About Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan was the second-largest republic of the Soviet Union and became independent in 1991. The country is divided into: Kazakh steppe (vast flat grassland, 44% of the country), mountain zones (Tian Shan and Alatau ranges above Almaty, peaks above 7,000m), Aral Sea basin (ecological disaster zone), Caspian coast (western oil fields), and Nur-Sultan/Astana (futuristic purpose-built capital).

At a glance

Key Features Of Kazakhstan

  • Charyn CanyonThe "Valley of Castles" section of the 150km Charyn River canyon has 300m ochre sandstone formations and is 200km east of Almaty. March gives the canyon at its lowest tourist volume and the most dramatic shadow depth from the low spring sun.
  • Shymbulak Ski ResortThe most modern ski resort in Central Asia sits at 2,260–3,200m above Almaty with the longest run at 3.5km. The gondola (accessible without skiing) gives the 2,260m panorama of the Almaty valley and Tian Shan peaks above.
  • Almaty Kok-Tobe HillThe 1,100m viewing hill above Kazakhstan's largest city is accessible by cable car from Dostyk Avenue. The full Almaty city grid is visible below with the Tian Shan mountains directly behind — the most specific single Almaty viewpoint.
  • Nur-Sultan ArchitectureThe purpose-built capital (relocated from Almaty in 1997) has the Baiterek Tower, the Khan Shatyr (the world's largest tent-shaped structure), and the Palace of Peace in a single walkable centre. The most concentrated futurist capital city architecture in the world.
Why visit

Why Visit Kazakhstan

Why Kazakhstan in March 2026? March gives Kazakhstan the specific winter-to-spring transition quality — Shymbulak ski resort in its final good weeks (March is the last reliable powder month), Charyn Canyon in the winter light that makes the red walls their most vivid, and Almaty city in the specific pre-tourist-season quiet that June-August replaces with visitors from Russia and China. And in March, the Kazakh steppe around Nur-Sultan is at its most dramatically empty — the snow-covered steppe extending to the horizon in every direction from the futuristic city, the contrast between the architectural ambition of the capital and the absolute flatness of its surroundings the most specifically Kazakhstan image available.

The Shymbulak ski run at 10am on March 12, 2024. The gondola from Medeu (1,691m) to Shymbulak base (2,200m) takes 8 minutes — Almaty city visible below the gondola as it ascends, the Tian Shan peaks appearing above the ridgeline. At the resort base: the ski run descending to the south with the mountain range in the background. I skied 4 runs. On each run: the Tian Shan visible ahead and above, the Almaty city visible below and behind. The specific Shymbulak visual — the city below and the mountains above, the ski run between — is the most specifically Central Asian ski experience I can describe because there is no equivalent: a major Central Asian city visible from a 3,000m ski run 25km from the city centre.

The Charyn Canyon at 9am on March 13: the Valley of Castles in the March morning light (the canyon walls a deep red-orange, the low March sun angle entering the canyon from the east and illuminating the western wall). The trail through the Valley of Castles (2km each way from the canyon rim road to the Charyn River) in March: the canyon floor hard-packed and dry, the canyon walls 200m above on both sides. At 9am: 6 other visitors in the Valley of Castles. The Charyn Canyon at 9am in July has 200.

Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon

Valley of Castles

Charyn Canyon is the most dramatic natural landscape in Kazakhstan and one of the most spectacular canyon systems in the world — 154km long, up to 300m deep, red-orange sandstone eroded over 12 million years by the Charyn River. Valley of Castles (most-visited 2km section, accessible from the canyon rim road via a steep descent trail — 20 minutes down, 30 minutes up) has vertical sandstone pillars and walls eroded into castle-tower, cathedral-spire, and battlement shapes, with an orange-red colour at maximum saturation.

Shymbulak

Shymbulak

Skiing Above a Major City

Shymbulak (2,200m base altitude, mountain resort above Almaty in Ile-Alatau National Park — 25 km from the city centre, accessible by the Medeu road and an 8-minute gondola from Medeu) is the finest ski resort in Central Asia. The city of Almaty (1.8 million people) is visible below the ski run; the Tian Shan mountain range (peaks above 7,000m) is visible above; and the ski run lies between them. Resort infrastructure: 5 chairlifts and a gondola from Medeu, 20km of marked runs (green, blue, red — no black), ski and snowboard rental at base, ski school.

Medeu

Medeu

Ice Skating at 1,691m

Medeu (1,691 m, 15 km above Almaty in the Medeu gorge) is the world's highest-altitude outdoor speed skating rink — 10,500 sq m of ice, with surrounding snow-capped peaks visible above the rink and a dam behind the rink visible against the mountain. Built for 1972 Soviet Olympic bid. Has hosted 122 world speed skating records (high altitude and cold air give the ice surface the fastest conditions in the world). Public afternoon session: rink with Almaty city visible below through a gorge opening, Tian Shan peaks above, March cold (-5°C at 1,691m) providing an ideal skating surface. Medeu-to-Shymbulak gondola departs from the gondola base 500 m above the ice rink.

