About Dubai

Dubai is one of the seven emirates of the UAE — a city-state of 3.6 million people that has transformed from a fishing village in the 1960s to the world's most visited city. The transformation is architectural: Burj Khalifa (828m — the world's tallest building), Palm Jumeirah (the artificial island), the Dubai Mall (the world's largest by total area), the Burj Al Arab (the only 7-star hotel), and the Dubai Frame (a 150m picture frame with old Dubai on one side and new Dubai on the other).

Why visit

Why Visit Dubai

Dubai built the world's tallest building, the world's largest mall, and an indoor ski slope in the desert — in under 40 years. But the older city has texture too: Al Fahidi's wind-tower district preserves pre-oil Dubai, the Gold Souk has 380 shops, and Deira's spice market smells the same as it did a century ago. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi (90-min drive) is the most magnificent building in the Gulf. Indian community is 35% of Dubai's population — Hindi is widely spoken, and Indian food is at every price point. Visa on Arrival for Indian passport holders (select categories). Direct flights from all major Indian cities. The Museum of the Future, opened in 2022, is the most architecturally ambitious new building in the UAE — a toroidal structure covered in Arabic calligraphy that houses exhibits on future technologies. Best time: October–March. Summer (May–September) is 40–45°C — outdoor activity becomes impossible.

Winter Peak · November – March

18–28°C
What to expect

January finest — 22–26°C, perfect outdoor weather, Dubai Shopping Festival, Global Village in full operation. December–February: ideal. The only season when outdoor Dubai (desert safari, Burj Khalifa observation, JBR Beach, Marina Walk, Gold Souk evenings) is comfortable. Hotel prices spike Dec 25–Jan 2 and Feb 14 (Valentine's).

Conditions
  • All outdoor activities
  • Global Village
  • Shopping Festival

Spring · April

30–36°C

Manage with AC — indoor attractions fine

What to expect

Global Village closes end March. Outdoor activities still possible but uncomfortable mid-day. Hotel rates beginning to drop as peak winter season ends. Good last window for outdoor Dubai before extreme summer heat.

Conditions

Summer · May – September

Outdoor Dubai impossible — heatstroke risk for any sustained outdoor activity. Desert safari, Burj Khalifa observation deck, JBR Beach, and Marina Walk all compromised by extreme heat. Hotel deals 40–60% off but the experience is significantly reduced. Indoor malls (Dubai Mall, Mall of Emirates) and indoor attractions (Ski Dubai) remain fully functional.

Desert Safari

Desert Safari

Dunes at Sunset + Camp at Night

The 10 minutes of complete silence at the desert camp between the camel ride and the BBQ dinner. The entertainment (belly dancing and Tanoura spinning) is good. The dune bashing (45 minutes of steep descents in a 4WD) is genuinely thrilling. But the 10 silent desert minutes at 6 pm in January — the sky darkening, the temperature dropping, the campfires starting — is the specific Dubai experience that the Burj Khalifa does not offer. The Dubai desert safari operates from the Al Awir desert east of the city, 45 minutes from the hotel. January desert conditions: dune bashing in 26°C afternoon, 14°C at camp by 8 pm, Milky Way visible on clear nights. The standard safari includes dune bashing (mandatory), camel ride (15 min), sandboarding, henna, shisha, BBQ dinner (unlimited Arabic mezze + grills), and cultural performances.

Gold Souk

Gold Souk

The World's Largest Gold Market

Deira Gold Souk at 8:30 pm. 350 shops, 10+ tonnes of gold on display, the shopkeepers calling in Hindi (a large number of Malayali and Gujarati traders), and the narrow souk lanes. The gold price is not negotiable (it is the UAE government's fixed daily rate by weight and karat). The making charges are. Counter at 8%. Settle around 10–12%. Dubai Gold Souk (Deira district, Old Dubai) is the world's largest gold market — in operation since the 1940s. The souk sells 22-karat, 24-karat, and 18-karat gold jewellery at the UAE government's daily posted price per gram. Adjacent: the Spice Souk (saffron from Iran, frankincense from Oman, dried lemon, rose water, dried hibiscus) and the Perfume Souk (Arabic attars — concentrated oil perfumes).

