Why visit

Why Visit Europe

Europe is the continent that invented the concept of travel as a cultural experience — and it has had 500 years of practice making that experience accessible. A single Schengen visa covers 27 countries, meaning an Indian traveller can stand at the Eiffel Tower on Monday, eat pasta in Rome on Wednesday, and watch a sunset over the Santorini caldera on Friday without applying for a second visa. The train network is so dense that most European capitals are within 4 hours of each other — Eurostar from Paris to London, Thalys from Amsterdam to Brussels, Frecciarossa from Rome to Florence — making multi-city itineraries logistically straightforward. The food culture ranges from the world's most Michelin-starred city (Paris) to the cheapest excellent meal in Europe (Prague Old Town market, €3 for a trdelník). The heritage scale is simply without equal: Rome's 2,800-year archaeological layer, Athens's 2,500-year-old Acropolis, Paris's 800-year-old Notre-Dame (reopened in December 2024 after restoration), Prague's 1,000-year-old castle complex, Dubrovnik's 14th-century walls. For Indian travellers, Europe consistently over-delivers — the fear of expense and language barriers is larger than the reality, particularly for confident first-time international travellers. Best time: April–June and September–October. One Schengen visa. Infinite continent.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Adriatic wallsMid-range stays

The 2km medieval city wall circuit (built 13th–17th century) walks above terracotta rooftops on one side and the Adriatic 15–20 metres below on the seaward side simultaneously. At 8 am, the first entry on a weekday in May, the walls carry 20–30 people. By noon, they carry 500. The old city — car-free, entirely medieval, the King's Landing stand-in for Game of Thrones across 8 seasons — is the most dramatic free walking circuit on the Adriatic coast.

London, United Kingdom

Multicultural cityMid-range stays

The British Museum, National Gallery, Victoria & Albert, Tate Modern, and Natural History Museum are all free — collectively, the greatest concentration of free museums in the world. West End theatre runs more productions per season than Broadway. The Indian community (9% of the UK population) means authentic Indian food at London prices rivalling Bengaluru. London requires a separate UK visa from the Schengen.

Amalfi Coast & Cinque Terre, Italy

Amalfi Coast & Cinque Terre, Italy

Italy's two most dramatic UNESCO coastlines — the Amalfi cliff road dropping 400m from mountain villages to turquoise sea (Positano's pastel-stacked houses the most reproduced coastal image in Italy), and Cinque Terre's five coloured villages along 18km of Ligurian coastline most beautifully seen from a boat at golden hour. Both are extraordinary in May and September. Both are dangerously crowded in July–August.

CanalsMid-range stays

The 17th-century canal ring (UNESCO World Heritage), the Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer's Milkmaid), the Van Gogh Museum, and Keukenhof (7 million tulips across 32 hectares, April–May) form the essential Amsterdam circuit. The city at 5:30 am in April — canals in perfect mirror reflection before the morning cyclists disturb the surface — is the most specifically photogenic single hour in Europe.

    Paris, France

Paris is the world's most visited city and it justifies every superlative. The Louvre contains 38,000 works across 72,735 sq metres — the world's largest art museum by area. Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened in December 2024 after a 5-year post-fire restoration, and the interior is more luminous than at any point in the last century. The Eiffel Tower at Trocadero at 9am carries 20 tourists; at noon it carries 400. Montmartre's Sacre-Coeur at 6am looks exactly like a 19th-century painting. The 6th and 7th arrondissement cafe-breakfast at 8am — croissant, cafe creme, Le Monde — is a specifically Parisian 30 minutes with no equivalent in any other city. Versailles on a Tuesday in October carries 200 visitors through the Hall of Mirrors; the same hall on a Saturday in August carries 2,000.

