About Georgia

Georgia is a South Caucasus country bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the east, and the Black Sea to the west — geographic intersection of Eastern Europe, Western Asia, and the Caucasus mountain system. Continuously inhabited and continuously creative for 8,000 years: oldest gold jewellery in the world (5th millennium BC), oldest winemaking tradition on Earth (8,000-year qvevri amphora tradition), specific alphabet and literary tradition uninterrupted since the 4th century AD. 365-day visa-free access for Indians — the longest free access Georgia offers any nationality.

At a glance

Key Features of Georgia

  • Gergeti Trinity ChurchThe 14th-century church at 2,170m sits on a spur directly below Mount Kazbek (5,047m). The March snow around the church and the winter-clear summit make this the most dramatically positioned single building in the Caucasus.
  • Old Tbilisi Sulfur BathsThe Abanotubani bathhouse district is built over natural sulfur springs in the Metekhi Gorge. A private sulfur bath at 38–40°C costs ₹400–800 equivalent — the most specific Tbilisi cultural institution, unchanged in character since the 16th century.
  • Kakheti Wine RegionGeorgia has 8,000 years of continuous winemaking — the world's oldest — using qvevri, clay amphoras buried in the earth. March in Kakheti: the vines bare, the wine estate tours quiet, and the orange wine (the skin-contact white) at its most complex after winter barrel age.
  • Mtskhetathe former Georgian capital, 20km from Tbilisi — has the Jvari Monastery (6th century, on the hill above the river confluence — the most photographed Georgian church exterior) and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Both are accessible in a half-day from Tbilisi.
Why visit

Why Visit Georgia

Georgia sits between the Greater Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea, with a 3,000-year-old alphabet, amber wine (an 8,000-year-old tradition), and mountains that rival Switzerland's at a fraction of the cost. Tbilisi's old town is a mix of Orthodox churches, Persian-era bathhouses, ornate ironwork balconies, and world-class natural wine bars within 2km. Kazbegi's Gergeti Trinity Church at 2,170m, with Mount Kazbek (5,047m) directly behind it, is one of the most dramatic single-landscape photographs from the Caucasus. Svaneti's medieval tower villages have been inhabited for over 1,000 years. Visa-free for Indians (1 year). No direct flights from India; connect via Istanbul or Dubai. Davit Gareja cave monastery complex on the Azerbaijan border contains 6th-century frescoes across 19 cliff-carved monasteries in a semi-desert ridge — one of the most dramatically isolated early Christian heritage sites in the world.
Best time: May–October.

Specialist Notes

Aniket's March 2023 Personal Notes

Georgian Military Highway (March 8, 7 am departure from Tbilisi): The marshrutka (shared minibus, GEL 15 ≈ ₹435 per person, 5 hours to Stepantsminda) departed Didube Bus Station at 7 am. The route: Tbilisi valley → Mtskheta junction → Ananuri Fortress (the 16th-century castle on the Zhinvali Reservoir — visible from the highway, worth a 30-minute stop) → Gudauri plateau (the ski resort visible to the right, the Greater Caucasus ridge visible ahead) → Jvari Pass (2,379m, the highest point — the road cleared of snow, the snowfields 3m high on both sides) → descent into the Terek River valley → Stepantsminda. The 150km road that goes from 500m to 2,379m and back down to 1,700m in 5 hours.

Gergeti Trinity Church (March 8, 1 pm): The 45-minute walk up from the village of Stepantsminda. The path in March: partially snow-covered above 1,800m; ice crampons not necessary, but grippy shoes essential. The church at the top: the 14th-century stone, the wooden crosses, the Mount Kazbek glacier visible to the north, the Terek valley visible to the south. 8 other visitors at 1pm on a Wednesday in March. By August, the same path has 200 visitors simultaneously.

Tbilisi Abanotubani (March 6, 8 pm): The Gulo's Thermal Spa (the most established of the Abanotubani bathhouses, GEL 30/person/hour ≈ ₹870 for the private cabin). The sulfur water at 42°C, the steam, the specific sulfur smell (eggs and minerals, not unpleasant — it is the specific smell of the hot spring, geological rather than organic). The 1-hour bath: the most effective Tbilisi recovery experience after a full day of old town walking on uneven cobblestones.

