About Croatia

Croatia is a crescent-shaped country on eastern Adriatic coast: interior (Zagreb, Plitvice Lakes, Slavonia) and Dalmatian Coast (Split, Dubrovnik, islands — Brač, Hvar, Korčula, Vis, Mljet). Coastline 5,835km (including islands), UNESCO sites at Dubrovnik, Split, Plitvice Lakes, Trogir, Šibenik, Stari Grad on Hvar, Porec, and most dramatic city walls in the world (Dubrovnik city walls 1,940m perimeter). August 2025 circuit: Dubrovnik (3 nights — Old City walls 7am, Game of Thrones, Lokrum), Split (2 nights — Diocletian's Palace underground, Riva), island hopping by catamaran (Split → Hvar → Korčula → Dubrovnik), Hvar (2 nights — Pakleni Islands), Korčula (1 night), Krka National Park (day trip), Zadar (Sea Organ sunset).

Key Features of Croatia

  • Dubrovnik Old City Walls7am Walk1,940m perimeter, 2m wide walkDubrovnik walls at 7am — The 1.9km limestone fortification walk with 50 visitors before the cruise ships arrive at 9:30am. At 10am: 2,000. The timing is the entire Dubrovnik decision.
  • Plitvice Lakes at first entryThe UNESCO cascade lake system on the wooden boardwalks at 7am with 30 visitors before the tour buses deliver 2,000 by 10am. Book np-plitvicka-jezera.hr weeks ahead.
  • Korčula Moreška sword danceThe Thursday evening performance of the 500-year-old choreographed sword battle for a princess is the most specifically Dalmatian cultural experience. Real swords, real choreography, 6 months of rehearsal per performer.
  • Krka National Park swimmingThe only major Croatian national park where swimming is permitted — at the Skradinski Buk travertine cascades in the August warmth. Plitvice prohibits swimming; Krka actively welcomes it.
Why visit

Why Visit Croatia

Why Croatia in August 2026? August gives Croatia at its most complete: the Adriatic at 26-28°C, the island catamarans at full frequency, the Pakleni Islands accessible by water taxi from Hvar, the Plitvice Lakes turquoise at maximum saturation, and the specific evening culture of the Dalmatian coast that the cold months cannot replicate. The 7am strategy is essential for August: the Dubrovnik walls at 7am give the walls before the cruise ship passengers; the Plitvice 7am slot gives the lakes before the afternoon crowd.

I was on the Dubrovnik city walls at 7:05am on August 14, 2025. The walls open at 7am in August — I was the fifth person through the Pile Gate entry. The walk from the Pile Gate counterclockwise (the most photographed section of the walls — the Minčeta Tower at the north, the view of the Old City below on one side and the Adriatic on the other): at 7:15am, the Old City below was in the last of the overnight shadow, the terracotta rooftops visible between the shadows. By 7:35am: the sun cleared the Srđ hill to the east and the rooftops turned orange simultaneously. At 7:05am on the walls: 50 other visitors. At 10am on the walls (when I returned for a second section): the Minčeta Tower area had 400 visitors in the same 200m section. The same walls. The same view. The same entry ticket. Three hours difference.

The Plitvice Lakes at 7am on August 16: the first entry slot, the Upper Lakes in the morning mist (the mist rises from the lake surface at dawn when the lake water is warmer than the air — the specific August Plitvice dawn mist that evaporates by 9am). At 7am: the boardwalk through the Upper Lakes with 30 other visitors. The water turquoise-emerald in the morning light. By 10am: the boardwalk with 800 visitors and the colour flattened by the noon sun. The Plitvice 7am entry is the single most important Croatia timing decision after the Dubrovnik wall 7am.

May-June — Top Pick Value · May – June

The finest Croatia window — warm (22-28°C), low humidity, fewer tourists (50-60% of August), significantly cheaper hotels, Plitvice available without August booking struggle

May: wildflowers

What to expect

June: warm sea beginning, lavender in Hvar pre-peak. Pre-summer pricing 40-50% below August. All catamarans operational. Adriatic warming to swimmable temperatures by late June. Best balance of weather + price + crowd levels for Indian travellers.