    Rome, Italy

Rome has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other city on Earth. The Colosseum was completed in 80 AD and still stands at 48 metres — the largest amphitheatre ever built. The Vatican Museums contain the Sistine Chapel ceiling (Michelangelo, 1512), the Raphael Rooms, and 70,000 works across 14km of galleries. The Pantheon (128 AD) has been in continuous use for 1,896 years — it is the best-preserved ancient Roman building in existence, and entry became ticketed only in 2023. Campo de Fiori market at 7am, Trastevere neighbourhood at 9pm, the Borghese Gallery's Bernini sculptures (must pre-book), and pasta cacio e pepe at a counter on a Tuesday afternoon — Rome delivers layers on return visits unavailable on first ones.

  • 03

    Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is the only city in the world with a building by the same architect still under construction 142 years after it was started. Gaudi's Sagrada Familia (begun 1882, with a completion target of 2033) is the most architecturally complex active construction project on Earth — and inside, the nave columns branch into a stone forest canopy that produces a quality of light no other building in Europe achieves. Park Guell, the Casa Batllo, and the Casa Mila form a Gaudi city trail unique in architectural history. El Born neighbourhood has the highest density of specifically excellent bars and restaurants in Barcelona. The Gothic Quarter at 7am — completely empty, golden light on 700-year-old stone — is the most dramatic free walking experience in the city.

  • 04

    Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam's 17th-century canal ring is UNESCO World Heritage — 165 canals, 1,281 bridges, and 17th-century merchant houses leaning at impossible angles over water that reflects the entire city at 5:30am before the morning cyclists disturb the surface. The Rijksmuseum holds Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Milkmaid in the same building — free on Thursday evenings (5-10pm). The Van Gogh Museum has the world's largest Van Gogh collection. Keukenhof (April-May) stages 7 million tulips across 32 hectares — the most concentrated floral display in Europe. The Jordaan neighbourhood's brown cafes (bruine kroegen) are the most specifically Amsterdam social institution.

    Prague, Czech Republic

Prague is the most completely preserved medieval city in Central Europe — the 1,000-year-old castle complex, the 14th-century Charles Bridge, the Jewish Quarter with its 800-year-old synagogues, and the astronomical clock (Orloj, 1410) all survived WWII bombing that destroyed most comparable European cities. It is also the most affordable major European capital — hotel, food, and activity costs run 40-60 percent below Paris, London, or Amsterdam at equivalent quality. The Czech Republic adopted the crown (CZK) not the Euro — budget comparisons sometimes mislead first-timers who assume EU membership means Euro pricing. Prague Castle at 7am, before the tour groups, is the most dramatically quiet major heritage site in Central Europe.

  • 06

    Santorini, Greece

Santorini's caldera formed from a volcanic eruption in approximately 1,600 BC — the most catastrophic single natural event in European recorded history, which also likely destroyed Minoan Crete. The white-and-blue cliff villages (Oia, Fira, Imerovigli) built on the rim of this caldera are among the world's most reproduced images. Oia sunset in September carries 200 spectators on the castle ruins; the same sunset in August carries 2,000. The Akrotiri Bronze Age site — the Pompeii of the Aegean, preserved under volcanic ash since 1,600 BC — is visited by fewer than 30 percent of Santorini tourists despite being one of the most significant archaeological sites in Europe.

    Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik's old city walls — built between the 13th and 17th centuries, 2km in circumference — walk above terracotta rooftops on one side and the Adriatic on the other simultaneously. At 8am first entry on a weekday in May, 20 people walk the full circuit. At noon in August, 500 share the same walls. The old city itself — car-free, entirely medieval, served by water taxis from the mainland — has been the King's Landing stand-in for Game of Thrones across 8 seasons. The Elafiti Islands day trip by local ferry gives Croatian island character at none of the Hvar price premium.