Kakheti Wine Cellar (March 10): The Telavi wine cellar (Château Telavi — one of the oldest wine producers in Kakheti; the underground cellar with qvevri amphoras buried in rows; GEL 30 for a tour + tasting ≈ ₹870). The amber wine (the Rkatsiteli grape, skin-contact, 6 months in qvevri underground) — the colour is deep amber-orange, the tannins are those of a red wine, but the flavour is the Rkatsiteli grape's specific combination of dried apricot, walnut, and mountain herb. Georgia is the origin of wine. This is the original wine. It tastes like the original wine.

Gergeti Trinity Church

Gergeti Trinity Church

Mountain Church with Glacier Behind It

The Gergeti Trinity Church (Tsminda Sameba, 14th century, 2,170m altitude, on a basalt spur above the village of Stepantsminda) is the most photographed image in Georgian tourism — the medieval stone church on its triangular rocky pinnacle, the Mount Kazbek glacier (the Gergeti Glacier on the south face of Kazbek, 5,047m) rising directly behind it in the north. The specific Gergeti image works in every season: winter (snow on the spur, snow on Kazbek), spring (green meadows, glacier above), summer (clear air, the full mountain), autumn (the spur in gold). In March: the winter version — the snow on the approach path, the church in the snow, the glacier in the March mountain light. The approach: 45-minute walk from Stepantsminda village (path marked from village centre, ascent 450m, upper section requires grip shoes in March snow). Or 4WD option (GEL 20 return per person ≈ ₹580). Church interior open when priest present, 14th-century frescoes partially visible in candle light.

Tbilisi Old Town

Tbilisi Old Town

1,500 Years of Architecture

First-timersBudget stays
The Tbilisi Old Town (district below the Narikala Fortress ridge, the Mtkvari River to the west, the Abanotubani to the southeast) concentrates 1,500 years of layered urban history in approximately 2km — the 6th-century Anchiskhati Basilica (oldest surviving church in Tbilisi, 6th-century basilica rebuilt 17th century, original proportions visible in nave), the 11th-century Metekhi Church (on cliff above river bend, equestrian statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali — 5th-century king who founded Tbilisi), the 16th-century Narikala Fortress (Persian-built fortress on ridge above old town, partially restored walls accessible by cable car from Rike Park or by foot), and the 19th-century carved wooden balcony architecture of Persian-influenced residential buildings (oriel windows, projecting wooden balconies, decorative carved screens). Bridge of Peace (2010 pedestrian bridge, bowtie-shaped, stainless steel and LED glass panels) is most photographed modern Tbilisi structure.

Abanotubani Sulfur Baths

Abanotubani Sulfur Baths

Tbilisi's Original Reason for Existing

The Abanotubani district ('bath district' in Georgian) is the neighbourhood of the hot sulfur springs that made Tbilisi — legend says King Vakhtang Gorgasali was hunting in 5th century when his falcon chased a pheasant into the spring, both birds emerged boiled, and the king recognised the value of the location and founded a city there. The springs are still there, still at 37-43°C, still sulfurous, still operational — the dome-roofed bathhouses built over the springs giving the Abanotubani its specific roofline (shallow brick domes punctuating street level, steam rising from ventilation slots). The bathhouse visit: any of 6-8 operating bathhouses in Abanotubani offer private cabin rental. Gulo's Thermal Spa and Royal Bath are most established. GEL 25-35/person/hour (₹725-1,015) for private cabin. Public bathing (gender-separated common areas) is GEL 3-5 (₹87-145). Specific sulfur bath experience: 42°C water, mineral sulfur smell, softer geothermally heated water absorbing into skin.

Living Ancient Capital

Mtskheta (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 20km from Tbilisi, 30 minutes by marshrutka) The Ancient Capital The spiritual capital of Georgia (15km from Tbilisi) — the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (the most sacred Georgian church, built on the site where Christ's robe is said to be buried), the Jvari Monastery (the 6th-century cliff-top monastery that gave Georgia's most recognisable single heritage silhouette), and the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers visible from the monastery viewpoint.