Summer Peak · July – August

Maximum everything — warmest sea (26-28°C), maximum energy in Hvar, maximum crowd at all major sites, maximum prices
What to expect

7am strategy essential: Dubrovnik walls 7am, Plitvice 7am first entry. August Dubrovnik Old City at 9:30am-4pm = cruise ship passenger window (5,000 daily). Hvar Town main square at 11am-3pm = day-tripper peak. Manageable with strict morning + evening strategy. Book hotels 3-4 months ahead. Catamarans 3-5 days ahead.

September-October — Top Pick Value · September – October

Post-summer — warm sea still (23-25°C), summer crowd 40% reduced, autumn light on Adriatic
What to expect

September = peak weather without August prices. October: warm sea continuing, autumn light on limestone walls. Some ferry frequencies reducing in October but main island connections operational. Excellent value tier — September gives the August experience at May prices.

Off-Peak · November – April

10-18°C cool to cold

Off-season

What to expect

Some attractions limited hours. Ferry frequency reduced (some island connections suspended). Very cheap accommodation. Atmospheric Plitvice in snow extraordinary photography. Easter wildflowers and Christmas markets in Zagreb give specific off-season character. For non-summer travellers wanting cultural depth without crowds: November and April are surprisingly excellent value windows.

Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik

The Pearl of the Adriatic

HoneymoonersMid-range stays
Dubrovnik (walled city on southern Dalmatian coast — UNESCO Old City, most photographed urban landscape in Croatia) has city walls (1,940m walkable perimeter — most intact medieval city walls in Europe), Stradun (limestone-paved main street 300m long, pale grey limestone worn smooth by 600 years foot traffic), Old Town architecture (Church of St. Blaise, Rector's Palace, Franciscan Monastery 14th-century pharmacy), and Game of Thrones filming locations (King's Landing filmed entirely in Dubrovnik). Dubrovnik walls at 7am (€35 ≈ ₹3,115): counterclockwise walk gives Minčeta Tower first (most dramatically elevated point, view of entire Old City below and Adriatic to south), then sea-facing southern section (Bokar Fortress, waves directly below wall), then inner-city view of red-tiled rooftops from above. At 7am August: 50 other visitors. At 10am: 2,000.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes (UNESCO) has 16 terraced lakes connected by 90 waterfalls: Upper Lakes (8 upper terraced lakes, most dramatically elevated, boardwalks passing over lakes between travertine barriers) and Lower Lakes (8 lower lakes, most visited section, largest being Novakovića Brlog, most spectacular waterfall Veliki Slap at 78m — highest waterfall in Croatia). Colour: specific emerald-turquoise produced by calcium carbonate dissolved in Bijela and Crna Rijeka rivers — calcite precipitating on mosses creating travertine barriers. Visible from boardwalks; rocks at lake bottom visible at 10- 15 m depth. Book online minimum 2 weeks ahead in August. The first entry slot (7 am, Route C) offers lakes in dawn mist.

Split

Split

Roman Palace You Can Sleep Inside

First-timersBudget stays
Split (second-largest city in Croatia, 220,000 people — Dalmatian capital, main hub for island hopping, ferry port for all island connections) has Diocletian's Palace (Roman emperor's retirement palace, begun 295 AD, completed 305 AD — palace covering 31,000 sq m, current Old City of Split entirely within original palace walls). Peristyle (central Roman courtyard, columns of eastern peristyle colonnade, Cathedral of Saint Domnius built in Emperor's mausoleum, baptistery built in temple of Jupiter — world's most complete Roman-to-Christian architectural conversion in functioning urban setting). Underground chambers (Vestibul, Substructures — basement of palace, complete architectural plan of palace above visible in below-ground structure). Golden Gate (northern main gate, statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović, rubbing thumb brings luck — thumb polished gold by 70 years of tourist contact).

Hvar Island

Hvar Island

Lavender + Adriatic + Nightlife

Hvar (island of 11,103 permanent residents, accessible by catamaran from Split in 60 minutes — most popular island on Dalmatian coast, most glamorous party destination in Croatia) has three distinct experiences: Hvar Town (main town on western coast — 13th-century loggia on main square, Venetian fortress above town, harbour with luxury superyachts), Pakleni Islands (12 small islands accessible by water taxi from Hvar Town harbour — forested coves, swimming beaches, Palmižana restaurant in Palmižana cove), island interior (lavender fields on Hvar plateau, Stari Grad plain, lavender in bloom June-July still fragrant in August, dried lavender at every Hvar market). Hvar Town at 9pm August: main square with 13th-century loggia as background, tables extending across square, specifically Mediterranean evening energy.