Swiss Alps — Zermatt and Interlaken

Switzerland concentrates more iconic mountain imagery per square kilometre than any other country. The Matterhorn at Zermatt (4,478m) is the most depicted mountain in European art history. Jungfraujoch at 3,454m is the highest railway station in Europe. The Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano crosses a UNESCO-listed viaduct and open spiral loops through the Alps in 4 hours. The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses, boats, and 500+ museums — the single best transport investment for a Switzerland circuit. Zermatt is car-free and the Matterhorn alpenglow at 5:30am from Bahnhofstrasse (free, no ticket required) turns the mountain from charcoal to burning crimson in under 3 minutes.

    London, United Kingdom

London requires a separate UK visa from the Schengen — and it is worth the additional application. The British Museum (free), the National Gallery (free), the Victoria and Albert (free), the Tate Modern (free), and the Natural History Museum (free) are collectively the greatest free museum concentration in the world. West End theatre produces more Tony Award equivalents per season than Broadway. The Indian community — the largest diaspora in the UK — means authentic Indian food at London prices that rival Bengaluru restaurants. Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Borough Market at 8am, the Thames Path from Tower Bridge to Greenwich, and a black cab ride through Mayfair after theatre — London is the most self-explaining city in Europe for Indian travellers.

Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre, Italy

Italy's two most dramatic coastlines are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the same country. The Amalfi Coast (50km of cliff road between Sorrento and Salerno) drops 400m from mountain villages to turquoise sea in continuous curves. Positano's pastel-stacked houses are Italy's most reproduced coastal image. Cinque Terre's five coloured villages (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore) connect by trail, local train, and ferry along 18km of Ligurian coastline — most beautifully seen from a boat at golden hour when the houses glow against the cliff. Both coastlines are dangerously crowded in July-August. Both are extraordinary in May and September.

Europe Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    4 tips
    • Exchange euros in India before departure — rates at European airport kiosks are 5–8% worse than Indian forex outlets. Zero-forex-fee Indian cards (Niyo Global, IDFC FIRST WOW, Federal Bank Scapia) save 2–3.5% on every euro transaction.

    • The Schengen visa (€90, ~₹8,388) covers 27 countries — calculate the per-country visa cost against single-country visa costs for destinations like Thailand or Singapore; Schengen is significantly more efficient per destination.

    • Supermarkets (Carrefour France, Lidl Germany, Albert Heijn Netherlands, Billa Austria, Kaufland Eastern Europe) sell the same cheese, wine, bread, and charcuterie as restaurant menus at 20–30% of restaurant pricing. One supermarket picnic per day in a European park saves significantly without sacrificing quality.

    • Book Eurostar, TGV, Frecciarossa, and Thalys at least 60 days ahead — advance tickets on high-speed trains can be 50–60% cheaper than walk-up fares on identical trains.

  • Safety

    4 tips
    • Pickpocketing is the primary tourist crime across Western Europe — Paris Metro Line 1, Rome's Colosseum area, Barcelona's La Rambla, and Amsterdam's Centraal Station are highest-risk zones. Front pockets, money belts, and bags worn against the body rather than on the back are the standard precautions.

    • European emergency number 112 works on any mobile network, including roaming Indian SIMs — police, ambulance, and fire. No need for country-specific numbers; 112 connects to the appropriate local service.

    • Travel insurance covering medical emergencies is essential — European healthcare is excellent, but non-EU visitors are charged full commercial rates. Medical repatriation to India can cost ₹10–25 lakh without insurance.

    • Schengen visa requires travel insurance with minimum €30,000 medical coverage — this is a visa condition, not optional. Buy from a SEBI-registered Indian insurer before applying.

