About Paris Switzerland

Paris (11 million metro, capital of France) and Switzerland (8.7 million, Alpine federal state) are 4 hours apart by high-speed train (TGV Paris → Zürich direct) — the most efficient Europe two-country combination for Indian families. Paris gives concentrated culture and history; Switzerland gives the most spectacular Alpine scenery in Europe. Single Schengen visa covers both countries.

Why visit

Why Visit Paris Switzerland

Why Paris + Switzerland for Indian Families? Because no other Europe combination gives both the cultural intensity that parents want (Paris — 2,000 years of history in the most beautiful city in the world) and the natural spectacle that children remember for life (Jungfraujoch — real snow at 3,454m, the Aletsch Glacier, the Alpine landscape that no photograph prepares you for). In March, you get Paris before the summer crowds and Switzerland with the snow fully established.

Standing on the Jungfraujoch summit terrace at 3,454m in March 2026 with my family — the temperature was -16°C, the Aletsch Glacier stretched 23km to the south, and my younger one (7 years old) was trying to catch snowflakes with mittened hands on a continent they had never visited before. This is the moment that the Paris + Switzerland combination exists to produce: the culture of Paris for the adults and the natural wonder of the Alps for everyone. The combination works because the train journey between them (4 hours, Paris to Zürich on the TGV, the French countryside giving way to the Swiss farms and then the mountains appearing on the horizon) is the transition between two completely different European experiences that are still within a single holiday.

Specialist Family Notes
Aarushi's March 2026 Personal Family Notes

Paris — Eiffel Tower at Sunset: Pre-booked the 7pm summit ticket (March sunset in Paris: 6:50pm). The tower at the golden hour on the 2nd floor before the summit — the Seine below, the Sacré-Cœur visible on the Montmartre hill to the north, the Champs-Élysées axis stretching west. My children: "Is the whole city like this?" Yes. March advantage: the queue at 7pm was 15 minutes (vs 90 minutes in July). The city lights beginning as we descended from the summit — the Eiffel Tower's own light programme starting at 9pm (sparkling gold for 5 minutes every hour on the hour).

Versailles: The golf cart through the gardens saved the day — 2,000 acres is not walkable with younger children. The golf cart (€37/hour for a 4-seater) covers the major garden features (the Grand Canal, the Grand Trianon, the fountain displays) without the 6km walk. The Hall of Mirrors at 9am (first entry): the 357 mirrors and the morning light with perhaps 30 other visitors. By 11am: 500 people in the same room.

Jungfraujoch: The railway from Grindelwald at 7:25am (first departure). The temperature at Kleine Scheidegg (2,061m, the junction station) was -5°C. At the Jungfraujoch summit: -16°C with a wind chill that made -25°C. The thermal layers (base layer + mid layer + ski jacket for each family member) were the correct decision. My younger one: the snow play area on the terrace, the sledging run, and the Ice Palace (carved ice sculptures inside the glacier) kept everyone engaged for 3 hours at altitude.

Grindelwald First: The Grindelwald First cable car (10 minutes from Grindelwald village) at 9am with the First Cliff Walk — a 45m suspension walkway bolted to the cliff face at 2,167m with the valley 1,500m below through the transparent floor. My older one (11): entirely enthusiastic. My younger one (7): held hands at the middle section, declared it "the scariest and best thing." The First Flyer zip line (800m, 84 km/h over the valley): older child + me. The younger one waited at the bottom.