Kakheti Wine Country

Kakheti Wine Country

Sighnaghi, Telavi, Qvevri

Kakheti Wine Region: The world's oldest wine-making tradition (8,000 years, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) — the qvevri clay amphora buried in the earth, the amber/orange wine from skin-contact white grapes, the Alaverdi Monastery winery (the most historically continuous wine production in Georgia), and the Signagi wine town (the walled hilltop town above the Alazani valley). Most specifically rewarding in the September-October harvest.

Gudauri

Gudauri

Affordable Caucasus Ski Resort

SkiersMid-range stays

Gudauri is the largest and most developed ski resort in Georgia — 80km of runs across 4 zones, 9 modern chairlifts, gondola to summit, and specific Gudauri appeal: lift passes at GEL 60-80/day equipment rental at GEL 40-60/day and Greater Caucasus panorama from summit (peaks of Russian Caucasus visible across border 10km north — Kazbek group visible from Gudauri summit on clear days). March Gudauri: typically best powder conditions of season — March snowfall over base built since December gives deepest and most consistent snow of year. Resort in March has fewer weekend day-trippers from Tbilisi. Off-piste possibilities (Gudauri has best backcountry access in Caucasus — north-facing bowls accessible from summit chairlift consistently hold powder through March).

Georgian Food

Georgian Food

The Caucasus Feast

Georgian food is the most specifically unique cuisine in the Caucasus — specific combination of walnut (every cold dish has walnut sauce or paste), pomegranate (acidic fruit used both for flavour and as garnish throughout Kakheti region), and herbs (coriander, fenugreek, marigold petals — khmeli suneli spice mixture is Georgian equivalent of garam masala) gives flavour profile that exists nowhere else. Specific Georgian dishes: khachapuri (cheese bread — Adjarian khachapuri is boat-shaped bread with molten suluguni cheese, raw egg, and butter on top, broken and mixed at table — most photographed Georgian food), khinkali (soup dumpling — twisted dough around filling of spiced meat broth, correct eating technique is to pick up dumpling by topknot, bite small hole, suck out broth, then eat remaining dumpling), and badrijani nigvzit (fried aubergine rolls with walnut paste — most specifically Georgian flavour combination of bitter aubergine with rich walnut).

Georgia Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    4 tips
365-day visa-free for Indians — the LONGEST free access Georgia offers any nationality. Valid Indian passport (6 months minimum validity) + arrival at TBS airport = entry with 365-day stamp. No application, no fee, no booking confirmation required. No proof of funds routinely checked. The most efficient European-adjacent visa for Indian travellers.
1 GEL = ₹29 — Georgia is one of the most affordable European-adjacent destinations for Indians. Full restaurant meal with Georgian wine: GEL 40-60 (≈ ₹1,160-1,740). Private sulfur bath cabin: GEL 30/person/hour (≈ ₹870). Carry GEL cash for Kazbegi, marshrutka fares, market purchases, and small restaurants. ATMs Tbilisi abundant; Kazbegi has 2 ATMs not always functional. Withdraw GEL in Tbilisi before mountain journey.
Bolt taxi in Tbilisi — Bolt app works throughout Tbilisi (GEL 5-15 per trip ≈ ₹145-435). More reliable than flagging street taxis and with upfront price display. Download before arriving. Georgian Military Highway private car: for Kazbegi day/overnight, private car (GEL 150-200 for full car = ₹4,350-5,800, split between 4 people) gives flexibility to stop at Ananuri, Gudauri viewpoint, and photograph mountain road. Marshrutka (GEL 15/person) is budget option but doesn't stop for photographs.
March pricing — Tbilisi hotels 30-40% CHEAPER than June-September peak. Gudauri lift passes at end-of-season rates. Kakheti wineries with fewer group tours = more personalised tasting. Duty-free Georgian wine: Tbilisi International Airport duty-free priced at production-cost levels (GEL 15-30 per bottle ≈ ₹435-870). Buy maximum allowable on departure — same wine in India via import channels costs 5-8x more.
  • Safety

