- 01
Machu Picchu
The 15th-century Inca citadel, perched on a ridge above the Urubamba gorge and ringed by cloud forest, is Peru's icon and one of the New Seven Wonders. Seeing the terraces emerge from the morning mist is a genuinely moving experience.Explore Peru travel guide - 02
Cusco
The former Inca capital, where colonial churches sit on top of perfectly cut Inca foundations. Its plazas, San Blas lanes, and the San Pedro market make it the beating heart of any Peru trip — and the base for Machu Picchu.Explore Peru travel guide - 03
The Sacred Valley
The lush Urubamba valley between Cusco and Machu Picchu, dotted with Inca sites at Pisac and Ollantaytambo, Andean villages, and colourful markets. It sits lower than Cusco, so it's a smart place to acclimatise.Explore Peru travel guide - 04
Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)
A ridge of naturally striped mineral colours high in the Andes, reached on a demanding day hike above 5,000 m. The surreal bands of red, gold, and turquoise are unlike anywhere else.Explore Peru travel guide - 05

Peru: Travel Tips
Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.
Money
1 tipThe currency is the Peruvian Sol (S/). Carry a mix — cards work in cities and hotels, but markets, colectivos, small towns, and tips need cash. Withdraw soles from ATMs and keep small notes. Tipping is modest and appreciated: round up in restaurants (a service charge may already appear), and tip trekking guides, porters, and drivers, who often rely on it.Safety
1 tipPeru is rewarding but requires street sense: use app-based taxis (Uber/Cabify) rather than hailing on the street, keep valuables out of sight in Lima and crowded markets, and watch bags on buses. Altitude is the bigger risk for most visitors — acclimatise gradually, stay hydrated, go easy on alcohol on arrival, and seek medical help if headaches or breathlessness worsen.Etiquette
1 tipA little Spanish goes a long way — 'por favor' and 'gracias' are appreciated, as English is limited outside tourist hubs. Always ask before photographing people in traditional dress or at markets; many will pose for a small tip, and it's courteous to offer.Scams
1 tipFake or overpriced Machu Picchu/Inca Trail sellers — Book only through licensed operators and the official ticketing channels; permits are limited and counterfeit tickets exist. Unofficial airport and street taxis — Use the official airport taxi desks or a ride app; agree fares in advance if using a street cab. Currency and change tricks — Check notes for damage (worn notes are often refused), count change, and be wary of anyone offering unusually good street exchange rates.
What’s Genuinely Worth It in Peru — and What’s Overrated
An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.
A licensed guide at Machu Picchu
The ruins mean far more with expert context; the history is invisible without it.
Two acclimatisation days before trekking
Skimping here ruins trips; give your body time at altitude first.
The Vistadome train
The glass-roofed carriages turn the ride to Machu Picchu into part of the experience.
A day (and appetite) for Lima's food
The cuisine is a genuine world-class attraction, not a layover afterthought.
A Lake Titicaca island homestay
The most memorable, and most responsible, way to experience Andean culture.
Travel insurance with altitude cover
At 3,400 m+, medical issues are real; this is essential.
Booking Machu Picchu tickets & permits early
Slots and Inca Trail permits sell out months ahead in peak season.
Domestic flights to save time
Peru is huge; flying Lima-Cusco or Cusco-Amazon frees days for actual sightseeing.
Assuming you need a Peru visa when you don't
A valid US/UK/Schengen/Canada/Australia visa usually exempts you; check before paying for one.
Not carrying proof of visa eligibility
Airlines have denied Indian travellers boarding over documentation confusion; carry your qualifying visa and its entry stamp.
Rushing to altitude
Flying into Cusco and trekking the same day invites altitude sickness; acclimatise first.
Planning the Inca Trail in February
It's closed every February for maintenance; choose Salkantay or the train instead.
Under-budgeting Machu Picchu
Entry, train, bus, and guide add up; plan for it and book ahead.
Treating Lima as just an airport
You'd skip one of the world's great food cities; give it at least a day.
Ignoring the wet season's realities
Nov-Mar is beautiful and cheap but rainy; pack waterproofs and manage expectations on views.
Only carrying cash or only cards
Carry some soles for markets, taxis, and small towns; cards aren't accepted everywhere.

London layers 2,000 years of history — Roman walls, Tudor palaces, Victorian rail stations, and 21st-century glass towers — across 9 million people. It is the world's greatest free museum city, the most authentic Indian food outside Asia, and a theatre district unmatched anywhere on Earth.Explore guide
popularUSAThe United States is not one destination — it is a continent's worth of them, from the vertical energy of New York to the desert theatre of the Grand Canyon and the Pacific light of California. For Indian travellers it delivers the widest range of experiences a single visa unlocks: world cities, cinematic road trips, national parks, theme-park capitals, and some of the best Indian food outside India.