Almaty Green Bazaar

Almaty Green Bazaar

Central Asian Market

First-timersBudget stays

Zelyony Bazaar is most concentrated Central Asian market experience in Kazakhstan — 4-storey covered market with fresh produce (Almaty apples — word 'Almaty' translates to 'father of apples,' wild apple trees of Tian Shan being genetic origin of cultivated apple), dried fruit (Kazakh dried apricot — smaller and more concentrated than Turkish or Iranian apricots), fermented dairy (kumis — fermented mare's milk, most specifically Kazakh beverage), horsemeat products (kazy sausage), and spice section (cumin, barberry, dried cranberry, wild garlic). 8 am is the market's most active time before tourist hours.

Architecture of Ambition

BusinessMid-range stays
Nur-Sultan (capital of Kazakhstan since 1997, 1,000km north of Almaty on Kazakh steppe — current official name Astana, though 'Nur-Sultan' still widely used) is most specifically extraordinary city in Central Asia: city of 1.2 million people built from zero on empty steppe in 25 years, with architectural brief that invited world's most prominent architects. Baiterek Tower (97m, mythical Tree of Life symbol — observation deck steppe panorama), Khan Shatyr (giant transparent ETFE tent by Norman Foster, 150m high, 100,000 sq m — indoor beach and amusement park inside tent on steppe), Palace of Peace and Reconciliation (Norman Foster pyramid, 77m), Nur-Alem sphere (100m glass sphere from EXPO 2017), Hazrat Sultan Mosque (largest mosque in Central Asia) form most concentrated collection of architectural statements in post-Soviet world.

Kolsai Lakes

Kolsai Lakes

Three Alpine Lakes

Kolsai Lakes are a series of three connected alpine lakes at 1,818 m, 2,252 m, and 2,750 m in the Tian Shan foothills. Lakes are connected by the Kolsai River; surrounding forest is visible from the lake surfaces; upper lakes (Kolsai-3 at 2,750m) offer panoramic Tian Shan views. March Kolsai Lakes: partially snow-covered and fully serene (summer wooden boat rentals and trekkers absent).

Big Almaty Lake

Glacial Turquoise

First-timersBudget stays

Big Almaty Lake is the most accessible high-altitude lake near Almaty — turquoise water (colour from glacial rock flour suspended in glacial meltwater), surrounding 4,000m peaks, the city visible below the lake on clear days. March: lake partially frozen (eastern shore in ice, western end open), surrounding snow, specific March colour of glacial water — pale turquoise that glacial flour produces before full summer melt.

Zenkov Cathedral + Panfilov Park

Zenkov Cathedral + Panfilov Park

Almaty's Living History

Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral, 1907, Panfilov Park — surviving wooden Orthodox cathedral, 56m high, only major building to survive 1911 Verny earthquake) and adjacent Panfilov Park (main public park of Almaty, 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Memorial — Soviet war monument to 28 guardsmen who died stopping German tanks at Moscow in 1941) together give most specifically Almaty historical experience: pre-Soviet Russian Orthodox wooden architecture beside Soviet-era memorial beside Kazakh pedestrian park culture of modern city. Cathedral interior: Russian Orthodox services at 9am and 6pm — morning service most accessible for visitors, incense, chanting, candles. Architect Andrei Zenkov designed structure with flexible wooden frame using same principle as ship's hull — survived 7.7 magnitude earthquake.

Shymbulak package pricing — Shymbulak ski resort offers day packages (lift pass + equipment + lunch) 15-20% cheaper than buying separately. Check shymbulak.com for current day package price before arriving at resort counter. Green Bazaar dried fruit purchase: dried Kazakh apricots (uruk), dried cranberries, and wild garlic at Green Bazaar significantly cheaper than Almaty airport duty-free.
  • Safety