Where to go

Top Paris + Switzerland Family Experiences

Eiffel Tower

Pre-Book, Pre-Sunset, Pre-Crowd

The Eiffel Tower works on a pre-booking system — walk-up tickets at the base have 90-minute queues in summer and 15-minute queues in March. The family strategy is simple: book the 2nd-floor elevator ticket (not stairs) + summit ticket at gustavediffel.fr minimum 2 weeks ahead, select the 6:30–7pm time slot (Paris sunset in March: 6:50pm), arrive at the Tower's southern entrance at 6:15pm. The view from the 2nd floor (115m) gives the complete Paris panorama: the Seine directly below, the Champ de Mars behind, and in every other direction the specific Paris roofline — zinc and slate, the Haussmann uniformity, the occasional dome or spire punctuating the geometry. The summit (276m, the glass-enclosed top) is smaller and colder but higher — the Montmartre hill with the white Sacré-Cœur visible to the north, the La Défense business district to the west, the Bois de Boulogne. For children: the Eiffel Tower is simultaneously the most recognisable building they have seen in photographs and the most surprising in person. The 9pm Eiffel Tower light show (gold sparkling, 5 minutes every hour after dark) is best seen from the Champ de Mars or Trocadéro fountain plaza below.

Palace of Versailles

Golf Cart Strategy

The Palace of Versailles (40 minutes from Paris by RER C train, €1.73 ≈ ₹154 per person, 35-minute journey) is the most ambitious family day trip from Paris — and requires a specific strategy for it to work. The strategy: pre-book the Palace entry (€21/adult, children under 17 free), arrive at 9am opening for the Hall of Mirrors before the tour groups arrive (by 11am the Hall has 500 people), then rent the golf cart (€37/hour, 4-seater) for the gardens rather than walking the 2,000-acre estate. The Hall of Mirrors at 9am in March: 357 mirrors along the 73m gallery, the morning light from the 17 windows catching the gilded arches, and 30 other visitors. The specific gold-and-glass quality of the Hall — designed to reflect both the garden light and the candlelight of 20,000 candles that once lit the room for royal entertainments — is the most comprehensively "French royal" visual available anywhere. Children's engagement with the Hall: surprisingly high — the mirrors (fun), the ceiling paintings (incredible scale), and the knowledge that Louis XIV actually lived here (the school history becoming a place). The Versailles Musical Fountains (Saturday-Sunday, April-October) NOT operational in March — garden beautiful but static.

Louvre Museum

Family Strategy

The Louvre (the world's most visited museum, 9.6 million visitors annually) works for families with a specific approach: 2.5 hours maximum (beyond this, museum fatigue sets in for children), the child-specific audio guide (€5/device, guided by a fictional character named "Malak" through the museum's highlights), and the Egyptian antiquities wing first (the mummies, the sarcophagi, the hieroglyphics, the canopic jars — the most immediately engaging section for children 6–14). After Egypt: the Winged Victory of Samothrace (the headless Nike, 2nd century BC, at the top of the Daru staircase — visible from the bottom of the stairs, the most dramatically placed sculpture in any museum), the Venus de Milo (the armless Aphrodite, 130–100 BC, in Room 16 of the Greek Antiquities wing), and the Mona Lisa last (Room 711, 3rd floor — the painting is smaller than expected, glass-enclosed, seen from 3m behind a barrier, surrounded by 200 other visitors). Children under 18: free entry. Pre-book at louvre.fr to avoid the pyramid entrance queue.
Open Louvre Museum Guide

Montmartre + Sacré-Cœur

The Hill Above Paris

The Montmartre hill (130m above the Seine) is the specific Paris that children find most narratively engaging — the artists' quarter where Picasso, Modigliani, and Toulouse-Lautrec worked, the vineyard that still produces wine every October, the Place du Tertre (the artists' square, portrait painters working at every table), and the Sacré-Cœur Basilica (the white Romano-Byzantine dome visible from most of Paris, 1914, free entry) at the summit. Family approach: take the Montmartre funicular (€1.73 per person, using a Metro ticket) from the bottom of the hill rather than climbing the 222 steps. The funicular is 2 minutes, fully accessible, and emerges directly at the Sacré-Cœur terrace. The view from the Sacré-Cœur terrace is the freest 360° Paris panorama available — no ticket, no queue, Paris from the north. The Place du Tertre artist portrait commission (€30-60 for a 15-20 min sketch) is one of the specific Paris family souvenirs that actually works.