Dubai Creek Dhow Cruise

Dubai Creek Dhow Cruise

Old Dubai at Night

Dubai Creek at 9 pm on a traditional wooden dhow. The Gold Souk lit up along the Deira bank. The Al Fahidi fort is visible on the Bur Dubai side. The cold January air on the open top deck and the warm lights of the creek waterfront. This 2-hour cruise is the most atmospheric AED 100 experience in Dubai — and the most specifically historical, because the Creek is where Dubai began. Dubai Creek (Khor Dubai) is the natural saltwater inlet that was the reason Dubai existed — a protected harbour for the pearl diving and fishing economy that preceded oil. The al Makhtoum family settled here in 1833. The traditional Abra (wooden rowing boat) and the larger dhow cruise boats use the same waterway.

Dubai Frame

Dubai Frame

Old and New Dubai in One View

The Dubai Frame glass floor Sky Bridge at 150m — old Dubai visible through the south glass wall (Deira, Karama, the low-rise buildings of 1970s Dubai), new Dubai visible through the north glass wall (Downtown, DIFC, Sheikh Zayed Road towers). Standing in the middle of the frame, you see both cities simultaneously. The metaphor is architectural: Dubai built a frame around its transformation and turned it into a tourist attraction. It is the most self-aware building I have visited. The Dubai Frame (completed 2018, Zabeel Park) — a 150m × 93m rectangular steel frame with two towers connected by a sky bridge and glass floor. Designed by Fernando Donis. The frame's orientation is deliberate: south faces historic Dubai, north faces modern Dubai. The glass floor Sky Bridge is genuinely vertiginous — 150m straight down through the transparent floor.

Palm Jumeirah

Palm Jumeirah

The Boardwalk at Sunrise

AtlantisLuxury stays

The Palm Boardwalk at 6:30 am on a January morning — the 11km circular promenade at sea level with the Dubai skyline across the water. Nobody is jogging yet. The Burj Al Arab is visible to the south, the Marina to the east, and the specific sound of the Arabian Gulf lapping the Palm's outer edge. Free. The finest free morning walk in Dubai. The Palm Jumeirah (completed 2006, built by Nakheel) — the artificial palm-shaped island constructed from 94 million cubic metres of sand and 7 million tonnes of rock. The Boardwalk runs along the outer crescent — 11km, open 24 hours, free access. The View at the Palm (Nakheel Mall, 52nd floor) gives the aerial view of the entire palm shape — the only place to see the palm from above, short of a helicopter.

Dubai Marina + JBR Beach

Dubai Marina + JBR Beach

The Modern Waterfront

Dubai Marina at 7 pm — the 3km man-made marina canal lined with 200 skyscrapers, the waterway full of private yachts, the waterfront restaurants beginning to fill. In January, outdoor dining at the Marina Walk is at its finest temperature of the year. The Marina is what Dubai chose to build when it decided to build a city for people who wanted to live at a marina. Dubai Marina (completed 2003 onwards) is a 3.5km artificial canal city with 200 skyscrapers surrounding a navigable waterway. The Marina Walk (public promenade, 7km) and The Walk at JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence — 1.7km of outdoor shopping and dining) together form the most liveable outdoor area in Dubai. JBR Beach is free, with sunbeds for hire. January: beach temperature and sea conditions are ideal.

Global Village

Global Village

90 Countries in One Night

Global Village on a January Friday at 8 pm. India Pavilion (2 floors of handicrafts, street food, and Bollywood music) next to the Pakistan Pavilion (embroidery, dry fruit, qawwali), next to the Egypt Pavilion (spices, perfume, shisha), next to the Africa section. 90 countries in 1.6 sq km of outdoor park, and the specific multicultural atmosphere that only Dubai can produce, because it has 200+ nationalities in its population. Global Village (20+ seasons, Dubailand area) is the world's largest cultural, entertainment, and shopping festival — 90+ country pavilions, each built as a replica landmark of that nation, selling country-specific products, food, and entertainment. Attendance exceeds 9 million visitors per season. January: peak season — all pavilions operational, the weather perfect for the outdoor park at night.

Dubai Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    2 tips
    • The Dubai Metro (NOL card) covers the airport to Downtown, Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah monorail connection, and Marina — a ₹50 card top-up covers most tourist journeys at 10–15% of taxi cost for identical routes.

    • Dubai Duty Free is genuinely among the world's cheapest for perfume, electronics, and liquor — compare prices before purchasing and note that Indian customs allow a ₹50,000 duty-free limit with a 2L alcohol max.