Krka National Park

Krka National Park

Swimming at Waterfalls

Krka National Park (near Šibenik, 80km north of Split — Krka River canyon system, Skradinski Buk waterfall — most visited section, accessible by boat from Skradin village or by entrance road from Šibenik) differs from Plitvice in specific swimming permission at Krka (Skradinski Buk area — water temperature 22-24°C in August, turquoise water accessible for swimming in designated areas around main waterfall platform). 17m-high Skradinski Buk waterfall (main waterfall, 7-tiered cascade, boardwalk surrounding it) viewable from walkway circuit (90 minutes), swimming area accessible from designated bathing zone adjacent to walkway. August Krka swim: waterfall visible 50m away, turquoise water above travertine at 22°C, specific experience of swimming in UNESCO National Park waterfall setting — available at Krka but not at Plitvice.

Zadar

Zadar

Sea Organ and World's Best Sunset

Zadar (historic capital of Dalmatia, 165km north of Split — UNESCO Old Town on peninsula, Roman Forum, Pre-Romanesque church of St. Donatus, specific modern additions of Sea Organ and Sun Salutation) gives most specifically experiential Croatian city: Sea Organ (sound — chord that changes with every wave, audible as you approach steps, full harmonic chord audible when you sit directly on steps above pipe apertures), Sun Salutation (illumination beginning at sunset and intensifying as sky darkens), Zadar sunset (Hitchcock described as 'most beautiful in the world' — sun setting over Zadar channel, Adriatic islands visible to west, sky turning orange above Pašman and Ugljan islands). Zadar sunset in August: at 8pm sky begins colour change, Sea Organ already active with wave action, Zadar waterfront filling for collective sunset watching tradition.

Korčula

Marco Polo's Island

BudgetBudget stays
Korčula (island accessible from Hvar by catamaran 60 minutes, or from Split by catamaran 3 hours — walled medieval town at northeastern tip of island, claimed birthplace of Marco Polo, one of best-preserved medieval walled towns on Adriatic) has Korčula Old Town (herringbone street plan — narrow lanes at angles to central street designed to block bura wind in winter and summer sun in summer), Cathedral of St. Mark (15th-century cathedral on main square, Tintoretto painting inside), Marco Polo Museum (house claimed as Marco Polo's birthplace — historical claim disputed, but museum entertaining), and Moreška sword dance (traditional Korčula folk dance performed every Thursday evening in square beside Revelin Tower — most specifically Korčula cultural event). Real swords in 12 vs 12 dancers, 45-minute performance.

Rovinj

Rovinj

Istrian Dream

Rovinj (Istrian peninsula town, 290km north of Split — most photogenic small town in Croatia, island-town feel from old fishing quarter on peninsula) gives most specifically photogenic Croatian city: Church of St. Euphemia (17th-century Baroque church on hilltop, copper statue of St. Euphemia on bell tower visible from harbour — bell tower based on Venetian campanile design), old town lanes (cobblestone streets rising to church, art galleries and ceramic studios in ground-floor spaces), and Rovinj harbour at sunrise (fishing boats returning from night catch, market beginning, old town silhouette visible across harbour in morning light). Most Indian travellers skip Istria for the more famous Dalmatian sites — Rovinj is the specific Istrian addition that elevates 14-day Croatia circuits.

NoteLuxury 10 days: ₹5,50,000+ per person. Villa Dubrovnik + private yacht + Hvar luxury villa. Most aspirational Croatia tier — Adriatic coast luxury comparable to Italian Riviera at slightly more accessible pricing.

Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    4 tips
Croatia Schengen visa — €80/adult (≈ ₹7,120) + VFS service charge. Apply at vfsglobal.com (Croatian Embassy processing). Documents: passport (6 months validity), application form, passport photos, hotel bookings (all nights), return tickets, bank statements (6 months), income proof (ITR + salary slips), travel insurance (min €30,000). Processing 15-30 working days. Apply 6-8 weeks before. Croatia Schengen covers all 27 Schengen countries.
1 EUR = ₹89 · Croatia uses Euro since January 1, 2023 (NOT Kuna — ignore any pre-2023 price information). Cards accepted everywhere. Carry €100-200 cash for smaller konobas, market purchases, and water taxis. August pricing: Croatia in August 50-80% more expensive than May or October — same walls, same lakes, same Adriatic. May and September give same Croatia at significantly lower prices. If August is fixed: book 3-4 months ahead.
Catamaran booking — jadrolinija.hr and krilo.hr accept online booking. August catamarans fill quickly — book each leg 3-5 days ahead. Dubrovnik → island direction more limited than Split direction — book return Dubrovnik catamaran as early as possible. Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) 20km south of Old City. Taxi €35-40 (≈ ₹3,115-3,560). Bus €3 (≈ ₹267) to Old City Pile Gate. Bus is most economical.
Plitvice + Krka online bookings — buy both before flying: np-plitvicka-jezera.hr and np-krka.hr. August is the most sold-out month. Both parks have limited daily entry — online booking gives specific entry slot. Tipping in Croatia: rounding up at konobas (5-10%). Tipping appreciated but not as mandatory as in UK. At konobas with handwritten menus and local clientele: rounding up to nearest €5 is standard.
  • Safety

    3 tips
Croatia is very safe — consistently one of safest EU countries for tourists. Standard urban precautions in Old City tourist areas (Dubrovnik peak season pickpocket activity in narrow Stradun side lanes). Adriatic sea safety: Adriatic has strong currents at certain points (particularly around headlands and island passages). Swim only in designated beach areas. Sea urchins on rocky sections: wear swim shoes for rocky entry points.
August heat management — 33-36°C in Dubrovnik in August. Do all outdoor walking before 11am and after 5pm. Plitvice Lakes shaded trail manageable in August afternoon, but Dubrovnik walls exposed sections very hot 10am-4pm. Carry 2L of water. Bura wind: cold, dry, northeast wind of Adriatic. Can cause rough sea conditions on some days in August (less common than October-March but possible). If catamaran cancelled due to bura: plan for 1 extra day flexibility in island-hopping section.
Medical access — Croatia has EU-standard hospital infrastructure. EHIC card covers EU country residents; Indian visitors require travel insurance with medical coverage. Dubrovnik General Hospital and Split University Hospital are primary facilities. Schengen visa requirement: min €30,000 medical travel insurance — keep policy documents with you in Croatia.
  • Etiquette

    2 tips
Dubrovnik Old City residential respect — Dubrovnik Old City inhabited by 1,400 residents (down from 6,000 in 1991 as tourist accommodation replaced residential properties). Residents ask for quiet in residential lanes from 10pm. Stradun tourist area active until midnight — residential lanes east of Stradun are quiet-zone requested after 10pm. Church photography: Croatian Catholic churches allow photography in nave but NOT during mass. Phone night mode better than flash (prohibited).
Konoba vs restaurant — konoba (traditional Croatian coastal restaurant) has handwritten menus on blackboard, plastic chairs, local wine in ceramic jugs, fish from morning's catch. Restaurant with printed English menu and tablecloths serves tourist-oriented food. Konoba always correct choice. Market bargaining: Dalmatian market (Dolac in Zagreb, Gundulić Square in Dubrovnik, Split market below palace) — fresh produce at fixed prices. Handicrafts and lavender products: mild bargaining accepted (10-15% below asking price).
  • Scams and Pitfalls

    3 tips
Dubrovnik taxi overcharging — taxis outside Pile Gate of Dubrovnik Old City are some of most expensive in Croatia (captive tourist market at main tourist entry). Use Bolt (ride-hailing app) for all Dubrovnik taxi rides — meter automatic and price shown before booking. 'Verified accommodation' in Old City Dubrovnik: some accommodation advertised as 'inside Old City' actually in Lapad or Gruz, 3km from Old City. Confirm specific address against Google Maps before booking.
Plitvice route confusion — Plitvice Lakes have multiple entry points and multiple routes. Online booking must match specific entry point (Entrance 1 for Lower Lakes entry, Entrance 2 for Upper Lakes entry). Route C (full circuit) available from Entrance 2. Arriving at wrong entrance invalidates ticket for that route. Read booking confirmation carefully. Catamaran day-trip from Split to Hvar: arrives in Hvar Town at 11am with 500 other day-trippers and returns by 6pm. This is NOT the Hvar experience — this is the crowd experience. Stay overnight in Hvar.
August Dubrovnik cruise ship timing — cruise ships dock at Dubrovnik cruise terminal (Gruž harbour, 3km from Old City) at 8am and passengers bussed to Pile Gate by 9:30am. Specific crowd surge at Dubrovnik Old City at 9:30am-4pm = cruise ship passenger window. Morning (7-9:30am) and evening (after 5pm, when cruise passengers bussed back) give Old City with resident and hotel-guest visitors only. Plan Dubrovnik activities around this window.

