsoon = finest Kangchenjunga clarity of the year, all sites accessible. Avoid June–August (heavy monsoon, North Sikkim road disruption from landslides, visibility reduced).
Pelling (West Sikkim, 130km from Gangtok) — northwest-facing hotel room/terrace at 5am. The window: 5:15am–6am approximately (the valley cloud rises by 6am). May: pre-monsoon clear mornings. October: finest post-monsoon clarity. Book a northwest-facing room specifically — not all Pelling hotels face Kangchenjunga. Confirm with hotel: 'Does the room face Kangchenjunga?' and 'From which floor is the view clearest?' Best Pelling hotels for the view: Hotel Garuda, Norbu Ghang Resort, Kabur Residency.
Significant at Gurudongmar (5,183m) and Zero Point (4,428m). Standard acclimatisation: 2 nights Gangtok (1,650m) + 1 night Lachen (2,750m) before Gurudongmar. Symptoms (severe headache, nausea, shortness of breath at rest, confusion): descend immediately. HACE and HAPE at 5,183m are medical emergencies. Consult a doctor about Diamox before the trip. Tsomgo Lake (3,753m) and Nathula (4,310m): mild symptoms possible but manageable with slow movement and hydration. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage essential for North Sikkim circuit.
6 days: Gangtok + East Sikkim (Nathula) + North Sikkim (Gurudongmar + Yumthang) — essential minimum. 8 days: Vikas's complete circuit with West Sikkim (Pelling + Pemayangste). 12 days: total Sikkim with Yuksom + Goecha La base trek (Dzongri 4,020m). Minimum meaningful: 6 days. Recommended Sikkim for first-time visitors: 8 days (Vikas's circuit covering all 4 districts including Kangchenjunga dawn from Pelling).