  • Safety

    2 tips
    • Public displays of affection are illegal in the UAE — kissing, embracing, or holding hands in public can result in arrest and deportation; this applies to married couples equally.

    • Sharing or posting social media content critical of the UAE government, royal family, or religion can result in criminal prosecution under UAE cybercrime laws — this has resulted in tourist arrests.

    • During Ramadan, eating, drinking, or smoking in public spaces during daylight hours is illegal for everyone, including non-Muslims — restaurants are closed or curtained; show visible restraint even when fasting is not required of you.

    • Dress conservatively outside malls and beach areas — Dubai's newer tourist zones are permissive, but traditional areas like Deira, Al Fahidi, and Gold Souk expect covered shoulders and knees for women.

  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
    • Unofficial gold dealers near the Gold Souk claim "below market" prices for 24K gold — Dubai gold prices are published daily and fixed; any deal significantly below the published daily rate involves underweight or impure gold.

    • Desert safari touts near Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa sell overpriced packages at inflated commissions — book directly with Platinum Heritage, Arabian Adventures, or similar licensed operators; prices are 20–40% lower.

    • Free "VIP club entry" offers near JBR Walk and DIFC from street promoters include mandatory drink minimums of AED 200–300+ per person — clarify all charges before agreeing.

Honest review

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Dubai — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Burj Khalifa sunset slot

World's highest view at finest light. City below in gold. Book in advance.

  • Desert Safari

Dune bashing + camel + sunset + BBQ camp + stars. Only Dubai experience that has nothing to do with a building.

  • Dubai Creek Abra

5 minutes of most historically authentic Dubai transport. Costs less than a samosa.

  • Gold Souk at 8 pm

10+ tonnes of gold in 350 shops. Making charges lower than India. Saffron cheaper than India.

  • Dubai Frame

Old Dubai + new Dubai in one simultaneous view. Best value observation experience in Dubai.

  • Dubai Fountain

900 jets, 6,600 lights, 500m, every 30 min from 6pm. Best from Souk Al Bahar bridge — free.

  • Al Mallah Shawarma

Dubai's most legendary chicken shawarma since 1979. The one thing in Dubai cheaper than India.

  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Most architecturally extraordinary building in UAE. Free. 1.5 hrs from Dubai.

  • Buying Burj Khalifa tickets at the door

Same-day tickets cost AED 100–200 more than advance. burjkhalifa.ae takes 2 minutes.

  • Booking desert safari through the hotel

Hotels mark up 2–3x. Klook and GetYourGuide have same operators at 30–40% lower price.

  • Exchanging money at Dubai airport

Airport rates 3–5% worse than Deira/Karama money changers. Withdraw from ATM post-immigration for best rate.

  • Not visiting Old Dubai

Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Al Fahidi, Creek are what Dubai was before skyscrapers. More interesting than Dubai Mall and free.

  • Dubai in summer (May

September) — 42–48°C. Outdoor Dubai genuinely impossible. Desert safari, Burj Khalifa observation, JBR Beach, Marina all compromised.

  • Paying for Dubai Fountain views at a restaurant

Souk Al Bahar bridge (free standing area) gives same view as AED 300 minimum-spend restaurant.

  • Type G plug assumption

Dubai uses British 3-pin Type G sockets. Indian plugs (Type D round pin) do not fit.

Better moveBuy Type G adapter before departure.

  • Visiting Global Village on a weekday afternoon

Friday and Saturday evenings are correct experience — full performances, attendance, food stalls.