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Croatia — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Dubrovnik city walls 7am

Most intact medieval city walls in Europe. 50 visitors at 7am vs 2,000 at 10am. Rooftops turning orange at 7:35am. Single most important Croatia timing decision.

  • Plitvice Lakes 7am first entry

16 interconnected turquoise-emerald lakes in dawn mist. 30 visitors at 7am vs 800 at 11am. Specific colour from Plitvice mineral content. Book online minimum 2 weeks ahead.

  • Krka National Park swim

Only UNESCO national park waterfall in Croatia where swimming is permitted. 17m Skradinski Buk visible while swimming. Rainbow in spray at 10am.

  • Zadar Sea Organ at sunset (Free)

World's first sea organ — chord changes with every wave. 8pm August sunset. Sun Salutation illumination beginning after dark. Free. Architecture of sound applied to Adriatic waves.

  • Split → Dubrovnik catamaran island-hopping

Adriatic by sea. Islands appearing and receding. Deck wind at 26°C. Catamaran arriving at each island from water. Most specifically Croatian travel experience.

  • Hvar Pakleni Islands 9am water taxi

Forested coves with turquoise Adriatic. Palmižana restaurant. 9am cove with 20 swimmers vs 2pm 100. Most beautiful Adriatic swimming of Croatian coast.

  • Korčula Moreška Sword Dance Thursday

Real swords. 45 minutes. Most specifically Croatian cultural performance accessible on island-hopping route. Plan Thursday Korčula stop.

  • Diocletian's Palace underground 8am

Basement of Roman emperor's retirement palace. Complete palace plan visible underground. Moment of understanding that Diocletian's dining room was directly above.

  • Dubrovnik Srđ cable car at sunset

Panoramic Dubrovnik Old City + Elaphiti Islands view from 412m above the city. Sunset cable car gives Old City in evening light, Adriatic in sunset, islands in last light. Most complete Dubrovnik aerial.

  • Stari Grad UNESCO Plain on Hvar (Free)

Ancient Greek field system on Hvar Island, UNESCO 2008, 2,400-year-old continuous cultivation of grapes and olives in same plot boundaries. Most specifically continuous European agricultural heritage. Walk through Stari Grad town to see fields.

  • Dubrovnik city walls after 9am in August

Cruise ships dock at 8:30am and 5,000 daily cruise passengers arrive in Old City at 9:30-10am. Walls at 10am are human wall-to-wall in narrow sections (2m wide — two people walking abreast fills width). 7am entry gives walls before cruise ship arrival. Single most important Croatia August strategy.

  • Plitvice Lakes without advance online booking in August

Plitvice Lakes tickets for August sell out 1-2 weeks ahead. Arriving at entrance without ticket in August: you will be turned away.

Better moveBook online at np-plitvicka-jezera.hr minimum 2 weeks ahead. 7am entry slot: also sells out — book specifically.

  • Hvar Town at 11am (when Split day-trippers arrive)

Split → Hvar day-trip boat arrives in Hvar Town at 11am simultaneously with 500 other day-trippers. Hvar Town main square at 11am in August: maximum density. Staying overnight in Hvar gives town from 8am (before day-trippers) and from 7pm (after day-trip boats return to Split at 5pm).

  • August hotel booking without 3-4 months advance

Croatian hotels in August sell out — particularly Dubrovnik (Old City accommodation limited to 500-year-old buildings within walls) and Hvar Town. August Dubrovnik Old City booking requires 3-4 months ahead. August Hvar Town: 2-3 months. Booking in June for August: you will get what is left.

  • Island hopping without checking catamaran schedules

Catamaran services (Jadrolinija + Krilo) operate on fixed summer schedules that do not always align with traveller's preferred island departure time.

Better moveSplit → Hvar catamaran runs at specific hours. Plan island stops around catamaran schedule, not the other way around.

  • Mixing up old Kuna and current Croatia currency

Croatia switched from Croatian Kuna (HRK) to Euro (€) on January 1, 2023. Any Croatia content from before 2023 (blogs, older guidebooks) will show Kuna prices that are now invalid. All prices in Croatia are in Euro. 1 EUR = ₹89.