    3 tips
Georgia is very safe — consistently among safer European-vicinity countries. Low violent crime. 112 emergency number covers police, ambulance, fire. Kazbegi road safety in winter: Georgian Military Highway maintained and generally safe in March. Drive only in DAYLIGHT hours between Gudauri and Kazbegi (sharp curves, no guardrails in sections). Marshrutka drivers know road in all conditions.
Gergeti Trinity Church in snow — grip ESSENTIAL — upper section of Gergeti walk (above 1,800m) has ice and compacted snow in March. Grip shoes or microspikes (available for rent in Stepantsminda village at GEL 5/day ≈ ₹145) are correct footwear. Do NOT attempt walk in smooth-soled shoes in March snow. Underestimating Kazbegi cold: Stepantsminda March -5 to 5°C. Gergeti exposed section drops to -8°C with wind. Thermal layers + wind jacket + grip shoes MANDATORY.
Sulfur bath temperature check — Abanotubani baths vary 37°C-43°C depending on spring source and bathhouse. Hottest baths (43°C) can be overwhelming first 5 minutes — ask for temperature before entering and request temperature reduction (most have cold water inlet) if needed. Medical access: Tbilisi has adequate private hospital infrastructure (Aversi Clinic, GeoHospital). Kazbegi has small medical post. Travel insurance with medical coverage essential.
  • Etiquette

    2 tips
Orthodox church dress — cover shoulders and knees inside all Georgian Orthodox churches (Gergeti, Svetitskhoveli, Jvari, Anchiskhati). Headscarves for women available at church entrance. Remove hats on entry. Photography in churches: most Georgian Orthodox churches permit photography (without flash). During active service: wait for service to end, stand to side, photograph only when no priest is officiating directly ahead of camera.
Georgian toast protocol — if invited to Georgian supra (feast) or given toast by Georgian host, correct response is to drink ENTIRE glass (not sip). Refusing Georgian toast is culturally impolite. If you don't drink alcohol, inform host BEFORE supra begins — juice or water provided as respectful alternative. Georgian hospitality: if Georgian resident or shopkeeper offers tea, coffee, or food, accepting is culturally appreciated response. Bargaining at Dezerter Bazaar: accepted for non-food items (churchkhela, spices in quantity, handicrafts). Food (fresh produce, bread) is priced, not negotiated.
  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
Unofficial Kazbegi guides — men at Stepantsminda village junction offer to guide Gergeti Trinity Church walk for GEL 30-50 (≈ ₹870-1,450). Walk is clearly marked and requires no guide in good weather. 4WD taxi (GEL 20 return ≈ ₹580) is legitimate alternative to walking — NOT a 'guide.' Currency exchange in street: do NOT exchange money with unofficial street exchangers. Bank ATMs give best GEL rate (TBC Bank, Bank of Georgia).
Overpriced tourist restaurants near Rustaveli — Rustaveli Avenue and Freedom Square tourist strip restaurants charge 2-3x Tbilisi standard prices for identical food. Old town side streets and Vera/Vake districts have best-value authentic Georgian food. Best Adjarian khachapuri: Machakhela chain (GEL 8-12 ≈ ₹232-348) or neighbourhood bakeries. Kakheti 'free wine tasting' that isn't: some Kakheti wineries advertise 'free' tastings at gate but charge for accompanying food at prices making total equivalent to paid tasting. Confirm TOTAL cost (wine + food) before sitting down.
March Gudauri resort closing date — Gudauri's official closing date varies annually by snow conditions (some years close early March, good snow years extend to late April). Check gudauri.info or Tbilisi Ski Club social media before building itinerary around Gudauri ski day. Booking July-August peak when March gives same Georgia 30-40% cheaper: summer peak gives 35°C Tbilisi + maximum crowds + highest prices. March gives same Gergeti view (in snow), same sulfur baths, same wine PLUS Gudauri skiing + fewer crowds + 30-40% cheaper. Strategic alternative.