  • European Emergency 112

    1 tip
European emergency number 112 works on ANY mobile network including roaming Indian SIMs — covers police + ambulance + fire across ALL 27 Schengen countries + UK + most non-Schengen Europe. NO need for country-specific numbers — 112 connects to appropriate local service. Operator speaks English. Translation services available. For non-emergency: Tourist Helpline numbers vary by country (France 17 police + 15 ambulance + 18 fire all also work). Travel insurance covering medical emergencies ESSENTIAL — European healthcare excellent but non-EU charged commercial rates. Medical repatriation to India INR 10-25 lakh without insurance.
  • Travel Insurance Visa Mandatory

    1 tip

Schengen visa REQUIRES travel insurance with MINIMUM EUR 30,000 medical coverage — this is a visa condition, NOT optional. Buy from a SEBI-registered Indian insurer BEFORE applying (insurer name + policy number required on visa application). Recommended: Tata AIG + Bajaj Allianz + ICICI Lombard + HDFC ERGO European Schengen policies. Coverage should include: medical emergency, medical repatriation, lost baggage, flight cancellation, theft, and accident.

  • Etiquette

    3 tips
    • In churches and cathedrals across Europe — Notre-Dame, St. Peter's Basilica, Sagrada Família, Duomo di Milano — shoulders and knees must be covered. Sleeveless tops and shorts are refused entry. Carry a scarf or light layer specifically for church visits.

    • In France, always greet with "Bonjour" before any interaction in a shop, restaurant, or while asking for directions. Launching into English without the greeting is considered rude and will noticeably affect service quality — this is genuinely culturally important and not just a pleasantry.

    • Tipping culture varies significantly by country — in France and Italy rounding up is appreciated but not expected; in Germany rounding up to the nearest euro is standard; in the UK 10–12% is expected at sit-down restaurants; in Eastern Europe tipping is discretionary. Never feel obligated to tip at self-service or fast-casual venues.

  • Scams & Pitfalls

    3 tips
    • Friendship bracelet scam operates near Sacré-Cœur (Paris), Trevi Fountain (Rome), and Sagrada Família (Barcelona) — someone ties a bracelet on your wrist, then demands payment. Do not extend your hand or stop walking.

    • Unofficial "skip-the-line" ticket sellers outside the Colosseum, Vatican, and Sagrada Família — all three require pre-booked official tickets; any seller approaching you at the physical entrance is either selling fake tickets or existing valid tickets at a markup. Book only at the official websites.

    • Taxi scams at Rome Fiumicino, Paris CDG, and Barcelona El Prat airports — only official taxis (Rome: white with meter, Paris: G7 or Taxis G7 app, Barcelona: black with yellow stripe) should be taken. Fixed airport rates exist at Rome (€50 to central Rome) — insist on this rate from official taxis.

Honest review

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Europe — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Schengen Visa

    Apply Once, Enter 27 Countries

  • Eurail Global Pass (pre-Europe purchase). For multi-country circuits 5+ train journeys, Eurail Global Pass pays for itself within 2-3 Eurostar and TGV journeys. 10-day from approx EUR 440 (INR 41,000) for adults. Purchase at eurail.com BEFORE arriving.

  • Open-Jaw Flights (Fly in Paris, Fly out Rome). Eliminates backtracking and allows linear itinerary. Additional airfare cost typically INR 3,000-8,000 recovered in saved train time and hotel nights. Most underused planning technique for European itineraries.

  • September-October Travel Window. Hotels 25-40 percent cheaper than July-August. Crowds at every major site 40-50 percent of peak density. Santorini September vs August: 200 vs 2,000 sunset viewers. Wine harvest France and Italy. Golden autumn Switzerland.

  • Pre-Booked Vatican Museums 8am Early Access. Available at museivaticani.va

Sistine Chapel at 8am carries 40 people, 11am carries 400. Difference complete. EUR 40 early access surcharge highest-return single ticket investment in Rome.

  • Switzerland Swiss Travel Pass. Covers unlimited trains, buses, boats, cable car discounts, 500 museums. 4-day pass approx CHF 244 (INR 29,670) 2nd class. For any 4+ day Switzerland circuit pays for itself on first 2 journeys.

  • UK Visa Separate from Schengen. Additional GBP 115 (approx INR 12,696) UK Standard Visitor Visa worth investment for London's concentration of FREE world-class museums (British Museum, National Gallery, V and A, Tate Modern, Natural History — all free).