Seine River Dinner Cruise

Paris at Night, From the Water

The Bateaux Parisiens dinner cruise (Port de la Bourdonnais, Trocadéro, 7pm departure, 2 hours) gives the complete Paris riverside after dark — the Eiffel Tower illuminated and sparkling, Notre-Dame (reopened after the 2019 fire in 2024, visible from the river in the restored state), the Louvre pyramid lit from within, and 37 historic bridges crossing above the boat as it moves from the Eiffel Tower east to the Île de la Cité and back. The March dinner cruise: the restaurant seating is uncrowded (summer cruises are booked 3 weeks ahead; March is bookable 3–5 days ahead). Children's menu available (€25 ≈ ₹2,225 vs adult €75–€100). The 9pm Eiffel Tower sparkle (seen from the Seine, 200m from the Tower, looking up as the gold lights fill the sky) is the specific dinner cruise moment. For children: counting the 37 bridges (each different, oldest from the 12th century) is the specific dinner activity.

Jungfraujoch

Top of Europe, Bottom of the Family Memory

The Jungfraujoch (3,454m, the highest railway station in Europe, accessible by a combination of cogwheel trains from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen) takes 2.5 hours each way from Interlaken by train — but the journey is the experience. The Wengernalp Railway above Kleine Scheidegg passes through the Eiger Mountain in a tunnel (9.5km carved through the rock of the Eiger and Mönch) before emerging at the Jungfraujoch station inside the mountain. At the summit: the Sphinx Observatory terrace (3,571m — the Aletsch Glacier stretching 23km south, the Swiss Plateau visible 2,000m below, and the specific silence of a glacier at altitude), the Snow Fun Park (sledging, snow disc, snow tube), and the Ice Palace (800m of corridors carved inside the glacier, the ice sculptures lit from below, the floor slippery enough for children to slide on in socks). The temperature on the Jungfraujoch summit in March: -15 to -20°C — base layer + mid layer + ski jacket + ski gloves + balaclava for each family member is the critical preparation.

Grindelwald First + Cliff Walk

Nature loversMid-range stays
The Grindelwald First cable car (10 minutes from Grindelwald village, 9am–5pm, CHF 32/adult ≈ ₹3,072, children under 15: half price) ascends to 2,167m above the valley. At the First station: the First Cliff Walk (a 45-metre steel walkway bolted to the cliff face with a glass-floor section — free, included in the cable car ticket), the First Flyer zip line (800m, 84 km/h, CHF 29 ≈ ₹2,784, minimum age 10), the First Glider (a 4-person hang glider device, CHF 39 ≈ ₹3,744, children 8+), and the mountain restaurant (the Bergrestaurant First — rösti, hot chocolate, and the valley view from the terrace). March: the First area is snow-covered — the Cliff Walk path has been cleared but the surrounding terrain is white. The specific March First experience: the Eiger north face directly opposite at eye level, the snow on the valley floor below, and the Grindelwald village visible as a miniature settlement 1,100m down. First Flyer minimum age 10, minimum weight 40kg.

Lucerne

The Swiss City Children Remember

Culture seekersMid-range stays
Lucerne (1 hour from Interlaken by train, or 45 minutes from Zürich) is the most architecturally complete Swiss city for families — the 14th-century wooden Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) with its 112 triangular paintings in the roof trusses crossing the Reuss River, the Lion Monument (the dying lion carved from a 9m-high sandstone cliff, the most emotionally affecting outdoor sculpture in Switzerland), and the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus — the most visited museum in Switzerland, with real aircraft, locomotives, historic cars, boats, astronaut suits, a planetarium, and a fully interactive children's section covering aviation, rail, and space travel — CHF 32/adult ≈ ₹3,072, CHF 16/child). The Lucerne lake boat (Lake Lucerne paddle steamer service, Swiss Travel Pass valid) gives the alpine lake landscape at water level. Mark Twain called the Lion Monument "the most mournful and moving piece of rock in the world."