Honest review

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Georgia — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Gergeti Trinity Church at dawn (GEL 20 4WD return ≈ ₹580)

14th-century church at 2,170m with Mount Kazbek glacier behind it, in snow, at 7am with 4 other people. Single most specific Georgia image, before day-trip crowd. Requires overnight in Stepantsminda.

  • Abanotubani sulfur bath private cabin (GEL 30/person/hour ≈ ₹870)

Geothermal spring that gave Tbilisi its name, still operating after 1,500 years. 42°C sulfur water in private cabin. Most effective and most specific Tbilisi recovery experience.

  • Narikala cable car (GEL 2.50 return ≈ ₹73)

Best aerial view of Tbilisi's old town, Mtkvari River, and fortress for ₹73. No comparable aerial city view at this price anywhere in Europe.

  • Kakheti amber wine tasting (GEL 20-40 ≈ ₹580-1,160 for 4-6 wines)

8,000-year Georgian winemaking tradition in original qvevri form. Amber Rkatsiteli — the wine that preceded all other wine traditions.

  • Mtskheta Jvari Monastery (free entry)

6th-century monastery above Aragvi-Kura confluence. Two rivers' different colours visible side by side for 500m. Free. 45 minutes from Tbilisi.

  • Gudauri ski pass (GEL 60-80/day ≈ ₹1,740-2,320)

Most affordable major ski resort in Europe's vicinity. Caucasus range visible from summit. March: best powder of season at end-of-season prices.

  • Georgian supra dinner

Shavi Lomi (GEL 80-120 ≈ ₹2,320-3,480) — Finest modern Georgian tasting menu. Natural amber wine pairing. Specific Georgian flavour vocabulary — walnut, pomegranate, tarragon, fenugreek — in most refined form.

  • Georgian Military Highway marshrutka (GEL 15 ≈ ₹435)

Most scenic road in Caucasus — 150km from 500m to 2,379m to 1,700m, through Ananuri Fortress, Gudauri plateau, Dariali Gorge — for ₹435.

  • Tbilisi cooking class khachapuri + khinkali (GEL 80-120 ≈ ₹2,320-3,480)

3 hours, includes 17-fold khinkali technique + Adjarian boat-shaped khachapuri + 2 other dishes + Georgian wine. La Maison Blanche or Georgian Culinary Academy. Eat what you made for lunch.

  • Mtskheta marshrutka day trip (GEL 1.50 ≈ ₹44 each way)

Most affordable UNESCO World Heritage day trip in the world: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral + Jvari Monastery + Aragvi-Kura confluence for ₹88 round trip. 20 minutes from Tbilisi. Free entry both sites.

  • Gergeti Trinity Church as day trip without overnight

Day-trip marshrutka from Tbilisi arrives Stepantsminda between 12pm-2pm. 4WD taxis run 9am-5pm. Day-tripper gets church in afternoon with 200 other day-trippers. Overnight visitor gets it at 7am dawn with 4 people. Overnight in Stepantsminda (GEL 50-100) most important Georgia decision.

  • Not trying the amber wine

Every Georgia visitor drinks regular Georgian red (Saperavi) and misses qvevri amber wine (Rkatsiteli skin-contact) — specific Georgian contribution to world wine culture with no equivalent in French, Italian, or Spanish wine traditions.

Better moveAsk specifically for 'amber wine' or 'skin-contact white'.

  • Visiting Kazbegi without checking the road

Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi generally open year-round but can be temporarily closed by rockfall, ice, or snow in winter.

Better moveCheck current road conditions at georoad.ge or with Tbilisi guesthouse before departing.

  • Only Tbilisi

Tbilisi is 2 days maximum for old town, baths, museum, food. Specific Georgia is Kazbegi (mountain church), Kakheti (wine), Mtskheta (ancient capital). 7-day Georgia trip spending 5 days in Tbilisi has used 60% of time on 20% of country's value.

  • Eating khachapuri at tourist restaurants

Tourist area khachapuri (near Rustaveli Avenue and main Tbilisi tourist streets) is 2-3x overpriced vs identical dish 2 streets away. Best Adjarian khachapuri at Machakhela chain (GEL 8-12 ≈ ₹232-348) or any neighbourhood bakery.