  • Eastern Europe as Part of Any Circuit. Prague, Budapest, Krakow, Ljubljana at 40-60 percent of Western European daily costs. A good Prague hotel EUR 50-80/night vs Paris equivalent EUR 180-280. Heritage and food quality NOT inferior — different and often superior.

  • Notre-Dame Paris Reopened December 2024. 800-year cathedral reopened December 2024 after 5-year post-fire restoration. Interior more luminous than at any point in last century. FREE entry. Most consequential single 2024-2026 Europe reopening.

  • Champs-Elysees Paris Tourist Restaurants. Most marketed boulevard in Paris has least specifically Parisian food and highest prices.

Better moveWalk to 10th or 11th arrondissement for same meal quality at 40 percent less.

  • Europe in July-August Without Advance Booking. Every major European city operates at maximum capacity. Hotels 40-60 percent more than May/September. Jungfraujoch queues 2 hours. Santorini sunset 2,000 people.

Better moveBook 3-4 months ahead minimum.

  • Buying Eurail Pass for Single-Country Trip. Eurail Global Pass calculates positively for MULTI-country circuits. For Paris-only or Italy-only trips, point-to-point advance tickets at thetrainline.com 60 days ahead are cheaper by 30-50 percent.

  • Skipping Eastern Europe to Add More Western Days. Third day in Paris gives diminishing returns. Three days in Prague gives entirely different European cultural experience at 50 percent daily cost. Budapest thermal baths, Krakow Jewish Quarter — different not lesser.

  • Exchanging Currency at European Airport Kiosks. Airport bureaux de change apply rates 5-8 percent worse than Indian forex outlets OR zero-forex Indian cards. Exchange euros before departure from India OR use zero-forex card.

  • La Boqueria Barcelona as Genuine Market. Quality vendors systematically displaced by tourist-facing operations. Mercat de l'Abaceria Gracia and Mercat de Santa Caterina El Born are where Barcelona residents shop.

  • Gondola Venice at Tourist Rack Rate. Official rate EUR 90 for 30 minutes (approx INR 8,388). Traghetto (PUBLIC gondola crossing) carries passengers across Grand Canal for EUR 2 on SAME wooden boat. INR 186 not INR 8,388 for Grand Canal crossing.

  • Europe as First-Time International Trip in July-August. Version of Europe most people FEAR

expensive, crowded, language barriers — is specifically July-August. Same Europe in May or September: 30-40 percent cheaper, 40 percent less crowded.

  • Glacier Express Without Comparing Bernina Express. Glacier Express Zermatt-St. Moritz 7.5 hrs CHF 152. Bernina Express Chur-Tirano 4 hrs CHF 70 UNESCO-listed (Glacier not). Equally spectacular at half journey time and significantly lower cost.

  • Renting Car on Amalfi Coast July-August. Single-lane cliff road handles 4,000 vehicles per peak day — 15km journeys take 2 hours. Local SITA bus + ferry between towns + hired scooter from Amalfi all faster and cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Europe FAQ"

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Europe.