It is 44 countries with 24 official languages, 50 UNESCO-listed cities, and a train network that takes you from the Eiffel Tower to the Colosseum without a single flight. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed over 200 client itineraries across Europe and the most consistent feedback is that Europe delivers more than expected and less than brochure fears suggest. For Indian travellers, ONE Schengen visa opens 27 countries. This guide covers every visa step, every exchange rate, and every planning decision.Explore guideExperience Regal London: Big Ben, Royal Palaces & Custom GetawayspopularLondonVikas Rana is an Atravelq destination expert who visited London in March 2022 during early spring — daffodils in Hyde Park, the last cool grey days before shoulder-season prices lifted, and museums operating at their most accessible visitor density of the year. London layers 2,000 years of history — Roman walls, Tudor palaces, Victorian rail stations, and 21st-century glass towers — across 9 million people. It is the world's greatest free museum city, the most authentic Indian food outside Asia, and a theatre district unmatched anywhere on Earth.Explore guideExplore Iconic USA: New York Skylines, Canyons & Custom HolidayspopularUSAThe United States is not one destination — it is a continent's worth of them, from the vertical energy of New York to the desert theatre of the Grand Canyon and the Pacific light of California. For Indian travellers it delivers the widest range of experiences a single visa unlocks: world cities, cinematic road trips, national parks, theme-park capitals, and some of the best Indian food outside India. Pick one coast per trip, and the 10-year B1/B2 visa turns a once-in-a-lifetime journey into a decade of returns.Explore guideUnited KingdompopularUnited KingdomThe United Kingdom packs four nations, 33 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the world's greatest concentration of free museums, and a 1,000-year royal heritage into an island smaller than Madhya Pradesh. The Atravelq CMS Editorial Team has routed hundreds of client itineraries through Britain — from London-only honeymooners to three-generation Scotland circuits — and the consistent surprise is how much of the UK's best experience costs nothing at all. English everywhere, the largest Indian diaspora in Europe, and a rail network that connects London to Edinburgh faster than Delhi to Jaipur.Explore guideExperience Wild South Africa: Kruger Big Five & Custom SafarisnewSouth AfricaSouth Africa is where a single trip delivers the Big Five safari, a UNESCO-listed wine valley, one of the world's greatest coastal drives, a beach city under a flat-topped mountain, and a Soweto township history that changed the course of 20th-century politics. No African country packs more contrasting landscapes, no wildlife destination comes closer to guaranteeing the lion-and-elephant combination, and no Indian traveller leaves without the specific awareness that Mahatma Gandhi's political life began in Durban in 1893 — on this soil.Explore guideExplore Historic Great Britain: London, Scottish Highlands & Tailored TripspopularGreat BritainGreat Britain packs a startling amount into one compact island — the world-city buzz of London, the castles and lochs of Scotland, the storybook villages of the Cotswolds, and the peaks of Wales, all linked by one of the planet's best rail networks. For Indian travellers it's uniquely easy: everyone speaks English, they drive on the left just like home, and the food scene runs from Michelin stars to the best Indian restaurants outside India. Get the UK visitor visa sorted early, and a week or two here delivers history, royalty, film locations, and scenery in a single hassle-free trip.Explore guideUnveil Ancient Peru: Machu Picchu Citadel, Andes & Custom TrekstrendingPeruPeru is South America's headline act — the misty ruins of Machu Picchu, the Inca stonework of Cusco, the reed islands of Lake Titicaca, and a food scene that has made Lima one of the world's great eating cities. For Indian travellers it is a genuine bucket-list journey: far to reach, but astonishing in reward, and surprisingly accessible if you already hold a US, UK, or Schengen visa. Give yourself time to acclimatise to the Andes, plan around the dry season, and Peru delivers history, adventure, and flavour on a scale few countries can match.Explore guideUnveil Ancient Egypt: Pyramids of Giza, Nile Cruises & Bespoke ToursnewEgyptEgypt is the only destination on Earth where you stand at 6am in front of a 4,500-year-old monument built by 100,000 workers over 20 years — and then drive 600km south to find 63 underground royal tombs, a temple complex larger than Vatican City, and a river that has sustained civilisation longer than any other geographic feature in human history. The e-Visa takes 3-5 days. The Pyramids have been waiting 4,500 years.Explore guideDiscover Classic Central Europe: Prague, Vienna, Budapest & Custom TourstrendingCentral EuropeCentral Europe is where the continent keeps its best-value secrets — imperial capitals, medieval old towns, thermal baths, alpine lakes and the Adriatic coast, all inside one Schengen visa and at a fraction of Western Europe's daily costs. Six countries — Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Poland — one visa, one connected rail network, and this guide covers every planning decision in between.Explore guideExperience Romantic Paris: Seine Cruises, Art & Tailored City BreakshoneymoonParisParis is the most visited city on Earth and the most misunderstood — travellers arrive for the Eiffel Tower and leave having discovered that the real city lives in its morning bakeries, its riverbanks at dusk and its neighbourhood squares. I am Anmol Verma, and after planning hundreds of Paris itineraries for Indian travellers, my core advice has never changed: Paris rewards the traveller who walks, wakes early and sits down often.Explore guideindiatrendingIndiaindiaExplore guide