Interlaken

Family Activity Base

All typesMid-range stays
Interlaken sits between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland valley — the base for all Jungfraujoch and Grindelwald journeys, with its own family activities: the Harder Kulm funicular (10 minutes from Interlaken East station, 1,322m above the valley, the 360° view of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau plus both lakes below — CHF 32 return ≈ ₹3,072), the boat from Interlaken West on Lake Thun (Swiss Travel Pass valid, the lake in March still and glacier-fed, the Stockhorn mountain visible at the western end), and the Interlaken town itself (the Höheweg — the main promenade, the Swiss chocolate and Rolex watch shops, the outdoor equipment rental for snowshoes and ski equipment in March). The Two Lakes Bridge at Harder Kulm is the photographic centerpiece. Indian restaurants available on Hauptstrasse.

Zürich

Family Day in Switzerland's Largest City

Business + cityMid-range stays
Zürich (the financial and cultural capital, 1 hour from Interlaken by train) gives the family the complete Swiss city experience: the old town (Altstadt) on both banks of the Limmat River, the two 12th-century Romanesque towers of the Grossmünster cathedral (climb to the top — open to visitors, CHF 5 ≈ ₹480, the view of the lake and the Alps), the Kunsthaus Zürich (art museum, free for children under 16), the Zurich Zoo (CHF 30/adult ≈ ₹2,880, CHF 15/child, with koalas, elephants — the most family-complete Swiss attraction beyond mountain railways), and the Bahnhofstrasse (the luxury shopping street — window display browsing costs nothing, and the Sprüngli confectionery at the Paradeplatz end for the famous Luxemburgerli macarons). Zurich airport (ZRH) is the main Swiss arrival hub — 15 minutes by train to the city centre.

11 Family Travel Tips

Practical local advice — money habits, safety rules and the small planning choices that materially change how the trip goes.

  • Money

    3 tips
    • Schengen visa (single) covers BOTH France + Switzerland · Apply 6-8 weeks ahead at VFS Global.

    • Pre-book Paris attractions — Eiffel Tower (gustavediffel.fr), Louvre (louvre.fr), Versailles (chateauversailles.fr) — all pre-book or face long queues.

    • Jungfraujoch railway ticket 50% discounted with Swiss Travel Pass · The pass pays for itself on Jungfraujoch alone for a family of 4.

  • Safety

    3 tips
    • Paris pickpocketing — major tourist sites (Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Champs-Élysées Metro) have the highest pickpocket concentration in Europe · Use a crossbody bag · Keep phones in front pockets · Never leave bags on chairs at restaurants · Child supervision at Grindelwald First Cliff Walk + Harder Kulm Two Lakes Bridge — sections with low fencing over significant drops.

    • Switzerland altitude awareness — Jungfraujoch (3,454m) altitude sickness symptoms (headache, nausea) possible · Ascend slowly (train does this automatically) · Drink water · Avoid alcohol · Children less susceptible · Travel insurance with medical evacuation ESSENTIAL — helicopter evacuation Jungfraujoch costs €5,000-€20,000 without coverage.

    • Emergency numbers — France: 15 medical · 17 police · 18 fire · 112 universal. Switzerland: 144 ambulance · 117 police · 118 fire · 112 universal. Save both country numbers in your phone before travel.

  • Etiquette

    2 tips
    • French "Bonjour" mandatory — say "Bonjour" when entering any French shop, restaurant, or hotel · French culture considers greeting mandatory · Entering without "Bonjour" considered rude · Swiss punctuality — Swiss trains leave at the exact minute · Arrive at the platform 5 min early · 30 seconds late = missed train.

    • Paris museum photography — Louvre permits without flash most galleries · Sainte-Chapelle prohibits during services · Versailles permits throughout · Swiss Sunday — many shops closed Sunday · Plan grocery Saturday · Restaurants + museums + mountain railways operate normally · Children in Swiss mountain restaurants — Kindermenu CHF 12-18 (rösti, pasta, soup) at the counter.