  • Skipping Zadar for a second Dubrovnik day

Zadar (Sea Organ, sunset, old town, Roman Forum) is 2.5 hours from Split by bus and typically skipped by Indian travellers. Zadar Sea Organ sunset is most specifically original Croatian experience in circuit — architecture of sound applied to Adriatic wave action. It exists nowhere else on Earth and it is free.

  • Game of Thrones tourism without watching the show

Dubrovnik GoT locations (city walls as Wall, Minčeta Tower as Tower of the Hand, Fort Lovrijenac as Red Keep) are significantly more meaningful to fans than to non-fans. If not GoT fan: Dubrovnik walls visit is architecturally and historically extraordinary without GoT context. The walls at 7am give a more specifically Dubrovnik experience than any organised GoT tour.

  • Flying into and out of same Croatia city without open-jaw routing

Flying INTO Split and OUT of Dubrovnik (or vice versa) avoids backtracking and uses the catamaran island-hopping route naturally. Most Indian travellers book return flights to/from Dubrovnik and then waste a day backtracking to start point. Open-jaw routing (Split IN + Dubrovnik OUT) saves 1 full day and uses catamaran route productively.

  • Diocletian Palace surface only without underground

Diocletian's Palace surface-level visit (peristyle, cathedral, peristyle squares) is impressive. Diocletian's Palace underground chambers (Substructures, 8am entry €10) give the complete architectural plan of the imperial palace above — the moment of understanding that Diocletian's dining room was directly above the basement vault transforms the surface-level visit. Skipping the underground misses 50% of the palace experience.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Croatia.

Apply at VFS Global (Croatian Embassy processing). Fee: €80/adult (≈ ₹7,120) + VFS charges. Documents: passport, photos, hotel bookings (all nights), return tickets, 6-month bank statements, income proof, travel insurance (min €30,000). Processing: 15-30 working days. Apply 6-8 weeks ahead. The Schengen covers all 27 Schengen countries.
Budget: ₹1,10,000-₹1,60,000/person (flights included). Mid-range: ₹1,80,000-₹2,80,000. Flights to Split or Dubrovnik return: ₹50,000-₹1,10,000. Daily ground: Budget ₹6,000-₹11,000 · Mid ₹14,000-₹25,000. August: 50-80% more expensive than May.
May-June: finest weather, 50-60% fewer tourists than August, 40-50% cheaper hotels. September: warm sea (23-25°C), 40% fewer tourists, excellent value. August: maximum energy, warmest Adriatic, but 7am strategy for all major sites essential. June is optimal balance of weather, price, and crowd.
Yes — the most extraordinary inland natural site in Europe. 16 turquoise-emerald interconnected lakes and 90 waterfalls. Book online at np-plitvicka-jezera.hr minimum 2 weeks ahead for August (it sells out). The 7am first entry slot gives the lakes in dawn mist with 30 other visitors vs 800 at 11am. €33 (≈ ₹2,937). Full circuit takes 6-8 hours.
Split → Hvar (catamaran, 60-70 min, €8-12) → Korčula (catamaran, 60 min, €10-15) → Dubrovnik (catamaran, 2 hours, €15-20). Book each leg at jadrolinija.hr or krilo.hr 3-5 days ahead in August. 2 nights Hvar minimum, 1 night Korčula, 2+ nights Dubrovnik.
Return economy: ₹50,000-₹1,10,000. Air Serbia (via Belgrade, usually the most economical), Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul), Lufthansa (via Frankfurt). Split (SPU) is a good alternative entry — slightly cheaper and avoids the Dubrovnik airport taxi. Book 2-3 months ahead for August.
NO — swimming is strictly prohibited at Plitvice Lakes (UNESCO conservation rules protect travertine ecosystem). At Krka National Park (other major Croatian waterfall park): swimming IS permitted at Skradinski Buk. If swimming at a waterfall is the priority: book Krka (np-krka.hr), not Plitvice.
7 days: Split + Hvar + Dubrovnik + Plitvice or Krka (minimum for core Dalmatian experience). 10 days: Narender's complete August circuit with Zadar and Korčula. 14 days: total Croatia with Rovinj (Istria) and Zagreb. Minimum meaningful Croatia: 7 days.