  • Gudauri on weekend from Tbilisi

Gudauri on Saturday January-February from Tbilisi: 2-hour lift queues. Gudauri on Tuesday in March: 10-minute queues. If itinerary allows, assign Gudauri day to weekday.

  • Not tipping marshrutka driver

Marshrutka between Tbilisi and Kazbegi costs GEL 15. Driver has driven 150km of mountain road in all weather conditions, knows every curve, has kept you safe. GEL 2-3 tip (₹58-87) is correct response.

  • Underestimating cold in Kazbegi

Stepantsminda in March: -5 to 5°C. Gergeti Trinity Church walk in March snow: temperature drops to -8°C with wind on exposed upper section. Thermal layers, wind jacket, grip shoes are MANDATORY — not optional.

Better moveDo not attempt Gergeti walk in March in trainers.

  • Booking July-August peak when March gives same Georgia 30-40% cheaper

Summer peak gives 35°C Tbilisi heat + maximum crowds + highest prices. March gives same Gergeti view (in snow), same sulfur baths, same wine, PLUS Gudauri skiing + fewer crowds + 30-40% cheaper. Strategic value alternative.

  • Renting car for Tbilisi-based trip

Tbilisi parking is impossible, old town is pedestrian-only, Bolt taxi covers everything in city for GEL 5-15 (₹145-435). Car rental GEL 80-120/day waste for Tbilisi-based trips.

Better moveReserve for Kakheti or Military Highway only if explicit need for flexible stops.

Valid Indian passport + arrival at Tbilisi International Airport (or any Georgian border crossing) = entry with a 365-day stamp. No application, no fee, no booking required.
Budget: ₹55,000-₹80,000/person (flights included). Mid-range: ₹90,000-₹1,40,000. Flights Delhi → Tbilisi return: ₹30,000-₹75,000. Daily ground: Budget ₹2,000-₹4,500 · Mid ₹5,000-₹9,000. Georgia is one of the most affordable destinations accessible from India within a 5-hour flight.
May is the finest overall month: wildflowers, all roads open, moderate crowds, good weather. March: skiing + Gergeti in snow + 30-40% cheaper, minimal tourists. September-October: Kakheti grape harvest (Rtveli), wine festival Tbilisi, autumn colour. July-August: maximum tourists and heat in Tbilisi (avoid).
The Gergeti Trinity Church is the defining image of Georgian mountain tourism and one of the most dramatically positioned medieval churches in the world. The Kazbegi trip (5 hours from Tbilisi, overnight recommended) is the MOST important single day/night excursion in Georgia. The church at dawn in March snow is the most specifically rewarding version.
Georgian amber (orange) wine is white grape wine fermented with the grape skins in contact with the juice for weeks or months — skin contact gives wine its amber-orange colour and red wine-like tannins. Specific Georgian product: made in qvevri (clay amphoras buried underground), using Rkatsiteli grape. Flavour: dried apricot, walnut, mountain herbs. UNIQUE to Georgia. Available at every wine bar in Tbilisi and every Kakheti winery.
Return economy: ₹30,000-₹75,000. IndiGo (seasonal direct Delhi-Tbilisi), Air Arabia via Sharjah, FlyDubai via Dubai, Pegasus via Istanbul. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for March off-peak.
Yes — Georgia is among the safer countries in the European vicinity. Low violent crime rates, 112 emergency number covers all services, Tbilisi's tourist areas are well-patrolled. Solo travellers: standard urban precautions in Tbilisi, normal caution on mountain roads (travel in daylight between Gudauri and Kazbegi). Hindi/English speakers find Georgia welcoming and accessible.
5 days: Tbilisi (2 nights) + Kazbegi overnight + Mtskheta day trip (essential minimum). 8 days: Aniket's complete March 2023 circuit with Kakheti wine country. 12 days: full Georgia with Batumi, Vardzia, and Uplistsikhe. Minimum meaningful Georgia: 5 days.