Apply through VFS Global at any of 15+ Indian city centres. Required documents: confirmed hotel bookings for all nights + return flight tickets + bank statements (3 months, minimum INR 3-5 lakh balance recommended) + travel insurance (minimum EUR 30,000 medical coverage) + salary certificate or ITR + leave letter from employer. Fee: EUR 90 (approx INR 8,388) + VFS service charge INR 2,690. Processing: 10-15 working days. Apply minimum 4 weeks before travel. ONE Schengen visa covers ALL 27 member states. Apply via country with most nights stayed (Schengen rule).
Budget (hostel + trains + supermarket meals + 2nd class transport): INR 1,20,000-1,80,000 per person. Mid-range (3-star hotels + restaurants + Eurail 2nd class): INR 2,00,000-3,00,000. Premium (4-star + fine dining + 1st class Eurail): INR 3,20,000-5,00,000. Luxury (5-star + Michelin + business class flights): INR 5,50,000-12,00,000+. These INCLUDE return flights from India. Eastern Europe circuits run 30-40 percent below these estimates. Exchange rates verified BookMyForex June 2026: 1 EUR = INR 93.20 + 1 GBP = INR 110.40 + 1 CHF = INR 121.60.
YES — for multi-country circuits covering 5+ train journeys. 10-day Global Pass adult approx EUR 440 (INR 41,000) covers unlimited journeys on 33 European rail networks. Calculate your specific route at eurail.com: if point-to-point advance tickets total more than the pass price, buy the pass. For single-country trips or itineraries with fewer than 4 long-distance trains, point-to-point advance booking at thetrainline.com is usually cheaper by 30-50 percent. Purchase at eurail.com BEFORE arriving in Europe. Reservation fees separately required for TGV (EUR 10) + Eurostar (EUR 30) + Frecciarossa (EUR 10) + ICE (EUR 4).
YES. The UK left the EU (Brexit) and is not part of the Schengen Area. A UK Standard Visitor Visa must be applied for SEPARATELY — fee: GBP 115 (approx INR 12,696) + VFS service charge. Processing: 3-8 weeks (longer than Schengen). Apply through VFS Global UK centres in India. The two visas can be applied for simultaneously (Schengen + UK) if the trip includes both regions. UK visa documentation requirements similar to Schengen: hotel bookings + return flights + bank statements + employment proof + travel insurance. Apply UK first if both visas needed — longer processing.
MAY is the top continent-wide recommendation — pleasant weather across all regions + pre-peak prices (20-30 percent below July-August) + every outdoor attraction and mountain railway fully operational + crowds moderate. September-October is the second-best window: 30-40 percent fewer crowds than peak + significantly lower hotel prices + grape harvest in wine regions + autumn colour in Switzerland and Eastern Europe. AVOID July-August (peak season + highest prices 40-60 percent above May + hottest temperatures 25-35C + Jungfraujoch 2-hour queues + Santorini sunset 2,000 spectators).
YES — Visa and Mastercard accepted almost universally across Europe. Carry EUR 150-200 in cash for markets + tips + smaller restaurants + Eastern European cities where card acceptance less consistent. Zero-forex-fee Indian cards (Niyo Global + IDFC FIRST WOW + Federal Bank Scapia) save 2-3.5 percent on every euro transaction vs standard Indian cards — apply 2-3 weeks before travel. Some Eastern European countries still use local currencies (Czech Crown CZK + Hungarian Forint HUF + Polish Zloty PLN). ATM withdrawals: zero-forex cards work without markup at most ATMs.
Eastern Europe is categorically the most affordable European travel region. Prague (Czech Republic, CZK) + Krakow (Poland, PLN) + Budapest (Hungary, HUF) + Bratislava (Slovakia, EUR) + Ljubljana (Slovenia, EUR) all offer medieval heritage and excellent food culture at 40-60 percent of Western European daily costs. A good Prague hotel costs EUR 50-80/night (approx INR 4,660-7,455) where comparable Paris costs EUR 180-280 (approx INR 16,775-26,095). The architecture + history + food quality are NOT inferior — they are different + often superior for specific experiences. Eastern Europe = highest value circuit extension available.
7 days covers 2 cities meaningfully (Paris + Rome, or London + Paris, or Amsterdam + Berlin). 10 days covers 3-4 cities (classic Western Europe circuit: Paris + Barcelona + Rome + Greece). 15 days covers 5-6 countries including Eastern Europe or Scandinavia (UK + France + Netherlands + Czech Republic + Switzerland + Italy + Greece). For a first-time Indian visitor to Europe, 10 days is the recommended MINIMUM to avoid the rushed-highlight-reel experience that produces 'I went to 8 cities in 7 days' itineraries. 14-day open-jaw flights (fly in Paris, out Rome) optimise itinerary linearity.