    3 tips
Kazakhstan is safe — one of safest countries in Central Asia. Standard urban precautions in Almaty and Nur-Sultan. 2022 January protests politically resolved — no ongoing security concern for tourists. Mountain safety at Shymbulak: ski resort has avalanche monitoring, runs patrolled by ski rescue. Do NOT ski off-piste without local guide (Tian Shan backcountry has significant avalanche risk in March after new snowfall).
Charyn Canyon edge safety — canyon rim road overlooks have no barriers in some sections. Canyon walls 200-300m vertical. Keep 2m from unbarriered edges, especially in windy conditions (steppe wind can be significant at canyon rim). Nur-Sultan cold exposure: at -15°C with steppe wind, exposed skin can suffer frostbite in 20 minutes. Wear full cold-weather gear (gloves, hat, face covering) for all outdoor time in Nur-Sultan in March.
Medical access — Almaty has good private clinic infrastructure (IMC International Medical Centre Almaty most recommended for international visitors). Nur-Sultan: National Medical Holding hospitals. Travel insurance with medical coverage essential. Mountain ski accidents at Shymbulak require evacuation by ski patrol — insurance with ski coverage specifically recommended.
  • Etiquette

    2 tips
Mosque dress at Hazrat Sultan — full coverage for both genders. Women: headscarf mandatory (available at mosque entrance). Remove shoes at main prayer hall entrance. No photography during prayer times. Kazakh hospitality: if invited to Kazakh family home for tea, traditional offering is baursak (fried bread), kurt (hard dried cheese balls — acquired taste), and tea (strong black with sugar). Accept all offerings — declining is impolite.
Photography of government buildings — Presidential Palace area in Nur-Sultan has photography restrictions. Photography from distance (100m+) generally accepted; close-up photography of military or security personnel not. Respect at Panfilov Park Memorial: 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Memorial (WWII Soviet soldiers stopping German tanks at Moscow) is active memorial with Eternal Flame. Tipping: 10% at restaurants if service not included (Russian-style culture: gratuity appreciated but not mandatory as in US).
  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
Unofficial currency exchange — do NOT exchange KZT with unofficial street changers. Kaspi Bank and Halyk Bank ATMs in Almaty give best KZT rate. Green Bazaar has licensed exchange offices with competitive rates. Charyn Canyon 'guide' overpricing: unofficial guides at canyon rim offer floor tours for KZT 5,000-10,000. Valley of Castles trail is well-marked and does NOT require guide. If hiring guide: correct rate KZT 3,000-5,000 per group.
Shymbulak gondola — confirm return time on arrival. Gondola from Shymbulak to Medeu stops operating at specific time (typically 6pm). Missing last gondola means 1-hour walk down mountain road in dark at -5°C. Confirm last gondola time and build 30 minutes buffer. Khan Shatyr 'experience' upcharging: entry is free. Indoor beach facilities (wave pool, waterslides, surfing simulator) have individual entry fees (KZT 3,000-10,000 ≈ ₹510-1,700 for full beach package). Architecture visit is free; beach is paid.
Visa status verification — Kazakhstan's visa policy for Indians has been changing — do not assume visa-free status based on other travellers' 2023 reports. Always check e.gov.kz (official Kazakhstan eVisa portal) and Kazakhstan Embassy in New Delhi for current 2026 policy before booking flights. Apply eVisa minimum 2 weeks before travel if unsure of visa-free status. Better safe than visa-denied at Almaty airport.

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Kazakhstan — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Shymbulak skiing 10am March (KZT 6,000 lift + KZT 8,000 rental ≈ ₹2,380)

The Tian Shan above, Almaty below, the ski run between. Most specifically extraordinary ski resort position in Central Asia. March: last reliable powder.

  • Charyn Canyon 9:30am March (shared taxi KZT 3,000-5,000/seat ≈ ₹510-850)

Valley of Castles in winter light, 6 visitors, red canyon walls 200m above. Most dramatic natural landscape in Kazakhstan.

  • Khan Shatyr indoor beach at -10°C outside (Free entry)

Most specifically surreal architectural juxtaposition in Kazakhstan — indoor wave pool visible through transparent ETFE tent walls against winter steppe.

  • Medeu skating 2pm (KZT 1,500 ≈ ₹255)

World's highest-altitude outdoor rink. Tian Shan peaks above, Almaty city below through gorge. Firmest ice surface at 1,691m. 122 world records set here.

  • Hazrat Sultan Mosque (Free)

Largest mosque in Central Asia. Most decorated interior in Kazakhstan. Free entry. Non-Muslim entry welcome with appropriate dress. March exterior: white marble against deep blue March sky.

  • Baiterek Tower 97m (KZT 1,500 ≈ ₹255)

360° steppe city panorama. 1997 capital visible from its mythical Tree of Life symbol. Most specifically Kazakh architectural experience in Nur-Sultan.

  • Green Bazaar kumis tasting (KZT 200-300 ≈ ₹34-51)

Fermented mare's milk at Central Asian market. Most specifically Kazakh beverage at source. Bring uruk dried apricots home.

  • Beshbarmak at Navat Restaurant (KZT 3,000-6,000 ≈ ₹510-1,020)

Kazakh national dish in authentic nomadic setting. Flat noodles + boiled meat + onion rings + broth from a bowl. 5,000-year Kazakh nomadic food tradition.