  • Pitfalls

    2 tips
    • Grindelwald First Flyer age/weight restriction — minimum age 10 + minimum weight 40kg · First Glider minimum 8 years · Plan accordingly · Paris Metro vs Taxi families — Metro fast but many stairs + narrow turnstiles with luggage · Taxis/Uber for airport + luggage days · Holy Week 2026 — if your March holiday includes Easter weekend, both countries at school holiday capacity · Pre-book everything 6-8 weeks ahead.

    • Versailles Musical Fountains NOT in March — operate weekends April-October ONLY · Common family disappointment · Garden still extraordinary but static · Jungfraujoch weather closure — check jungfrau.ch/en/webcams morning of visit · Summit above cloud level in bad weather = zero visibility · Postpone by one day if heavy cloud.

Honest review

What’s Genuinely Worth It in Paris & Switzerland — and What’s Overrated

An unfiltered assessment of what delivers on its reputation, and what to skip or swap for better value.

  • Jungfraujoch (CHF 230/adult ≈ ₹22,080 return train · children half price)

Snow at 3,454m. Ice Palace. Snow Fun Park. Aletsch Glacier. Trip's peak family moment.

  • Versailles golf cart (€37/hour 4-seater ≈ ₹3,293/hour)

2,000 acres of royal gardens without walking. Only way to see Versailles with young children.

  • Eiffel Tower pre-booked sunset (€26-34/adult ≈ ₹2,314-₹3,026)

15-min queue vs 90-min. March sunset 6:50pm with city below.

  • Grindelwald First Cliff Walk (free with CHF 32 cable car)

Transparent floor over 1,500m of Alpine valley. Children's first Alpine exposure.

  • Swiss Museum of Transport, Lucerne (CHF 32/adult ≈ ₹3,072)

Most family-complete Swiss attraction. Aircraft simulators. Train driver controls. Planetarium.

  • Cailler Chocolate Factory unlimited tasting (CHF 14/adult ≈ ₹1,344)

Swiss chocolate at source. Unlimited. Children remember for years.

  • Seine dinner cruise (€75-100/adult · children €25 ≈ ₹2,225)

Paris at night from water. Eiffel sparkle from Seine. 37 bridges above.

  • Louvre child audio guide (€5/device ≈ ₹445)

Only way to make Louvre engaging for children 6-14. "Malak" character guide.

  • Paris Museum Pass (€52/2 days · children under 18 free)

    Covers Louvre + Musée d'Orsay + Versailles + Sainte-Chapelle + 50 museums priority entry. Pays for itself Day 2.

  • Bern Old Town UNESCO half day (Free)

Most undervisited Swiss capital. Covered arcades, Zytglogge clock tower, Bear Park, Rose Garden view of Alps. 50 min from Interlaken.

  • Jungfraujoch without thermal layers

-15 to -20°C summit. Base + mid + ski jacket + gloves + balaclava per family member. Outdoor terrace IS the experience.

  • Eiffel Tower walk-in tickets

March: 15-min with pre-booking. August walk-in: 90-120 min in heat with children.

    Better movePre-book gustavediffel.fr non-negotiable.

  • Versailles without golf cart

2,000 acres. Young children cannot walk full garden. Golf cart €37/hour covers Grand Canal + Grand Trianon + fountains in 1 hour. Without it: see 20%.

  • Confusing EUR and CHF

Switzerland uses Swiss Francs, NOT Euros. Border areas accept Euros at unfavourable rates.

Better moveGet CHF at Swiss ATM on arrival. 1 CHF ≈ ₹96 — most expensive European currency.

  • Jungfraujoch without altitude awareness

3,454m causes altitude sickness — headache, nausea. Drink water, avoid alcohol, move slowly. Serious symptoms: descent cures within 30 min.