  • Kok-Tobe cable car at sunset (KZT 1,500 return ≈ ₹255)

Almaty city panorama from 372m TV tower hill. Tian Shan peaks directly behind to south, Medeu gorge visible southeast. The Beatles statues. Sunset Almaty in evening light.

  • Almaty → Astana 1-hour flight (Air Astana KZT 22,000 ≈ ₹3,740)

Only practical inter-city connection. Skip 12-hour train. Direct from Almaty (ALA) to Astana (NQZ). Allows complete circuit in 7-8 days.

  • Nur-Sultan without warm clothing in March

Nur-Sultan in March is -10 to -15°C with steppe wind making effective temperature -20°C. Almaty in March is -2 to 10°C — same country, 1,000km apart, completely different temperature realities. Pack for -15°C when visiting Nur-Sultan in March.

  • Charyn Canyon without the Valley of Castles descent

Some day-trippers from Almaty view Charyn Canyon only from rim road (overlook points) and do not descend to canyon floor. Canyon floor (Valley of Castles walk, 2km each way) gives canyon walls 200m above on both sides — proportional immersion rim view cannot replicate.

  • Almaty → Nur-Sultan by train

Talgo service takes 12-13 hours across Kazakh steppe. Steppe view from train is historically significant but 13 hours is substantial vs 1-hour flight at affordable prices. Train is for the traveller who specifically wants the steppe; flight is for traveller who wants both cities in 8 days.

  • Not downloading Yandex Go before arrival

Standard Almaty and Nur-Sultan transport is Yandex Go app (Russian equivalent of Uber). Download and set up account with working phone number before arriving. App requires Russian or Kazakh phone number for verification (use hotel SIM or local Kazakhstani SIM).

  • Shymbulak without the non-skier gondola option

Shymbulak gondola from Medeu to resort base (KZT 2,500 return ≈ ₹425) gives Almaty city panorama from 2,200m without ski equipment. Non-skiers should take gondola to mountain restaurant — not wait at Medeu.

  • Only Almaty

Nur-Sultan (Astana) is 1 hour by flight and most architecturally extraordinary capital city in Central Asia. Almaty-only Kazakhstan trip is equivalent to visiting India only in Mumbai — correct but incomplete.

Better moveAdd 2 nights in Nur-Sultan.

  • Kolsai Lakes in March

Kolsai Lakes road partially snow-covered in March and lake access trail can be impassable. May-October is correct Kolsai season. March visitors who drive 275km from Almaty expecting alpine lake circuit may find road closed.

  • Russian language assumption

In Almaty (largest city, heavily Russian-influenced), most restaurants and services operate in Russian. In smaller towns and rural areas: Kazakh dominates. Google Translate (camera function on Cyrillic menus) essential — download Russian language pack offline before arrival.

  • Khan Shatyr 'experience' upcharging

Khan Shatyr entry is free. Indoor beach facilities (wave pool, waterslides, surfing simulator) have individual entry fees (KZT 3,000-10,000 ≈ ₹510-1,700 for full beach package). Visiting Khan Shatyr interior (architecture, food court, retail) is free; beach is paid.

  • Shymbulak gondola missed-return-time risk

Gondola from Shymbulak to Medeu stops operating at specific time (typically 6pm, confirm at resort on arrival). Missing last gondola means 1-hour walk down mountain road in dark at -5°C. Confirm last gondola time on arrival and build 30 minutes buffer.

Yes — Kazakhstan is one of the safer Central Asian countries. Low violent crime. The January 2022 political protests are resolved. Standard urban precautions in Almaty and Nur-Sultan. The 1330 tourist helpline operates in English. Nur-Sultan: extreme cold (-15°C in March) is the primary safety consideration.
5 days: Almaty only (Shymbulak + Charyn Canyon + Medeu + city). 8 days: Ayush's complete circuit with Nur-Sultan. 12 days: full Kazakhstan with Kolsai Lakes and Altyn Emel. Minimum meaningful: 5 days.

London layers 2,000 years of history — Roman walls, Tudor palaces, Victorian rail stations, and 21st-century glass towers — across 9 million people. It is the world's greatest free museum city, the most authentic Indian food outside Asia, and a theatre district unmatched anywhere on Earth.Explore guideExplore Iconic USA: New York Skylines, Canyons & Custom HolidayspopularUSAThe United States is not one destination — it is a continent's worth of them, from the vertical energy of New York to the desert theatre of the Grand Canyon and the Pacific light of California. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed hundreds of client itineraries through Britain — from London-only honeymooners to three-generation Scotland circuits — and the consistent surprise is how much of the UK's best experience costs nothing at all.