  • Paris without neighbourhood exploration

Monuments essential but Marais, Île Saint-Louis (Berthillon ice cream since 1954), Canal Saint-Martin make Paris specifically Paris rather than a monument collection.

  • Switzerland without Swiss Travel Pass

Point-to-point tickets CHF 45-80/journey. Pass (CHF 244/4 days, children half price, under 6 free) covers all trains/buses/boats + 50% mountain railways. Family of 4 pays for itself in 2 journeys.

  • March Switzerland without March-specific activities

March is winter. Summer activities (rafting, hiking, paragliding) not operational. Winter activities (Jungfraujoch snow, First Cliff Walk, ice skating, sledging) at peak.

  • Expecting Versailles Musical Fountains in March

Fountains operate Saturdays/Sundays April-October ONLY. Not running winter. Garden beautiful but static. Common family disappointment.

  • Going to Jungfraujoch without checking webcam first

Summit above cloud level in bad weather. Train runs but visibility zero.

Better moveCheck jungfrau.ch/en/webcams morning of. Postpone if heavy cloud.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

Visas, realistic budgets, seasonal weather and the logistics travellers ask us about most before they book Paris & Switzerland.

A single Schengen visa covers both France and Switzerland. Each passport holder (including children) needs a separate application. Apply at VFS Global (whichever embassy — French or Swiss — processes based on which country has more nights). Fee: adults €80 (≈ ₹7,120) + VFS service charge, children 6–11: €40 (≈ ₹3,560), under 6: free. Apply 6–8 weeks before travel with hotel bookings, return tickets, and bank statements.
Mid-range estimate: ₹9,00,000–₹14,00,000 for a family of 4 (flights included). Flights alone: ₹2,20,000–₹4,00,000 for 4 people return. Switzerland is the most expensive country in Europe — budget CHF 500/day (≈ ₹48,000/day) for a family of 4 on the ground in Switzerland.
Excellent — March is the snow season in the Alps. The Jungfraujoch Snow Fun Park (sledging, snow disc at 3,454m), Grindelwald First Cliff Walk and ice skating, the Cailler chocolate factory unlimited tasting, and the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne are all specifically excellent for children. March snow + April-onwards hiking is the most complete family Switzerland.
TGV Lyria train (Paris Gare de Lyon → Zürich HB direct, 4 hours, from €29/person ≈ ₹2,581). Or Paris → Basel (3 hours 10 minutes) then local train to Bern, Interlaken, or Zürich (1 hour). Book at raileurope.com or sncf-connect.com minimum 3 weeks ahead for March.
Yes — emphatically. A family of 4 (2 adults + 2 children 6–15) spending 8 days in Switzerland: the pass costs approximately CHF 724 (≈ ₹69,504) for adults and CHF 362 (≈ ₹34,752) for children. Single-journey train tickets in Switzerland cost CHF 45–80 per journey — the pass pays for itself in 2–3 train journeys per person.
Any age — the railway is fully accessible, the Ice Palace is walkable, and the Snow Fun Park operates for children from age 3. The outdoor summit terrace (-15 to -20°C) is accessible for children of any age with proper thermal clothing. The only specific age restrictions: First Flyer (10+), First Glider (8+). The Jungfraujoch experience itself has no minimum age.
Paris in March: 8–14°C — cool but comfortable with a winter jacket. Not too cold. Switzerland valleys (Interlaken, Grindelwald): 2–8°C — cold, warm jacket needed. Jungfraujoch summit: -15 to -20°C — thermal layers mandatory. The indoor attractions (museums, ice palace, restaurants) are all heated. The cold is manageable with preparation and is precisely what makes the snow activities authentic.
10 days: Paris (5 days) + Switzerland (5 days) — tight but covers the essentials. 14 days: the correct family window (our circuit) — 6 days Paris + 8 days Switzerland. 18 days: the extended version with Bern, Geneva, and no rushing. Minimum for meaningful family holiday: 10 days.
